12 Coldplay Months Of 2008: JUNE (Seven Free Shows)

The Q magazine interview recently released mentioned the name of a great Italian musician and an excellent violinist - David Rossi. Coldplayzone.it interviewed Davide Rossi and he told us all about his work on Leftrightleftrightleft and Rainy Day, two tracks which didn't make the album.

Rossi is currently a member of Goldfrapp and has known Coldplay since their support during the Twisted Logic Tour. Davide Rossi worked on Coldplay's Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends and his work is featured in seven songs of the new album. Violet Hill, first single released by the band on iTunes, features a soundscapes intro-like, which originally was an improvisation that Rossi and keyboard player Jon Hopkins did together during an early session with the band at their studio in London.

Others songs where Rossi's electric violin can be heard are: Life In Technicolor, Lovers In Japan, Cemeteries Of London, 42, Yes and Strawberry Swing (the chunky bass groove, didgeridoo's like that comes a little while after the beginning of the song, is one of the many examples of the sound of his Violectra).

Coldplay covered the Pussycat Dolls at the MTV Awards Rehearsal on June 1st. Here's what we reported back then:

Despite the fact that they’re one of the biggest rock acts on the planet — so much so that they made selling 10 million copies of their last album seem unassuming — Coldplay keep a surprisingly low profile. Fast-forward about an hour — rehearsals take a long time, after all — and Coldpay are standing onstage, dressed like French Revolutionaries, keyboards and timpani drums scattered around them. Various members of the production crew are prattling about, and since there’s nothing better to do, Martin walks over to one of ‘boards, and begins plinking out the opening notes of PCD’s hit “Don’t Cha,” singing the opening lines in a loving tribute … “Don’t Cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me,” he warbled, as stagehands and producers in headsets giggled and applauded.

Coldplay Rock MTV Awards With 'Viva La Vida' Performance

Coldplay couldn't prevent a plague like the massive fire at Universal Studios -- the site of the awards -- and the world appeared unchanged when lead singer Chris Martin sat at the end of the stage to herald the end of the 'Viva La Vida' Performance at the MTV Awards.

But all told, Coldplay handled itself quite well Sunday night, giving a relatively stripped down performance of a rather ornate song. Martin began at the keyboard, but soon drifted from his bandmates -- mainly the booming, irresistible tom-tom drumming of Will Champion. With his hands in the air, Martin swayed to the song's swift-moving strings, turning the song into the arena-charmer it is destined to be.

And give Coldplay for credit for keeping things relatively simple. The orchestral accompaniments were seen only on a backing screen and appeared looped. The band resisted the traditional overblown award show trappings, and instead showed the power of an understated guitar riff and a well-timed church bell.

'Too Sexy' Kylie Axed By Coldplay

Chris Martin said Coldplay's duet with Kylie Minogue was axed from their new album because the Australian songbird made them 'too sexy' – something his band aren't ready to be.

Comeback Chris also says the pop princess took control of writing the collaboration, while the band were challenged with the task of designing the singer's outfits. Asked why the band didn't include her duet on new album 'Viva La Vida', Martin tells the new Q Radio station, 'Well it's just too sexy, at this point we cannot be that sexy…'

Coldplay Enjoy Biggest Ever US Single Hit

Coldplay scored their biggest ever hit on the US singles chart. 'Viva La Vida', the title track from the band's upcoming fourth album, climbed from ten to three on the Billboard Hot 100, eclipsing the number eight peak of their 2005 single 'Speed Of Sound'.

Media Reviews Of Coldplay's New Album

Both the Guardian and Independent (UK newspapers) have given the new album 3/5. The outspoken Guardian reviewer, Alexis Petridis summed up his thoughts by saying "There are moments during Viva la Vida where you feel impelled to take Coldplay aside and explain to them that there's more to reinventing your sound than calling Brian Eno, coming up with some enigmatic song titles and telling people you've reinvented your sound: you are actually supposed to change your music as well."

The Times review was as neutral as you can get (and includes a previously unseen picture). They said "According to Eno, what it all amounts to is the sound of a band “living at the edge of their possibilities”. Such precisely worded praise could just as easily apply to the logic-defying leaps of inspiration found on a Radiohead album as it does a band of rather talented musicians desperately trying to stay interesting.

The Time Magazine review reported, "Where Martin shines--and when Viva la Vida peaks--is when the subject turns to desire. He's got a soul singer's ability to communicate the totality of love with a few oohs and aahs, and he saves Lovers in Japan from his own clichés ("Lovers keep on the road you're on/ Runners until the race is run") just by opening up his throat and letting loose.

Coldplay Set International iTunes Record

Coldplay took an unusual iTunes record, with new album Viva La Vida set to become the best-selling album pre-sale ever released in the history of Apple's music store, Apple insiders informed us. Not just that, but Coldplay's new collection was also set to beat the best ever first week iTunes album sales record on a global basis, a record then held by Jack Johnson's Sleep Through The Static.

