Got tickets yesterday. Didn't know about the presale so I had to fight for some seats way up in the back. At least they're not lawn tickets though. It was crazy because by 10:05 Ticketmaster was saying all that was left was the lawn. But I kept trying and at about 10:30 I finally got some seats in the 200s. The whole thing was so annoying though!

Its fairly small, which = feeling fairly intimate. If your on the lawn, you should bring something for shade if you arrive early-can be hot! If your under covered seating, it can feel a little clausterphobic:thinking: I thought the sound in this place to be crap, but was up front at stage, so maybe being back aways it may sound better. IMHO. Traffic after is a real bitch too- hang out for awhile, maybe you can catch the band lurking around waiting for traffic to clear too:sneaky:

Now that they've announced a Vancouver date... I really need to sell this Portland ticket I have. I couldn't really afford to take that trip anyway but I thought it was the only way I would get to see them. Now I look like a bit of a fool for buying that ticket when they're coming to my city. The ticket is for Section 103 Row S Seat 30 and I'd be willing to sell it for just the $97.50 american without all the ticketmaster charges I paid on top of that. If any honest souls out there have a friend that might want a ticket for the show please PM me so I can figure out how to exchange this ticket so we can both be assured that we'll be getting what we both promise.

I have a single ticket that I'm trying to sell.

Section 101, row N, seat 3. That's 14th row, covered section.

See seating chart link below in my sig.

Willing to sell for $100 even. I'll take the hit on the extra charges.

PM me if interested.

Amphitheater at Clark County still racks up losses

large_ampup22_9.JPG

The approval process for the amphitheater began in 1997. By the time that concluded and the amphitheater opened for business in 2003, much had changed in the music business, as well as consumers' approach to discretionary spending. Those factors have helped contribute to the amphitheater's lackluster financial performance, its operator says.

VANCOUVER -- Ever since its opening in 2003, the Amphitheater at Clark County has waited for people to show it some love.

And, the developers figure, what's not to love? They built the place, handed over ownership to the people, paid the rent on time, brought in the talent and poured the beer. But as the amphitheater enters its seventh season of summer concerts, there is little reason to think it will reverse a long-standing money-losing trend.

A consultant's report said the venue at the fairgrounds in Ridgefield had operating losses of $1 million to $3 million a year in each of its first five years in business.

On the bright side, its opening show of the summer, Coldplay, is sold out July 10 -- the first time any act has sold out the place.

But a number of issues have stood in the way of the public's full embrace of the 18,000-seat amphitheater, the metro area's biggest outdoor music venue. Among them, operators say: noise concerns among nearby neighbors, the headaches for its Oregon audience stalled in rush-hour traffic en route to a weeknight concert or the perception that parking is one of the rings in Dante's Inferno.

County staff members told commissioners last year that it was possible the operators would simply leave the amphitheater, noting that other outdoor arenas around the country have closed in recent years. Still, Quincunx of Washington LLC has no such plans, though Dan Braun, the music industry veteran who runs the amphitheater, acknowledges the summer slate of four concerts is slim.

Another bright spot, besides Coldplay: The Clark County Fair, for the first time, will put on two shows in the amphitheater -- four bands with headliner Staind on Aug. 10 and comedian Larry the Cable Guy on Aug. 11. And more national acts are expected to sign as summer continues and the amphitheater finds out whether its open dates mesh with touring schedules and monetary requirements -- a typical on-the-fly approach in the concert industry.

Braun, originally from Milwaukee, has slowly come to understand the quirks of the amphitheater's home turf. He knows that even though the place was built to appeal to the Portland market and up to 70 percent of its audience is from Oregon, there's a regional sensitivity on the Washington side of the river.

An entertainer yelling, "Hello, Portland!" from the amphitheater stage, a few miles from downtown Ridgefield and even more from Vancouver, is a cause for either chuckling or outright grumbling among some concertgoers. Even Braun has only modest hope of turning a profit this summer. All major outdoor amphitheaters are struggling, says Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief of the industry publication Pollstar.

It has been increasingly difficult over the past decade for venue operators to succeed, Bongiovanni says. This difficult environment has emerged as ticket prices have nearly doubled in that span, he notes, from an average of $32.20 in 1998 to $67.33 last year. Most ticket money goes to the performers. The venue operator typically depends on concession sales to make a profit. "It's not the best business model in the world," Bongiovanni says.

By November, Quincunx is expected to enclose the indoor seating with a movable wall. That's expected to make the amphitheater a more versatile venue for different types of events. But even Bongiovanni, based in Fresno, Calif., has heard about one of the biggest impediments to success for the amphitheater. Referring to the Interstate Bridge, he says, "Don't they have a real tiny bridge?"

