It is one of the most popular film franchises of all time.

And now the original Star Wars films could be given a modern make-over and converted into 3D.

Director George Lucas has hinted that the new advances in technology mean it is now a possibility to see all six films re-made.

article-0-00505A2D00000258-676_468x286.jpg Possible makeover? Star Wars Episode II stars Ewan McGregor (l) and Hayden Christensen could be on the big screen again in polished versions of the cult films

He said that he had initially thought of the idea after finishing the last Star Wars film, The Revenge of the Sith, in 2005.

But he was convinced about the idea after watching blockbuster Avatar, which picked up two Golden Globes last week.

Lucas said: 'We've been looking for years to do this but the technology hasn't been there. I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen.'

Avatar - which cost more than £300m to make - has shattered box-office records and is on the verge of taking £1billion at the box office since its release at Christmas.

Lucas added: 'I liked it. I make movies like that, so I can appreciate what James Cameron went through to do it. It worked well in 3D and I'm happy it's so successful.'

Lucas, 65, is currently shooting his latest film, Red Tails but is planning to begin work on converting the Star Wars films when he finishes later this year.

Since its release in 1977, the franchise has become a cult phenomenon, having grossed more than £2billion.

It is the third most popular film franchise of all time, behind James Bond and Harry Potter.

This isn't the first time Lucas has re-worked the original trilogy. The first three films alone went on to generate £1billion after they were re-released in 1997.

He spent more than £5 million on updating the films he shot in the 1970s and 80s and inserting scenes and characters with CGI technology.

Though they generated huge money at the box-office, many of the director's changes did not go down well with fans who moaned that it ruin the original series.

One fans said of the news that he would use 3D in the new versions of the films: 'Why? The prequels were terrible. The sad part is everyone paid to watch.'

The guy already has so much money it doesn't matter anymore, so I don't like Star Wars, I don't think he deserves billions, but I don't care.

He can throw as much money as he likes at them but since I've seen them all before it won't make me watch them again!

I love Star Wars, and in 3D I think it would be AWESOME! :D Please take Jar Jar Binks away, it was the worst caracter of all the movies!! lol

I'd much rather see "flesh and blood" characters than animated ones any day of the week................. :dozey:

*points at James Cameron*

This is *your* fault.

Gah... hasn't the man ruined them enough by never leaving them alone?

I saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in Imax 3D where they used that technology for the big scene at the end. It looked like a bunch of paper doll cutouts. It's not like the kind of 3D in Avatar at all.

Well, that one was absolute crap WITHOUT 3D, so it doesn't make much of a difference.

You, Cadet
Aww. :nice: Heh... you probably wouldn't like me so much if you had to spend time around me... always listening to all kinds of music you probably don't like and prattling on about Lord of the Rings and Star Wars and Doctor Who... :P

Well I really liked that scene until the fake 3d ruined it. :(
