The thread where anyone can talk about anything

Here's another interesting psychology trick they should use in schools:

If you separate boys and girls, both groups end up making better grades, with the boys showing even more improvement than the girls.

Probably because they aren't as distracted. O.o That's interesting, though. What study is that from? Because if it only surveyed Catholic schools vs. regular schools, or some such, that could be because Catholic schools have better teachers as a general rule.

School would be so much easier for us guys if we had our own classes. The way guys and girls think is simply different, it doesn't work putting us together.

I would be bored because in school I talk more to boys...

Yes but you'd be more focused on school.

When I was in middle school I remember everybody making fun of homeschooled kids for being socially inept. Then I went on a homeschool field trip with my brother (who was home schooled) and a bunch of other homeschooled kids. It turned out they were the most mature, approachable people I've ever met. And not only that, they could actually socialize with kids who were older/younger than they were. If I end up having kids I'll definitely consider homeschooling them.

That is the worst stereotype towards home-schoolers. And while there are always exceptions, the truth is that most home-schoolers are organized into groups where they socialize and attend classes together almost on a daily basis. I personally was very fortunate because my mom organized a group that at one point had about a hundred families involved. It was wonderful! We had field trips almost every week, baseball and soccer groups, a chess club, curling and book discussion once a week, and days when he just played at the park.

The big perks were A. I wasn't just a dot in a crowded classroom. My mom and I had the ability to focus on whatever field I needed improvement on. You can't underestimate the value of individual attention.

B. I never felt any discomfort towards my classes. Learning and going to school was fun. We reviewed material by holding student-run jeopardy games. During history, we would go to one of my friends houses and eat pizza during class. The learning environment was second-to-none.

C. Since I wasn't stuck in a classroom five days a week, I had all the freedom and time in the world to pursue my interests. In my typical school day I was given a list of work to complete my the end of the day. So I could go golfing, take piano lessons, or see a movie with friends everyday, as long as I got my work done that night.

And from an Anarchist perspective. Do you really want the government educating your kids? Public schools, especially around the south are a joke when it comes to actually educating your children. The best bets are either private schools or home-schooling. And while the latter is time consuming, its a lot cheaper.

I think the results would certanly be better, but honestly I like when there's guys in my classes they just always make it better and more fun, I don't know if it's the same way for the guys with girls. But if it had to be all girls I would hate it, no offence to me and everyone of my own gender (If that even makes sence:P) but when it's only girls they can be so fckin annoying sometimes.

@Josh:

I am quite focused, I don't want to be even more.

And boys are interesting to talk with. (especially when I'm bored in classes)

I guess you're an exception then. :D

In school I'm never focused. I mostly sleep/talk/listen to music/play games on my computer.

And boys are also nice to look at. :wiseguy:

Sorry, had to throw that in there. :p

Thanks for that interesting post, Chris. Growing up in a public school is tantamount to being in the military - you walk in lines, you change classes when you hear the bell, you're tested relentlessly. It's anti-individual.

I'm still looking for the study about separating the sexes in school, but I remember the researchers speculated the reason the boys improved so much was because they are more competitive when there aren't girls around. Boys have a natural desire to be the best.

But yeah, Josh is right. The whole "sit down and shut up" theory of learning really does work better for girls in general.

Another interesting area I've been studying is Montessori schools. Both the co-founders of Google went to them, so they're obviously capable of generating an innovative class.

Agreed, I don't think sending me to an all-boys school would have helped me much in that regard. :P

I've always wished I went to a Montessori school :(

It would be cool if I could talk to you in my classes then, because some of my friends are jerks lately. :(

Yes, when you have handsome boys in your class. NOT the case here...

I am going to type something about my school in my next post. Maybe you all will find it interesting...

What?? No it isn't! Rar.

From my experience in school girls have always gotten better grades and guys have gotten better test scores. Trying to pretend we don't learn differently is naive.

I agree. Thats what you get when you try to encompass all the nations children under one system. Not the best environment for producing passionate, inspired individuals. When my group died down to about ten of my friends, school was just something we did while hanging out. My friend Ben dresses in all black with long hair we described as a frollet (afro-mullet). And he would tell crude jew-jokes (jokingly of course) during science class taught by the mom's of another friend in the class who was jewish. And everyone, including the teacher would just laugh.

Try pulling that off in public school.

I actually once read a study just like that saying girls generally did better in all-female classes because they don't have the taboo of being nerdy and intellectual around guys in the class. Or something like that...

You know how in America, politicians think spending more money will mean better grades? Yet we keep spending money and the grades keep going down.

There's a simple solution to this. Just give students $100 for every A they get on a test. $50 for every B. And $20 for every C. Considering we already spend around $400,000 per classroom in America, this would be a paltry sum of money. But students would be so encouraged to study, they'd treat school like it was their job.

20$ for a C? Lol

At my school if you pass an AP final you get like 100 bucks or something.

That's interesting, but not everything is based on money though. Say you're in a class with people who have learning disabilities, and you're a genious so if you're getting $100 everytime, and they're not how would that make them feel. And plus if you were only learning to get payed, you would never really learn for your own good ...:\

I've always wished I went to a Montessori school :(

pardon me for busting in here but i did and i hated it b/c they would not let us color out of the lines!!!!

I'm sorry. :(

That's ok...

Here:

We here in Serbia first have 8 years of elementary school. Then 3 or 4 years of high school. Then faculty/uni/whatever.

I went through the first 6 years regularly. Then I started going to an experimental class in one of the high schools here, which means:

-more math

-more physics

-all other subjects are the same like in ordinary elementary schools

-kids not calling me a nerd

-A LOT better teachers

-... a bunch of other stuff that is better than in ordinary elementary schools

The difference really exists. The quality of classes is a lot better and we learn a lot more, subjects are more interesting and the teachers are ready to answer all of our questions and help us.

Now I'm in 8th grade and I'm going to go to the same high school where I already am (we don't have to if we don't want to).

If you have any questions, ask.

$100? That amounts to probably 50 cents per hour of studying necessary to pass the damn thing.

Considering how much money the government steals from property owners every year, $20 for a C is the least they could do.

Something similar actually happened at my school. (actually, I think something similar has happened a few times.) But that's because my school is REALLY AMAZING. :smug: It's the public school where they lump all of the nerds/geeks/weird people/gay people into one school and then add a teacher population that is 80% awesome. It is the best public school ever. :D Apparently I am an extremely lucky child, though.
