I think you're making more out of Valentines than you should. You shouldn't be depressed that no one has decided to give you something on a day that's motivated purely by money, there's plenty of other things to be depressed about, choose one.

I decided to be a cheap bastard and make a woven leather bracelet for like $3 for my significant other. At least he can't complain about "consumerist bullshit" this way because it was CHEAP.

It's all a bit of harmless fun o_O You don't have to buy something expensive if you don't want to, you don't have to hide behind the consumerist bullshit thing either. You don't need a special day to appreciate all that goes on but you don't need to completely reject it either... it's a celebration of love ultimately and it's your choice to include the "consumerist bullshit" that goes along with it.

I guess what is important are the feelings involved, not necessarily the material gifts, etc.
