i kinda got sick of the whole empire of the sun thing early on. they made a couple of good songs but i think there are loads of other bands who deserve much more recognition than them.

Listening to me basement birds cd.... ah......

  • Author

oh dear!! our beloved basement birds have had to downgrade their sydney show from the enmore to the metro theatre. in a city of over 4 million they've struggled to ship even 1000 tickets, and there i was thinking the basement birds hype machine was in overdrive.

Oh no!! Well they can't possibly downgrade the one in Brissy, I think :P

I got an email saying they'd posted the cd a few days ago but it got sent to brissie so it'll be a week or so before I can listen to it.

Agreed. Solid song still.

They were charging too much in my opinion.

Hey, this new Cut Copy song sounds very inspired by Kasabian. It's like dance meets thumping, lad-rock. An interesting shift.

No Way!

Some big BDO 2011 Leaks I found out about today. Now whether they're true or not...

With barely six months to go until the Big Day Out kicks off in Auckland before heading across the ditch to do a lap around Australia, the Tone Deaf moles have been busy passing on information back to HQ so we can let you know who’s playing first. We haven’t had any more rock stars shooting off their mouths about how much they’re looking forward to having a summer holiday touring around Australia since our last update, but we have had a few leaks coming through. The Tone Deaf computer nerds are good at tracking ISP addresses and we think these all look pretty kosher.

So without further ado, in addition to Hot Hot Heat and The National, we also hear M.I.A, Hole (looks like they may forgive her for her last BDO tour bad behaviour), Gorillaz (they’re cheap because you don’t have to get hookers and cocaine for cartoon characters), Cut Copy and The Temper Trap. Keep checking back here for more tips and leaks as we get ‘em. If you have some info to share hit us up at [email protected]

Update July 15th, 11:30am Just got some wind of some other rumours floating around that include Primus, MGMT, Black Keys, Fatboy Slim, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, and Deftones. We’ll let you know more once we get something more concrete.

THEN, LATER:

We’ll keep adding to this as the months go by, as foreign rock stars can’t help but shoot their mouth off about how much they’re looking forward to spending their winter touring around Australia in our Summer. A Tone Deaf spy confirms that Canadian band Hot Hot Heat have blabbed they’ll be down under for the BDO. Send all your tips and leaks on the line up to [email protected] and we’ll follow them up.

Update: June 18 10:00 am US gloom merchants The National have told an interviewer that they’ll be ‘in Australia and New Zealand in January.’

My pick is Falls for National.

Given all the rumors and album releases and past line-ups the big day out 2011 could very well look like this.

Stone Temple Pilots

Hole

Gorillaz

My Chemical Romance

the National

Hot Hot Heat

MGMT

Deftones

Dropkick Murphys

the Streets

Ok Go

Chemical Brothers

Fat Boy Slim

M.I.A

LCD Soundsystem

The Black Keys

Manic Street Preachers

Arcade Fire

Phoenix

chemical brothers are here in march so no way. phoenix have been here twice in less than year so no way. the national seem like more of a Falls band. gorillaz have knocked back offers from some of the biggest festivals in the world so no way.

my chem romance, hole, STP and arcade fire will all demand to be at the top of the bill or at least near the top, so i dont see all of them being on it. also the fact that LCD soundsystem can sell out big rooms like the hordern at the blink of an eye will mean they deserve a spot on the main stage also. add to that the usual aussie suspects i just dont see where they will all fit in.

thanks for the inside info alex. alot of those acts seem very very likely to be at BDO 2011 but the high number of questionable inclusions kinda destroys the credibility of this list for me.

I'm actually kinda hoping for a not-very-good lineup because I'm not sure I'll be able to afford to go, after this year!

Well Chemical Brothers seems correct, yeah they won't be at BDO because of the March tour. As for National, I think Falls too but you never know. As for Gorillaz, I wouldnt put it past them, I guess we can only dream...

As for Phoenix, yes they were here twice but bands return easily too. Plus they havent done a festival here in a while so my money's on them. What usual Aussie bands people reckon we'll see? Surely Cut Copy will get a go but it may clash with their album release. Silverchair? They have a record out at the end of the year...

Manics have another record out this year and haven't toured for a while, would be the big UK rock act, plus MGMT havent done a festival since meredith a few years ago and with Congratulations out this year... I agree there's a few big names but there's always big names competing. And they can do mid-afternoon slots, Kasabian did this year.

I pulled this list from another site by the way

^^

i think john butler trio will be the "headline" aussie act unless they can get Grinderman. the reason why i doubt phoenix is because they were here for splendour in 09 headline tour this year and without any plans of recording a new album, doing a 3rd visit for the same album seems a bit of a stretch and kinda boring.

its so hard to predict these lineups because there are countless other festivals that could steal the big names especially soundwave and laneway. at the moment im leaning towards going to laneway and save myself 50 bucks as well as dealing with 55 000 bogans.

Yeah JBT are close to being a sure thing. Soundwave have announced 9 acts so far, I wish BDO would leak them too instead of having to wait until September... Laneway isn't that great, would have to be some amazing artists to get me back in 2011. Especially since I am considering Falls festival.

Silverchair? They have a record out at the end of the year...

I know someone who saw Silverchair at Groovin' the Moo... they also saw them a few years earlier when they did that double tour with Powderfinger, and they think they've lost their touch a bit :\

Well in 3 weeks Falls is announced, so I guess we just eliminate from then...

And yeah the chair got bad raps. Ive never seen them live though, would be kinda cool

Oh and Mystery Jets for Falls. Although they did it in 2008, so they might not want to recycle acts.

Might be a long shot, but I think I might be onto something... Kooks for BDO. They did Falls in 2008 also but I think they're mainstream enough now. And plus they're putting out an album at the end of the year

yeah even though i love silverchairs music especially neon ballroom and diorama. they are easily one of the worst live bands at the moment, daniel johns is a pompous ****** on stage, he was actually more mature as a teenager.
