Yeah man, we shot you harder and our leader decided to take the moral high ground on slavery and make that his cause even though he wasn't particularly against it, so we are better people than you basically

Well he spent a lot of money slaughtering 600,000 Americans. (Something Osama bin Laden could only dream of).

Interesting factiod: So much money was spent on that war, he could have simply used it to buy all the slaves!

You already said that once! point reusal!

Even if he bought all the slaves, though, it wouldn't get rid of the practice of slavery.

It wasn't even about the slaves though, that's the badly worded point I was trying to make, he just used that as a tool to get people on his side.

Person Whose Name I Don't Know, I think you and Jay are going to get along famously. :P

Yep, but they still teach kids in public schools that it was about slavery. :D

I mean, if you believe that then you probably also believe in Santa Clause... or the idea the government can do anything better than the private sector.

No, you guys were part of the Union during the civil war :P.

I'd say the South probably starts at Tennessee where I live. Not that I'm really upset or anything, but its really annoying how shows like Family Guy make a habit of showcasing the south as being very primitive and only inhabited by ignorant rednecks (which is far from the case). There's a certain political and cultural arrogance thats come over that show in recent years. Like the way the writers caricature southerners or stick a Mccain badge on a nazi soldier during the election.

@Ellie: Cool. I'm Sara.

You seem pretty smart. Have a thumbs-up. :nice:

@Tnspieler: But a lot of people in Kentucky ACT like this is the South. A lot of people I know, at least. Saying where the South starts is really difficult.

Well it's their way of making themselves feel superior. In much the same way Southern racists came up with the myth that black people are an inferior subspecies, Northern elitists view Southerners as the scum of the Earth.

Everybody needs somebody to pick on.

I hate it when people whether they're from Georgia or New York, emphasize a divide between North and South. The civil war ended a long time ago, but seems like everyone wants to maintain a sense of "us and them". Like things are that much different on the other side of a fictitious line.

Lol, you sort of beat me to the point, and you're absolutely right.

As an anarchist, I view every little dispute like this as a side effect of statism. For all the pomp and circumstance surrounding the Federal Government, it sure does resemble a slave driver.

EDIT: There's a great quote, from an old Boss Tweed cartoon, that went something like this: "You can always hire half the poor people to kill the other half." That's the perfect definition of the Civil War. Lincoln broke from the gold standard (by printing greenbacks) to pay his soldiers' salaries.

EVERY little dispute? Even the REALLY little ones?

Isn't that, in a sense, part of what's been going on with the genocide in Darfur?

  • Author

Yes. That's his point. :P That's what happens in basically any civil war/conflict/what have you.

EVERY little dispute? Even the REALLY little ones?

Well any dispute that isn't between individuals is in some way a collectivist argument. Like the Hattfield and McCoy family fight that lasted generations, until their descendants forgot what the hell they were fighting about to begin with. Or the Israel v Palestine dispute.

None of the individual participants would actually die or give money (voluntarily) to continue these fights. They'd rather have a fatter paycheck and trade with their enemies. But their governments (the parasitic class) continue to tax them and continue to use their money to keep the fights going because it makes them look necessary. ("If it weren't for us, you'd be immediately invaded by the Chinese!" etc.)

Another great quote: War is like the stock market for violence. By spreading the risk from one or two investors (fighters) to thousands of investors (soldiers), you make it easier to grow profits (violence) because each individual views the risk to him as being somehow diminished. (diversification)
