MGMTs Kids=CPs LiT?

Featured Replies

hi,

I've been playing 'Kids' by MGMT (first released in 2005, single in late 2008) on piano and at some point i wondered how similiar it sounded to coldplay's Life in technicolor: Chords and even the riff theme.

what do you think about this?

have i missed mgmt accusing coldplay of plagiarism?

fortunately lit was not as succsessfull as vlv, otherwise...

I don't hear it.

But somewhere on youtube there's a LIT and Kids remix.

I've heard people say that before, but they don't sound very similar to me, personally... :uhoh:

well, 3 of 4 chords are the same...

i wonder if coldplay listens to those electro stuff

i love both of these songs and i have listened to them many many times b4......they are both kind of upbeat and sort of have the same feeling to them....but no i dont think they sound alike.

and i dont get it how ppl always compare chords and stuff......im no pro at music theory or whatever but there are thousands of songs that use the same chords and everything. i mean if it was such a big deal to have the same similar chords then elvis and the beatles should be sueing everyone that came after them.......sometimes there is just overlap of chords i guess. but that doesnt mean one person copied the other

Hmmm.... I'm hearing the two songs in my head, but i honestly cannot hear that much similarity.

There's a slight similarity chord wise. And the 3 consecutive notes repeated at the start and the chorus.

But that doesn't mean Coldplay has plagarised. As Will said, there are only that many chords and that many notes in the musical scale!

they dont sound alike. but they sound good together.

although i feel like that mix could have been made better. seems kids should have come in earlied IMO

1. what's funny is I just realized a few days ago that I knew five completely unrelated songs with the same chord progression. apart from these two, Yiruma's 'river flows in you'. george winston's 'lullaby' and I think parts of sigur ros's 'hafsol' have that exact F#m, D, A chord progression (with some inclusion of E later on)...

Its a beautiful and very simple chord progression, meaning that there are thousands of popular songs with it, and its not even a coincidence that these songs share that (although MGMT's song has a G# every 4th chord, whereas LIT only has an E chord at the very end of the riff).

Melodically speaking they are completely different. 'Kids' melody just goes from A up to G# and back, while LIT bounces back and forth between notes and is a whole lot faster. They're not even close really...so no, coldplay definitely didn't plagiarize in this case, and MGMT wouldn't have any case if they tried to sue.