New Coldplay Album Leak Spurs Webstream On MySpace

It was still over a week and a half until Coldplay's fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, was scheduled for release, but the album leaked online through a torrent on 4th June.

Coldplay and EMI took the next logical, and predictable, step to combat the online leak. NME reported that the album would be available for streaming from the band's MySpace page.

The Truth Behind That Coldplay Album Title

In an exclusive interview on John Kennedy's X-posure show, Coldplay's Chris Martin revealed why their new album, 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends' has two titles.

In a move that faintly echoes Radiohead's strategy to allow fans to decide what to pay for their album, Coldplay have given their fans the choice of two titles to choose from. Explained Chris Martin: "We refer to it just as 'Viva La Vida' but the other bit is if you find it too depressing you can call it 'Death and All His Friends' and if you find it not depressing you can call it 'Viva La Vida'. It's very much a 'you-decide-what-the-title-is'. We very much wanted to make it like those model airplanes that you buy and you can choose what colour you paint it."

The Coldplay frontman also revealed that working with legendary producer Brian Eno had resulted in the band ditching more obvious material for songs that artistically stretched the band. "We were very privileged to have Brian Eno and another guy called Markus Dravs and another guy called Rick Simpson and we had a lot of help," said Martin. "They got involved very early at the demoing stage and they would often tell us, 'You need some better songs'. Our aim was to do stuff that we hadn't done before so that means that things that would have previously gone to the top of the pile have to wait a bit because they sound too much like Coldplay songs."

Coldplay Report On Revised US Tour Dates

Coldplay.com officially announced changes to North American tour dates. The report is as follows:

We're very sorry, but unfortunately Coldplay have had to move the dates of some of the previously-announced US shows. The band have experienced some production delays which mean that the show simply won't be ready for June 29. It's very frustrating but they promise you a show worthy of your patience and understanding when they start in mid-July. All tickets remain valid, but refunds will be available from the point of purchase if you're unable to make it to the new date.

Coldplay Receive Another Bashing From Andy Gill (The Independent)

On the eve of Coldplay's UK album release, Andy Gill the outspoken Independent 'journalist' who arguably hasn't got enough work to do, launched a scathing attack on the band, calling them "Pompous, mawkish, and unbearably smug".

Brian Eno also features heavily in the scrabblescore-rich article, Gill saying, "One can only wonder how many musclebound oafs were required to carry the cheque that persuaded Eno to produce Coldplay's new album. I mean, given his rarefied cultural tastes, surely it can't have been the project highest on Eno's wish-list? And what with all the U2 royalties, he couldn't conceivably need the money."

However, the Independent Blogs hit back at the article by Andy Gill: Why I Hate Coldplay. Here is the full response from within their own camp:

I like Coldplay. I do. I know, I know - very unfashionable, but there it is. I like their music. Always have. In fact, I like them so much that I'm convinced at least half the people who claim not to are lying in order to be cool. And I don't mind Chris Martin either. I mean, I've never met the man, but he's never done anything in public that could explain the rage he seems to inspire in my friends, my colleagues and, it seems, a good portion of the media.

So it was with a kind of resigned weariness that I learned The Independent's esteemed rock critic (!) Andy Gill would be joining the ranks of Coldplay-haters in this morning's paper. This will be another 2,000 words of undeserved bile tossed in the faces of poor Chris and his pals, I thought. And I was right. The commenters have been raging all morning, both for and against the band. I'll gladly be a witness for the defence.

First, Coldplay's music. In the interests of full disclosure, I should mention that I own pretty much all of it - and I paid for it with my hard-earned pennies, not by nicking it from the internet or being sent it by eager PRs with the misguided impression that journalists hold any sway over the Coldplay-loving public.

Chris Martin gave the Radio 4 interview a cold shoulder after continual negative questioning by DJ John Wilson about watermelons, 'morbid' music, and accused Chris Martin of telling a sexist joke about Frida Khalo.

Will Champion continued questions on his own until Chris returned to answer the final question abruptly, at which point the interview ends. Coldplay were also due to appear on Radio 2 show the same afternoon but the airing of the interview was pulled at short notice.

Coldplay played an exclusive rehearsal concert at Wembley for 900 family and friends, and Chris Martin compared the live comeback to a pre-season friendly.

The singer told the crowd of friends and family at London’s Wembley Arena that getting back on stage was like a trip to the football with his dad when he was a nipper. He said: “Excuse us for this embarrassing shambles of a rehearsal. This reminds me of when my dad, who is 107, took me to Torquay for a pre-season game against Liverpool — and they were absolutely shit. We see this as a pre-season and we’ll be on it when the season starts. Luckily none of you have spent a blind penny.”

