Your family's taste in music...

Featured Replies

Does your family have a similar taste in music, or do you all listen to completely different music?

I was just thinking about what my family members listen to and how different our tastes in music are, and I'm curious to know what it's like for everyone else.

I have three brothers. The oldest one mostly listens to rap and kind of screamo-ish rock music. I don't know what bands he likes, but whatever he listens to, I really can't stand it.

My second youngest brother listens to bands like Nirvana, Metallica, Muse, Pearl Jam, etc.

My youngest brother doesn't listen to any music, I don't think. :P

My dad likes bluegrass and Pink Floyd, and I don't know what my mom likes because she never really listens to any music as far as I know.

And, well, I don't know how to describe my taste so I'll just copy and paste what it says on my last.fm: I'm into indie, alternative, folk, rock and experimental. :|

Anyway, that pretty much describes my family's taste in music. We're all pretty different and I'd say that none of us particularly like what anyone else in the family likes.

So what's it like for you guys?

My mom likes 60's and 80's music, Rolling Stones, Beatles, etc.

And Muse, now that she saw them live.

My dad likes a bit of the stuff that I listen to, but he really likes Pink Floyd, The Eagles, and classical music

My older brother only listens to classical and jazz.

So yeah, I'm pretty much alone. :shifty:

My elder brother listens to local stuffs.

My first sister listens to Asian pop music, like those from Japan, Hong Kong and Korea.

My second sister listens mostly to Secondhand Serenade, Owl City and Avenged Sevenfold.

My parents listen to everything. :|

My brother listens to post-rock and metal-ish (?) bands like Tool, NIN and Hella. We sometimes exchange music. He introduced me to Godspeed You! Black Emperor and I introduced him to Sigur Rós, for example. :nice:

My father and I have really similar tastes in music. We both like Radiohead, Johnny Cash, Arcade Fire, Editors, Joy Division, The Smashing Pumpkins, Portishead, Deerhunter, The Black Keys, etc. Usually I introduce him to new music (I've been advocating The National a lot lately), but sometimes it's the other way around (for instance, he introduced me to Bon Iver when he wasn't known at all).

My mother has pretty decent taste in music as well, although she's not really that into discovering new music. She owns OK Computer, which is pretty awesome because for a long time I didn't even know she liked Radiohead. I guess she listens to 70s/80s music mostly and some new stuff I've introduced her to (like Damien Rice, Amy McDonald and even Sigur Rós).

similar to braddock's thread few time ago.

my mom listened to ballads, mellow music, folk music from the area, all in spanish, or 60's 70's from italy, france, but not so often.

my dad listen to rock, classical, alternative, 60's, 70's.

my cousins and friends listen mainstream pop or rap.. some listen to metal, none experimental.

I pretty much owe my taste in music to my parents in some way or another. That makes my younger sister the odd one out who listens to Twilight OST's and Taylor Swift.

But my parents like pretty much everything I buy, but don't always agree.

Not even close to mine. They just listen to whatever is on the radio.

I'm the only one who's really cared for music so much in my family.

My brother listens to pretty much the same bands as me: Muse, The Killers, Radiohead, Keane, Arcade Fire etc.

While my dad listens to classic rock and 80's bands like Pink Floyd, Beatles, Queen, Rolling Stones etc.

And my mum listens to crap. With the exception of a couple of bands like Muse and The Killers.

My brother listens to local music and David Guetta and that kid of music.

My mum listens to everything from local terrible music to Sting.

And my dad listens to everything I do (expect Coldplay).

Not even close to mine. They just listen to whatever is on the radio.

I'm the only one who's really cared for music so much in my family.

This exactly. Seriously.

My mom and dad's taste in music is exactly the same. They love oldies. That's basically it.

My older younger brother mainly listens to singles that are on the Top 40 radio station. He loves "Evacuate the Dance Floor."

My younger younger brother has actually started getting albums, which is cool. He mainly listens to country and hip-hop on the radio.

I'm the only person who has a broad music taste. I like a lot of things. Everyone else pretty much thinks most of my music is garbage, which is sad.

