Band Help

Featured Replies

Ok, so my "band" is in need of serious help, we're probably in the worst possible situation a band could be in. I will say first, we're not even really a band, because we haven't practiced yet. One of our guitar players (who is one of my best friends, but he may not be for long at the rate he's going) is very lazy. We have no bassist, because our guitar player hates the only one who has been found. Our drummer goes to another school, but he's a very cooperative person, and talented too. The drummer and I gave the guitar player a choice, leave the band, or be in the band with the guy he hates. He just got really mad at us, and felt that what we did was mean. He has become very selfish recently. Should the drummer and I just start a new band with the bassist? I feel that would help everyone.

Thanks!

Form a new band. Hitlers are no fun, take it from someone with loads of experience.

Believe me, he is not like Hendrix. XD I feel not being in a band with him is the only way he and I could be friends, anyways.

You could have a 3 man band as well. A second guitarist is no requirement.

@Heatseeker, very true. @Technicolor Liver. I know. At our school, there's no shortage. Practically expendable. That gives freedom to be as pickey as we want.

Have open try-outs. I wish I had that luxury. My band has desperately taken who we could get, fortunately it worked out that the last 4 bandless musicians in our school all happen to be really good.

This is pretty funny. In my band we used to have a bass player that we kicked out because after 2 months, I wanted to beat the shit out of him lol One of the greatest bass players I'v ever seen, but I just couldn't take his damn attitude anymore. So we have a new bass player that is pretty good and works good with the other band members.

What I'm trying to say is that you should go with who ever is the most committed and everyone gets alone with. And yes, about everyone these days knows how to play guitar ;)

Bands are complicated. Your best friend doesn't always make the best band mate, and I assure you controlling types will make you miserable. If it isn't working go elsewhere. Guitar players are a dime a dozen. If you have two guitar players one can convert to bass and you can get by with that (yes, I know playing bass isn't like guitar BUT it is a way to get started).

It is ok to find people with different styles as long as those styles can mesh. Sometimes it is good to have contrasting taste but there has to be compromise with it. Good luck.

Noooo! Never ever do that! it's not the same! If you do that your guitar player will get bored of the bass because he/she doesn't feel the instrument. It's better to start without bass player than do that, or you will end up with music with no bass at all. I think you shoul start a new band... just try!

I suppose you are the singer?

I play bass btw...

A band is a cooperative thing, and while he is one of your close friends, you'd be better off forming a new band. Have you tried telling him how you feel about the situation?

said the guy who just started playing the bass;)

not a good idea anyway.

btt:

there are so many guitarists, and you will easily find another one that will get along with your bassist...

there's no room for too selfish people

People that won't do their best for the band: Get rid of those!:)

Guitar players that likes to pick up the bass: Kill them! :laugh3:

You don't find on the right place in that band: Find something else.

Your drummer suck but your guitarist is very good: Get a better drummer and worse guitarist.

Drums, Percussion, base, other rhythm are the most important things you need.. when you listen to a song, the first thing your brain notice are the rhythm instruments.

The rhythm must be as good as possible and guitars are using that rhythm to know what too play.

Drummer with a poor feel: Get rid of them.

Guitarist with an HUGE ego: Get rid of them.

Bassists that are bad at ballets: Get rid of them.

Singers that think screaming is very cool: Get rid of them.

Musicians that only plays because it's cool to do: Get rid of them.

Musicians that do their best for the band but arn't very good: Let them join the band!

Musicians that can't play well but know how to use their heart in music: Let them join the band!

or you could just do like my band and find some great blokes who love playing and couldn't be more cooperative who also just happen to be basically prodigies at their instruments.

Well, sort of. We have 2 guitarists (we take turns on rhythm/lead). I also play keyboards in this band. We have all of the members (except the drummer, he can't sing while drumming) contribute to lead vocals. We all have good voices, so yeah. And to everyone: Thanks! I told the guitar player we are on "indefinite hiatus." The drummer, that bassist, and I are starting a new band with a more talented/commited guitar player. It will help my friendship, too.

When you don't have a bassist yet, you can use keys to play the rhythm part instead of the bass.

Well...fair enough then. I guess to each his own. Our bass player switched to bass because he was bored with guitar and everyone plays guitar anyways. He is probably one of the most talented bass players out there. I switched to keyboards and synths from guitar because I was average at best playing guitar, and I soon found it more satisfying playing an instrument that was not so popular. I guess its all in the individual.

:embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

Well it's what I think.... and I'm a girl.

Thanks for the help everyone! Now I just need to wait for my drummer to get over his flu and sinus/ear infection.
