I thought Bryce was supposed to but it doesn't matter if it's him or the person who made the tape I guess :inquisitive:

Awesome reviews

Thanks =)

I really like this song and I quite like their last album "Junior"

I got my mixtape 30 minutes ago but I will listen to it tomorrow because I'm a bit tired now and I want to enjoy it so it will be for tomorrow ;)

got my PM... downloading

Ok, I got 18 bitchy rapidshare links that I can't download.

Rapidshare's been a really annoying bitch lately... probably you could ask the people who made your tape for you to UL it to something nicer like mediafire?

Daniel, for you is a little worse, since if you're not a premium user you gotta wait like 15 mins between downloads.

I got my mixtape. I'll listen to it and post a review in a few hours.

I know :(

I downloaded mine and there was an error unarchiving it. (I'm using a mac). So I downloaded another program just to find out that there are no songs on the mix... :laugh3:

I guess the person must've forgot to add it to a folder or something.

I've received a link to the tape. Will listen tomorrow probably.

I think I will write my review now, while I have the mixtape running through my ears.

Track 1: I really, really, REALLY like this one. Throughout the first third of the song (approximately), I got this lovely Sigur Rós feel about it. However, it's a bit edgier than Sigur Rós, and I guess for that reason, I kinda like it better. I'm not sure yet, as I haven't listened to it enough yet. I confirmed it to not be some unknown Sigur Rós son when the singing started, as the singer sings in English. The singer's voice is actually quite reminiscent of Chris Martin, even though I know it's not Chris Martin. I appreciate the extensive use of borrowed chords in this song. I can't wait to find out the identity of this band/artist. This will probably be one of those bands that sticks with me. :)

Track 2: This track starts off with a rather catchy bass line. The singer's voice isn't of a style that I'm familiar with, and therefore, I find it slightly off-putting. I will say that I rather like the lyrical content. Something tells me that because of that, this is an indie band of some sort. I appreciate the transition from duple to triple time; that sort of thing breaks any monotony that might be present in the song. Speaking of which, in those duple parts, I do like the higher male voice that sings with the lead in what I assume is the chorus of the song.

Track 3: I got a sort of Nintendo feel at the very beginning due to the synths; it was rather cheeky. I disliked how I couldn't understand what the singer was saying; I was really having to listen closely. I did eventually find that this singer sings in English, which I suppose is a sort of plus. Ahhh, I just heard some bongos/other assorted drums. Very lovely. I feel that if the singer was different, I might appreciate the song more. The music itself is highly interesting, however, and for that alone, I appreciate the track.

Track 4: My first impression was that this was some sort of synthy version of Interpol, even though I don't really know Interpol's music that well in itself. There's a lovely little trumpet lick in here that repeats itself in the music, and I really like it. The singer's not too bad, and I have determined that this is indeed not Interpol; the guy's voice isn't nearly as brash. Actually, this song kinda reminds me of Blue October. For this reason, I have a strong feeling this may be a work of The Frames, because The Frames remind me of Blue October. My mix person or Bryce can verify or disprove my theory. :)

Track 5: I heard the ukelele and automatically thought Beirut. Then I heard Zach Condon's voice playing through my ears and got excited. I'm extremely happy that my mix person put this in here. I must say, however, that although I recognize who this is, I don't know what this song is. I searched through my entire Beirut discography and didn't find a match. All I can say is that this song is either off an EP I don't have (which would have to be, by default, the Lon Gisland EP), it's from some side project that Zach Condon did, or I'm just that dumb and missed something. But anyway, thanks to my mix person. I can't wait to figure out what this one is.

Track 6: I love the opening cello bit in this song. This also has somewhat of an ambient feeling, but it contains more strings. The singer's voice is much better here; it's clear, crisp, and it doesn't bother me. It's a rather soft voice. Maaan, this string work is just lovely. Why do I feel like I've heard this particular singer before? It sounds familiar, although I don't know why, since I don't have anything like this in my music library. This is also an artist to look more into.

Track 7: "Hold on, hold on, children. Your mother and father are leaving, leaving." I can tell that from these lyrics, this song is going to be a bit depressing. The beginning confirms this mood. Then it suddenly goes into this faster tempo with a catchy, dance-like bass riff. I also detect a use of a clap machine. After the beginning part, I get this Franz Ferdinand feeling within the song. Considering I like Franz Ferdinand, this is a good sign. This song is catchy. I rather like this one. This string section here nearing the end is lovely, too.