Hello there, I am Roadie #42. My good friend Prospekt has asked me to keep you all posted on the goings on from inside the tour. I sit somewhere stage left through every performance. Wherever the band are in the world, I'll be there and I'll be reporting back to you.

So here we are in Brixton Academy. The crowd's gone home, the floor's a mess and the truck's nearly packed. It must be the first night of the Viva La Vida tour. In many ways, it feels as though we've run a marathon just to get to the starting line. Rehearsals have been brutally taxing. We've been flitting about across the planet doing TV shows, amidst trying to work out exactly what we need to do to be ready for the guys to play the songs. (Tympani drums? Cast iron bells? Butterfly confetti? Hand painted synths and guitars? None of this stuff comes off the shelf...)

Folks have been working around the clock in Wembley Arena to put together a live experience that does the record justice. The show is crafted and sculpted from months of mere imaginings in round table meetings. From the CAD drawings of Lighting Designer Paul Normandale and the "What we really want to do is....." emails from the band, to the "How the hell are we going to...?" 4am headaches of Production Manager Craig Finley. Time comes to crush us, as ready or not, it's time to take the show on the road. After the scale of the Wembley production rehearsals, we rolled into Brixton with a very stripped back and bare show. In many ways, it's a testament to the songs and the performance that the show was as good as it was. Proof (if it were needed) that the huge arena spectacle is about enhancement rather than distraction.

You all know how the show went - it was on the radio. As for us, let's just say that there's one very happy band walking out of the venue tonight and a large number of very relieved roadies.

Coldplay burnt up the charts this week, achieving their first ever UK No.1 single while holding the top slot in the albums chart.

The band have stormed to the top with Viva La Vida - released as a download single only, according to The Official Charts Company. And the band have two top-20 hits in the singles chart with Violet Hill sitting at number 11 along with the album at no.1 for a second week.

Here was the New York Daily's review of the show:

I thought that showing up at Rockefeller Plaza at 2 a.m. for Coldplay’s 7 a.m. "Today Show" concert would be early enough to get into the "first-come, first-served" show.

I was wrong.

The line already extended down an entire block. Kids near the front were camped out in sleeping bags, while those a bit further down the line, like me, simply sat on the sidewalk while cockroaches climbed out of the sewers and sent us jumping. Those in the very front told "Today" host Meredith Vieira that they had been there for about 17 hours, which means they were waiting since Thursday afternoon. Now that's dedication. However, once the barriers were lowered to let fans into the show, the intensity of the fans grew a bit testy. As a few middle-aged women skipped the line here and there, fans jeered. Some pleaded with others to do something about it, but no one ever risked getting out of line. After spending more than a night sleeping on pavement, nobody wanted to risk getting thrown out of the show by security. From my spot at the back corner of the stage, I was dumbfounded by the number of people who flooded the streets. The entire plaza was full, stretching from 5th to 6th Aves., not to mention the many NBC employees who gazed out their windows of 30 Rock, watching the stage with just as much eagerness as the many college kids below.

Finally, lead singer Chris Martin and the other members of Coldplay emerged from the 'Today' studio, and Martin could not have been more engaged with his audience. He joked wildly and swore, laughing at how awful the sound-check went. He even caught a purple bra that was thrown at him by an adoring fan. Vieira seemed greatly amused by the act, but it hardly fazed Martin, who tossed it aside as just a bit of silliness. Once other underwear hit the air, he did finally take his attention away from performing, if only for a brief moment. My personal favorite moment of the concert was when Martin decided he wanted to walk into the crowd that stretched from the back of the stage to beyond 49th street. Standing at the back corner of the stage myself, I could see his disappointment when the technical directors told him how they'd prefer he go through the front crowd.

Martin agreed with the countless fans stuck in back. The V.I.P. section at the very foot of the stage had apparently gotten enough Coldplay for his tastes. He jumped onto a back platform and danced among his other fans. The Coldplay fans - like me - who didn't have the greatest of views at the show appreciated this fan-friendly gesture.

This is an easy one: secret gigs all over the place! :D

The secret gig in Amsterdam was so great, meeting the guys afterwards..Still have to take a look at the pictures and setlist sometimes to convince myself it really happened. :)

the 4 june totally made my year and even more than this.. so the vote goes to the leak :happy:

for me the day began as a normal day but somehow i didnt want to go to school though i was in good health (and i didnt skip school often). i stayed at home and went totally crazy over this cause i didnt even know the word leak before! i thought that could not be a coincidence that i was at home on my own.

i cried and smiled at the same time!

i cannot describe that with words but i will not forget these moments.

i feel a bit bad, since the leak was epic and all, but it's without a doubt the today show that gets my vote. it was so incredible being there, and i can never thank ian and jen enough :nice:
