Easter eggs cost up to 140% more this year, thanks to the soaring price of chocolate

Easter eggs cost up to 140 per cent more this year, thanks to the soaring price of chocolate.

On average, buyers must pay 21 per cent more for treats compared to last year, with favourite brands carrying staggering price tags.

A 324g Galaxy Minstrels Egg is up from £2.50 to £6 – a 140 per cent increase - while Cadbury’s Twirl eggs and Dairy Milk eggs have risen from £3.35 to £5.50 – a 64 per cent hike.

And a Galaxy All Block Collection Egg, comprised of a hollow egg and three chocolate bars, costs an astonishing £10 - £1.26 more than last year.

One reason for the price hikes is political unrest in the Ivory Coast, the world’s biggest supplier of cocoa.

Higher production costs and the VAT increase from 17.4 per cent to 20 per cent earlier this year are also factors.

Richard Dodd, from the British Retail Consortium, said: ‘A whole range of world commodities and production costs are considerably more expensive, and inevitably some of those increases are filtering through.

‘Sugar and cocoa used in Easter eggs are amongst the commodities that have seen their costs go up. We can put these increases down to rising world demand relative to supply.

‘Having said that, there are plenty of supermarkets providing the option of cheap Easter eggs and treats, so I would encourage people to be aware of these options before buying.’

The Federation of Cocoa Commerce said unrest in the Ivory Coast, which exported 1.2m tonnes of cocoa last year, would affect the cost of cocoa.

After a disputed November election plunged the once-booming West African country into violence, cocoa prices rocketed to their highest levels in more than 30 years, the federation said.

Analysts agreed this lack of cocoa would drive up the price of chocolate.

Mr Dodd added: ‘Supply is a key factor to cost. If there is less of an item, it leads to heightened demand and shops can price accordingly.’

Dalia Mays, from shopping website mySupermarket, which compiled the research, said: ‘With Easter just around the corner and prices on the up, chocolate lovers need to watch out they don’t get ripped off.’

I have to try

I thought chocolate eggs were cheaper this year. My sister bought a few of them for €1.50 each.

I have never looked at the price of easter eggs before so I don't know what to compare that to but that's pretty cheap.

If the eggs y'all are talking about are the size of the one in the picture in the first post, then that's a pretty good price for them. :P

Me thinks this, and I remember Easter used to actually be a bit expensive, then the prices of easter eggs seemed to drop dramatically over the past 5 years. Maybe instead of the 'soaring price' of chocolate it's just a return to normality?

I remember getting a Cream Egg Easter egg as a child one Easter and half expecting the big egg to be filled with cream to make one MEGA cream egg! But no.

^Hahaha I had the same thought, absolutely gutted as a child, but in retrospect, I'd probably be filled with facial holes from acne if that was the reality.

I dont waste time with little eggs, I go straight for the big solid chocolate bunnies !