Well, as I've had no luck selling my ticket, and I've given my mom a big ol' "I.O.U Lots of money" if she ends up heading down there with me for the weekend, it looks as though I may be going afterall! I'm trying to sell the ticket still, but if it doesn't sell by the 6th or so, then I'll be heading down!

So I have a few questions if there are any Portland people lurking around here...

how are portland crowds in general? I hope they're lively ^.^ because I'm going to be dancing my ass off and I hope I'm not the only one. :P

Any suggestions on hotels to stay at that aren't too pricy, in a safe area and aren't too far away from the venue?

Also, I was too shy to approach any roadies to butter them up to get a seat upgrade at the Vancouver shows... I was wondering if anyone had any um...suggestions for subtle ways to get noticed for this sort of thing? Is just trying to chat them up and maybe mentioning traveling to see the show maybe enough to perhaps get one of those killer seats they reserve for the super fans?

*sigh* looks like I'll be missing the show. had a look at our finances, definitely could not afford a trip this month, slashed the price of my ticket to about 40 bucks and it sold on stubhub finally.

Super sad to not get to see Coldplay again, was looking forward to this gig as it seemed that I would be going. However, everyone going, have LOTS OF FUN and lets hear back from you on how the gig was!!!

Viva Coldplay: Brit rock, well-done

2009435226.jpg

Coldplay, one of the biggest rock bands on the planet, begins its Viva La Vida arena tour with shows in Portland (at the Amphitheater at Clark County) on July 10, and in the Seattle area at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Grant County on July 11.

Beg your pardon, but would you mind if we, well, took over the world?

Quietly and politely, Coldplay has become one of the biggest musical acts on the planet. They did it with some dreamy piano pop, a sensitive, falsettoed frontman, and that U.K. magic that's worked for the likes of the Beatles, U2 and Radiohead.

Coldplay has been accused of being bland, even yawn-inducing (a British TraveLodge poll voted them the Band Most Likely to Put You to Sleep). But that hasn't stopped them from selling more than 30 million albums and trucking in a heap of Grammys.

They're so big their tours are massive spectacles only appropriately launched with a trio of continent-spanning free concerts. (And speaking of gigs, they're playing the Gorge Amphitheatre Saturday — not free, but sure to be epic.)

But their fourth album released last year is a testament to Coldplay's willingness to change, evolve and improve to stay at the top. With "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," the British foursome staged a revolution — a well-behaved one, of course.

Before you even get to the music, the album's cover art is Eugène Delacroix's painting of "Liberty Leading the People." And the first half of the name is a battle cry: "Long Live Life."

Dubbed by the band as their "experimental album," "Viva" does forge new territory, for them. Under the guidance of producers Brian Eno and Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire), the songs benefit from Middle Eastern instruments, exotic percussion and galloping guitar melodies. Chris Martin has reeled in his soaring falsetto and wraps the melodies with a deeper baritone. His lyrics veer more political than past albums.

Eno did what he could to break the band of old habits and shake them from their insecurities. They spent time in Spanish cathedrals ("Cemeteries of London" has some Flamenco-inspired hand claps). They built their own pianos. Eno even hired a hypnotist to put them in a trance for some of their music making.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the ever-self-deprecating Martin said, "Things like the hypnotism, all these little crazy experiments that he tried with us was just an effort to say, 'It's OK. Not everybody hates you because you're in Coldplay. Just play some music and don't worry about it.' "

Eno produced a number of U2 albums, most notably "The Joshua Tree." His influence comes through on a track like "Lovers in Japan," with its striding rhythm, or on "Lost!," with its Edge- inspired guitar solo. You can also hear strains of Radiohead, Blur, even My Bloody Valentine.

"We look at what other people are doing and try and steal all the good bits," Martin said in an interview with MTV. "We steal from so many different places that hopefully it becomes untraceable."

They have created a blend that's all their own, but they're not reinventing Brit rock. Just doing it well. And for that, the album really wasn't the sort of experiment that proves risky. That's a smart move for a group with a huge fan base to keep happy and gargantuan arenas to fill on their current 100-stop Viva la Vida world tour, which begins in the Portland area tonight.

But fill they will (the Gorge has long been sold out). "Viva" does nothing except solidify Coldplay's place at the top. It was the best-selling album of 2008 and won the 2009 Grammy for Best Rock Album.

And it's arena-worthy for sure. Not only are the melodies soaring and the choruses begging to be sung along to, its themes tackle the big guns: life, death, love, war, peace. That is to say the album is universal. Appropriate for this moment's biggest band in the world.
