Andy Murray reaches Cincinnati Masters semi-finals

World No2 keeps hopes alive of back-to-back victories by coming from a set down to beat Julien Benneteau of France 4-6, 6-3, 6-1

It took Andy Murray 67 minutes and one epic rally to come to life at the Cincinnati Masters yesterday and he just about timed things right. The world No 2 and defending champion trailed Julien Benneteau, of France, by a set and 2-0 but battled back superbly to reach the semi-finals with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory, keeping alive his hopes of winning back-to-back Masters Series titles.

Murray had looked sluggish early on and Benneteau played flawlessly as he took the first set and then snatched an early break in the second. But the match turned in the third game when Murray won a marathon rally of 53 strokes, in which he looked out of the point three times before finally forcing Benneteau to put a smash wide to earn the break back. It was the rally of the week and the raised fist from Murray and the standing ovation he received signalled a sea change as the Scot gradually gained the ascendancy.

A rare backhand error from the Frenchman put Murray a break up at 3-2 and from there it was hard to see anything other than a Murray win.

Once he had finally gained a foothold in the match, Murray began to run the finish out of Benneteau, pulling him side to side at every opportunity. Benneteau, who got into the tournament only as a lucky loser after the withdrawal of Juan Martín del Potro, had played for more than three hours in his previous match and the look on his face at the end of the second set betrayed a mixture of resignation and exhaustion. He found the energy to save four break points in his opening service game of the deciding set but it was only a matter of time and Murray broke twice to take his place in the last four.

Next up for Murray is likely to be Roger Federer, provided that the world No 1 overcame Lleyton Hewitt in his quarter-final last night. With the US Open beginning a week on Monday, the chance of striking psychological blow is unlikely to be lost on the Scot.

“Because I’ve beaten him a lot in the past [he leads their meetings 6-2] I know that if I play him in New York I can definitely win if I play well, so regardless of what happens this week, it’s not really going to change my mindset going into the US Open,” Murray said.

I was watching the first set last night and when Murray lost it I switched off the TV  But good to know he came back from behind to win the game.

Unfortunately he lost todays match...

Andy Murray suffered his eighth loss of the year as he succumbed to a 6-2 7-6 defeat to Roger Federer, and with it, threw up his Cincinnati champion mantle up for grabs for tomorrows final.

Murray was surprisingly flat, particularly in set number one as he struggled to read Federer's supremely varied serve, whilst struggling to generate any sort of discernible rhythmm on his own. It was an uncharacteristic big game performance from Murray, as it was well documented pre-match that his head to head over Federer is impressive, it now stands at 6-3 after todays events.

The British number one surrendered serve tamely in game three, as Federer looked red hot from the onset, demonstrating his deadly signature forehand that was so prevalent in the US Open final of last year. The Swiss was playing with swagger and panache, attacking the abundance of short balls that Murray threw up and approaching the net behind some intelligent approach shots. Murray's favoured crosscourt passing shot on the forehand was all too predictable, and he seemed unable to put up any sort of resistance when the world number one charged forward.

6-2 was arguably a flattering scoreline for Murray, as he staved off several break points in one game, just to hang onto Federer. However, the Scot was being outclassed and dropped serve once more to finish a miserly opening set.

I missed the semi, but I'm not surprised Murray was a bit "flat" after winning in Montreal last week.

It's extremely hard to win back-to-back titles like that, and you have to be on top form to beat Fed any time. And who knows? Maybe this time Murray will win the "big one" and beat Fed there in the process.;)

Federer wins Cincinnati Masters

World number one Roger Federer defeated Novak Djokovic of Serbia on Sunday to win the Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament.

The Swiss won 6-1, 7-5. It was his third win in Cincinnati and his 61st career singles title.

He dominated the match from the beginning, winning the first set in 32 minutes.

"A good start always helps," Federer said after the match. "This whole week has been great to me. It's a fantastic year already.

After a lean year in 2008, it was his fourth title of the season. It makes him a strong favourite for the US Open, which begins in New York next week. He is aiming for his sixth consecutive win at Flushing Meadows.

Federer said in Cincinnati that the win had been an emotional experience, since it was his first victory since becoming a father in July.

Federer is now 2,430 points ahead of world number two Andy Murray in the ATP ranking. He beat the Scotsman in the semi-finals on Saturday.

  • 2 weeks later...

Terribly disappointed for Dementieva, yet again promising so much but not delivering.

It's a chore following the US Open... Stupid timezones mean all the action happens when I'm asleep :shifty: Good to have DVR though.

Thats true. Really uncomfortable timezone here for the US Open..

I dont watch the matches too.. : / Maybe only at the weekend..

The woman's seeds are falling like flies.

How did it go from possibly having a Dementieva vs Sharapova match up to both of them now being out. :dozey:

But the Williams ogres are still in...................................

I sincerely hope that its not going to be a repeat of the Wimbledon final would be one big yawn.

I sincerely hope that its not going to be a repeat of the Wimbledon final would be one big yawn.

It always is with those two............................. :dozey:

I reckon they should ban "All-Williams" finals!!:P

What an awkward result Clijsters and Williams goes to three sets but two of them are 6-0.

Zvonareva is literally having a meltdown in the third set.

Well Venus is out now...

Great! Who knocked her out??:D

Clijsters, 6-0, 0-6, 6-4

Celebration time, come on!!:D
