ColdplayCold
I dont know if they found a performer yet, i havent been keep tabs on it as much this year. But i was reading an article that said "what about coldplay"...READ Newswise — David Allan, Ph.D., an entertainment marketing expert, says Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band’s slotted performance during Super Bowl XLIII’s halftime show is just another example of the NFL playing it safe. “Remember when rock was risky?” asks Allan. “Well now it’s the safest thing to broadcast during Super Bowl halftime, except for country.” Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” at halftime of the 2004 game compelled the NFL to skew away from younger and bolder performers in favor of older and more mainstream acts. “Ever since Janet and Justin Timberlake decided to play dress up, or dress down as the case may be, the NFL has avoided taking risks,” says Allan. He believes acts like The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers alienate an increasingly larger, younger demographic of the Super Bowl’s viewing audience. “There are some great bands from the ’70s that are still rockin’, but they have little appeal for many viewers in their 20s or early 30s,” says Allan. “Can’t the NFL get a little younger?” Looking toward next year, Allan has a suggestion for NFL corporate: “How about Beyonce:rolleyes: or even Coldplay?” Allan, an assistant professor of marketing at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, has over 20 years of experience in media and ethics. In 2004, he was appointed to a National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Subcommittee on Indecency following the Janet Jackson Super Bowl incident. http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/548393/ What do you think? RedGirl76
Is it not normally American artists that play? I know The Stones did, but they're legends, they're in another league
Pseudonym
Never gonna happen Coldplay is too "poppy" for a Super Bowl show, they are not American, too many people here hate them, and they don't even know the difference between a touchback and a safety. I love Coldplay, but it just isn't going to happen ever.
Coldplay Junior
they got the jonas brothers on thanksgiving and they were lipsyncing which was a joy to watch. But yeah I don't think coldplay would necessarily be the Super-Bowlish type of band.

ApproximatelyInfinite
the superbowl performer doesn't have to be american. paul mccartney, U2, the stones...i know they're legends, but it has nothing to do with being "american;" i don't think people would balk at an artist just because they were british or something. two years ago, i laughed at the idea of coldplay doing the superbowl, i thought they'd never do it. now, i think they're more likely to do it than they were two years ago, but i still don't really see them doing it. even though they're "big" enough, and i think the music is epic enough...i just don't think it's a very "coldplay" thing to do. i see the superbowl as being for legends and overproduced popular stuff, not coldplay who falls somewhere between the two. it's hard to describe what i mean, but basically, i think it's possible in a few years, but not likely. WV Gal
I just found out that bruce springsteen is playing. why dont they get some newer artists? this is bullshit They've had "newer" artists perform at the Super Bowl. There was No Doubt, Shania Twain, Justin Timberlake, and many others. The reason why they have been going with some of the more established artists is because of Nipple Gate. Remember? Janet Jackson exposing her boob on TV due to Justin grabbing her top. That is the reason why the NFL has stopped using MTV Productions to produce their Super Bowl show. The NFL wants performers who will put on a good show, who won't offend the advertisers, the FCC, and families, and who respect the guidelines that the NFL has set up. A few years ago, Prince performed, and he may not have been the best choice to some, but he met those guidelines. Personally, I don't have a problem with their musicial choices. I have liked them all. Never gonna happen Coldplay is too "poppy" for a Super Bowl show, they are not American, too many people here hate them, and they don't even know the difference between a touchback and a safety. I love Coldplay, but it just isn't going to happen ever. 1) It has nothing to do with the fact that they are not American. (They've had non-Americans perform). 2)It has nothing to do wiht the notion that they are too "poppy" for a Super Bowl show. (Check out some of their past performers to see that is not the case) 3) It has nothing to do with people not liking them. 4) I don't think the NFL cares whether the guys know the difference between a touchback and a safety. Never say never. One day the NFL may ask Coldplay to perform, and I am sure the guys would accept because it's one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Then again, the NFL may not ask them, and if they don't ask them it is not because of those reasons. Nipple Gate changed everything, and IMO, it changed it for the better. The NFL has guidlelines and a lot of those artists were not respecting those guidelines.
Lizzybear
yeah i dont think Coldplay would do it even if they are asked..just not there style you kno... WV Gal
The Super Bowl is not a brand name. It's a major sporting event just like the WC and the Olympics. These events are huge and reach far across the spectrum. Any artist that performs at the Super Bowl are not promoting the Super Bowl, they are promoting themselves and their music. I am not saying that they would perform at the Super Bowl if they were ever ask, but I'm sure they would at least think about it. Performing at the Super Bowl is considered to be a honor for many because of it's magnitude.

WV Gal
I'm just saying, based on my knowledge of the culture behind the Super Bowl, they will not be offered a spot. Actually, the culture of the Super Bowl, as far as the music goes, is really marching bands. It wasn't until the 80's (I think) that they start asking artists to perform. The point is....the Super Bowl and all its dynamics have changed with the times and it will keep changing. One day they might be asked to perform or they might not. One never knows. Corkus
The article specifically mentions bands from the 70's being a turn-off for younger viewers, so even if they inch up a decade or two, the context indicates that Coldplay may still be a bit too "recent". And I don't even know the difference between a touchback and a safety.:P Heck, when the game is actually playing, I take my breaks for the bathroom and drinks. I only stay for the commercials and maybe halfimte.

localola86
^Yes, the news of The Boss playing for half-time has been known for a while Although I would have preferred Coldplay, of course. WV Gal
The asked Bruce Springsteen who should play at next year's Super Bowl Halftime show and he said it should be Coldplay. So, The Boss is a fan of Coldplay and realizes that they can put on a very entertaining show. I hope the NFL would at least look at Coldplay because they meet their requirements and they know they are going to get a good show.
coldplay_is_louve.
now i'm thinking how awesome it would be if they were performing. :wideeyed:. the superbowl would be fun to watch. but they probably never will, cause their audience is a bunch of 40 year old men with beer bellies. :dozey:.