Track 8: I got a grunge-ish feeling from the guitar in the beginning of the song. It's rather calming, actually. Then, the singer came in on a high B-flat. I wasn't bothered until he hit the following G so harshly. This song makes me think of Dashboard Confessional, although I'm pretty sure it's not that band due to the voice. This voice is a bit too shaky to be Chris Carraba's. Anyway, those harsh G attacks are really the only issue I have with this voice. It's a nice, subtle ending to the song as well. This song is simple, but good.

Track 9: The ethereal beginning gave me a sense of this maybe being something ambient. Then the piano came in, which was lovely, and combined with the introduction of guitar, that changed my mind. I'm sorry, mix partner, but this guy's voice bothers me, particularly in his higher register. He sounds like a whiny old man. I'm not saying he is, and I'm not saying the song sucks, because I love the background music. I suppose this track is like Track 2, except the singer here is just like...ICK. :/ Well, I suppose one can't expect somebody to like EVERYTHING on the mixtape. I'm trying to be accepting, but it's taking a lot of effort on my part for this one. Maybe a few more listens will change my mind.

Track 10: The beginning of this song reminded me of the previous track, but it was clearly different. I like the edition of the snare rim tips here, as well as the bass entrance. It's rather nice and seems to set the indie mood. When the singing got here (and it took a good while, actually), I was reminded of Blue October again, but in a different way. I find this song to be incredibly repetitive. While this may not be necessarily a bad thing, I was expecting for something else to happen, and it never did. In that sense, I was slightly disappointed. Not too bad, though.

Track 11: The beginning is very different. The bongos came in, and suddenly there's this minimal beginning. I was excited to hear there were two singers for this one: one male, one female. This one seems more pop-ish to me than the others for some reason. This one is also softer than a lot of the previous tracks, and I appreciate this track for not fitting into the molds which the other songs seemed to set. I have this foreboding feeling that this group is a two-person collaboration between the male and female. Again, I can't say for sure. It's a nice track either way.

Track 12: Hello! More synths, but in a different context. The added dissonances within the intro give this song texture that would've otherwise been nonexistent. The singer here again sounds familiar, even though I don't have this voice in my library. Maybe this was during one of my many YouTube excursions. Ewww, I just heard that G go waaay sharp. Actually, he does this on all of the Gs, it seems, which is unfortunate. At least the poor guy tried. This is again one of those tracks where I really like the background music. The guy's voice isn't, per se, terrible. I've heard much worse. I think it could be better, however.

Track 13: I liked the waterfall effect in the beginning. It set the mood. I heard a lot of different accents that added to the musical context of the song, actually. It was rather pleasing to hear. I got even more excited when I realized the vocalist to this song is female. I got a bit of Oriental feel throughout the music, even though lyrically it's in English. The bass part in the song is quite catchy; I like it lots. I get the feeling that this band isn't from an English-speaking country; I'm not sure why. I'm probably wrong. :P

Track 14: Upon first listen, this song reminded me very much of The Killers, which is awesome. I detected a thick accent within the singing; I think it's Scottish. The background music (which vaguely reminded me of bagpipes) reinforces this assumption. This song is another one I REALLY like. I don't know, it has some sort of hidden quality that allows me to enjoy this a lot more than almost all the others. This is another track in which I can't wait for the revealing. :)

Track 15: The piano within this song is lovely simplicity. I love piano, and to hear it start off a song makes me happy. :wacky: OOOOOH, hello, lovely voice. I like this voice, too. It kinda reminds me of what I think Josh Groban would sound like if he weren't a trained operatic vocalist. Although I prefer Josh Groban to sing the way he does, I most certainly wouldn't mind if he sang this way on occasion. Maaan, this piano rockin' thing makes me happy. You know, I really like this one, too. This song is legit. As I get further into the song, the drumming starts to remind me more and more of what I would hear from Will Champion in some songs; "In My Place" specifically comes to mind. He proves near the end to have a lovely falsetto.

Overall, this mix is much better than I could ever expect it to be. I was afraid of getting a bad tape. After listening, I don't know why I worried so much. A lot of this music was softer in nature. I get the impression that either my mix partner prefers this stuff themselves, or they got the impression that I personally preferred it. Maybe it was even a bit of both. Either way, I love it. I highly recommend this mix to anyone else who wants to take a listen.

Thank you again to my lovely mix partner, whoever you are, and to Bryce for setting this up so I could listen to the wonders that I have just played through my ears.

I got my mixtape! I'll try to listen tomorrow, I'm kinda grounded and I shouldn't be on now :shame:

Duuuuude. That sucks. :\

yeah... I sent a PM to bryce to see if he can contact the person to get it straightened out... if not or it doesn't work, whatever... I'll just wait until the next time mixtape exchange comes up... no biggie.

violetsparks > that review was AWESOME, I feel ridiculous now...

(I think I guessed your Track 11 band :))