My dad likes a lot of good bands. He got me into music in the first place! He likes Arcade Fire, The National, Sufjan Stevens and other cool bands a lot!

My mum likes whatever I play her that's nice... haha, she's liked Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens and some others

My brother is weird. He likes experimental music, punk, electronic and hip hop :surprised: He's gotten me into a lot of cool bands. Without him I would still think Kanye was an idiot and made crap music!

Mum: Loves Muse, George Michael, Bob Dylan

Dad: Paul McCartney, The Beatles, Elton John, Status Quo, Divine Comedy, Penguin Cafe (it's a long list)

Brothers: 1) Oldest brother was a DJ and he only listens to house/garage and dance stuff

2) Likes London rap and hardcore bands

My dad and I listen to similar things, but since my dad's 40 years older than me, his includes a bit more motown than mine does. :P

My sister and I don't agree on music, almost at all. With our favorite artists we're almost completely opposite. She loves Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, that shit. I... don't. As you can tell.

My brother says "he doesn't have time for music" which is like a knife through the heart.

EWWW, Jessica Simpson. D:

How in the world do you "not have time" for music? That's just inconceivable in my mind. Granted, I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to music, so I'm biased. But still. :freak:

My mom likes stuff like Prince, Queen and Neil Young.

My little sister has no interest in music. :blank:

But my big sister has actually nice music taste. I've noticed she has Mew, Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand in her music library. :surprised:

Most of my family likes country and oldies. :|

My cousin likes Coldplay, Miike Snow, Kings of Leon and William Fitzsimmons though. :nice:

My cousin loves Hollywood Undead.

But she also likes Coldplay, Muse, and The Killers (mainly because I told her we weren't related if she didn't listen to those bands.)

My brother listens to quite a few punk bands like You me at six etc. he sometimes borrows my CD's, at the moment I think he likes the killers and snow patrol.

My mum has a lot of Morrissey and Paul Weller CD's, she's into a lot of 80's music.

My dad has quite wide range he listens to a lot of Fleetwood mac and the eagles, he also likes ABBA, meatloaf and a lot of ballad type songs

my brother likes a lot of bands, from arcade fire, the national, pearl jam, coldplay, the smiths to sick of it all, hatebreed, isis, mono, explosions in the sky ...

my dad listened croatian local music, nowadays he isn't really interested in music but he likes to hear a good rock song ... his favourite are cast no shadow by oasis and bittersweet symphony by the verve!

I'm more into the "soft" rock music I guess you would call it (Coldplay, Snow Patrol), indie, alternative, pop (depending on who it is :P)...that kind of thing. And jazz and classical, too.

My dad likes James Taylor, certain movie scores, kids music (), and I don't really know what else.

My mom likes Jann Arden and basically anyone off those "Women and Songs" cds.

And my twin sister likes Sarah Mclachlan, Michael Buble and basically poppy kind of stuff. I can sometimes force her to listen to the music I like, though. She likes Coldplay, just in moderation.

My mom listens to Michael Buble, Take that, The Script and Paolo Nutini, things like that.

My dad's taste doesn't differ that much, he likes some of the old crooners too.

I'm not too sure of my sister's music taste, she went to see went to see bloc party and biffy clyro. She liked mgmt too.

My younger brother is obsessed with the gorillaz and likes other artists like Florence and the machine and coldplay.

Both of my parents like Barbara Streisand (one of the reasons they bonded as friends). They also like KD Lang (which I don't mind too much...), Enya, and some classical music. Oh, yeah, and musicals (which is good, 'cos I like 'em too :D). They don't mind more current stuff, like Coldplay, Snow Patrol and all that, but it's not on their regular list of listening.

My dad also likes Gregorian chants/choral stuff, Al Stewart (he had a minor hit with a song called 'Year of the Cat', and his music is really weird... he writes all of this historical rock music. Like, he does an album called 'Between the Wars' which is about all of these stories that he's written to music between the two world wars... it's very odd).

My mom loves Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits and other old stuff like that. She also listens to Kashmir, and a couple of days ago I found out she was listening to She Spider by Mew on repeat :blank:

I don't really know what my dad listens to, but he somehow managed to get me into The Clash and David Bowie when I was little.
