I mean it's an amazing city, why do they destroy it? What's the point?

NYC is very loved so the viewer feels an emotional attatchment to it so when it's destroyed, they are more emotionally involved with the movie.

NYC is an amazing city, but it just has the look to be destroyed in American films. Wouldn't be as interesting if it was some small town being destroyed.
