Not sure if it counts as alternative or not (though it's especially catchy), but you should listen to Foo Fighters; especially their new-ish single "Wheels," which is only on their Greatest Hits CD or iTunes. Amazingly fantastic song though! Check it!

First off, I don't believe in labels. I am on record as saying that many times. BUT if I did, I would categorize most of these recommendations as Indie, not alternative. When I think of alternative music, I think of stuff ranging from the Smiths/Pixies/R.E.M. to Pearl Jam/Radiohead/Smashing Pumpkins.
