Here's Why They Can't Plug That Gulf Oil Leak

Featured Replies

This whole thing is getting more and more depressing by the day. Those poor animals. More of them, dying because of human stupidity and ignorance.

^I know. It kills me that the animals are getting so hurt from something our fault.

They really should do more, it's a horrific waste of oil, plus it has a disasterous effect on animals and the shorelines where it washes up.

It keeps getting worse. Now the oil is heading towards my state(Florida)

Toward my favorite beach and a really awesome place.

^she is such an idiot... who. sounds. like. she. is. always. reading. off. of. a. card.

I don't watch her, nor msnbc... but someone posted this online which I thought was interesting since it seems like it's once again history repeating itself.

Now the saw that they were using to cut the well got stuck. Lovely.

"Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen is saying that a saw has become stuck as it was cutting through a pipe on a busted well, stalling the latest attempt to contain the Gulf oil gusher. Allen said Wednesday the goal is to free the saw and finish the cut later in the day."

Any news on the off shore drilling bill? Every article I pull up seems to be from the beginning of May and basically says the chances of it getting pasted are slim to none.

:bigcry:

Do you live near any of the coasts?

Not that this really relates to the topic, but I found it interesting in that article when they were talking about Florida's tourism industry, they mentioned that Florida does not have any income taxes. I didn't know that.

Yes I do

I've told some people on this board I'm from Orlando but I actually live in a town about one hour east of Orlando and about ten minutes from the beautiful sea.

The public's reaction to this is anything but rational.

I'm not sure if anyone remembers, but very recently there was arguably an even worse environmental disaster:

Yes, that volcano Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland.

The whole discussion about this today seems to be implying BP did this on purpose. Or that if only Obama had more money and power, he could fix the problem.

1. It was an accident. Sometimes people you love die in car accidents. You don't go on a rampage and blame everything in sight.

2. Yes, we'd all love to have cars powered by sunshine and joy. At this point that's just not feasible. And no, shoveling more money into that particular area of research isn't going to help - scientists and inventors aren't slot machines.

3. Even a government as powerful as Nazi Germany's Third Reich couldn't plug this oil leak. So shut up about increasing taxes, and get a boat and go out there and scoop up some of that oil your own damn self.

How are you going to compare a volcano to a human caused oil spill?

And this is one big fucking accident..

Yeah, man-made disasters are a bit more despicable than natural disasters

The problem I have is that there have been so many oil spills in the past that these oil companies should have a better plan of attack in case something like this happens. As you can see from that maddow video they are using the same tactics they did decades ago, and not did those fail but also it was in so much more shallower water.

I think this should be a wake up call to the people to let them see how we need to eventually get off oil (there's not an unlimited supply), but more importantly be more environmentally conscience. I'm not talking about global temperature changes (cooling/warming), but even picking up garage. We should treat the planet with respect because it is our home, and there is no other place for us to go.

Not sure I understand why. Isn't man a part of nature?

My whole point is that we need to quit this self-flagellation and actually offer ideas and help.

BP is clearly negligent here, and they should be required to pay property damages. But this isn't any one person's fault. Pay attention to what's destructive criticism, and what's constructive criticism.

^Oh right, I was just about to get in my dinghy, take your advice and start scooping up the oil.

Can't you possibly make an opinion without being so sensationalist? It just leads to the inevitable back tracking.

Thinking far outside the box, and way off into the stupid bin, but... jamming a few truckloads of cornstarch down the hole couldn't hurt. And it's natural.

It's 2/3rds the size of New Zealand. Holy shit

But New Zealand is just a speck.

How about this:

They just bury the pipe using humungous boulders?

It sounds stupid but think of it... its natural and its possible :P

^ Cornstarch and boulders, we're on a roll here. Much better than chemical dispersant and golf balls.
