Have you ever stopped listening to something because of someone else?

Featured Replies

As I was reading through Alexa's thread about emotional attachment to music you don't listen to anymore, I was actually reminded of something different. My ex-best friend became my best friend through a specific artist, and due to a lot of things, we pretty much don't talk to each other anymore. We aren't friends of any sort. Because of that, it's hard for me to listen to them, and I haven't in a long time.

Has this sort of thing ever happened to you? Have you ever had music-a song, an album, an artist-that reminded you of someone else, but had that relationship fall apart, causing you to not want to listen to it anymore?

I listen to music because of another person but i have never stopped listening to something because of someone.

I've never stopped because of a person, but I used to have a friend that I lost keeping in touch with because I felt he was taking too much advantage of others. Anyway there was like 2 artists he really liked that I showed him. But I never listen to them now. It's not because of him, but because I lost interest in those artists.

definitely not!

Yeah, Coldplay thanks to the forum in part (no offense), other part cos of Chris Martin.

Arcade Fire too.

Um.. what else..

BRITNEY SPEARS. Haha jk. No.

Nothing else I can remember.

Edit: I used to love some popular dance song (yeah, shame on me) around last year when I met someone, after that person hurt me like no one else did, I don't seem to be able to listen to that song anymore.

I never started to listen to radiohead because a friend liked them a lot and she was such a big music snob it was actually annoying.

But then I listened to In Rainbows and I didn't like it so I wasn't missing anything really :P

Oh and the blind coldplay fangirls make me hate coldplay sometimes too but I know I'll listen to them again when they release some new stuff, plus is lovely to listen to Parachutes once in a while

I dunno, kind of, some songs I associate so strongly with certain feelings I make myself not listen to them except on certain occasions, so I guess so.

for a while I wouldn't listen to classical piano because the guy I like is so good at it and it made me depressed :blank: but then I went back to it.

has anyones parents ever stopped them from listening to a certain artist or band?

I don't think so. I'll listen to music that other people recommend but don't really let them or their opinions affect my own.

Edit: that was in response to violet's question :P

In response to yours Jamie, no

My parents disapproved of some music I listened to when I lived at home, but they could/would never actually stop me from listening to what I wanted to listen to.

Yes, because one band and one person come to my mind

Vampire Weekend

I had a friend who wasn't honest...she was bitch....and she introduced me to VW when they released their first album....I do exactly remember talking to her about their music and stuff and now I dislike the band as much as I dislike her

I think some people are misinterpreting my question. Let me clarify something. I didn't mean "stop listening" as in actually disliking a band. That in itself is completely different. I mean literally just not listening to something anymore.

With my situation, it's not as if I hate the artist. I actually still value them because I think they're good musicians. It's just that I get reminded of her when I listen to them, and because of who she really is, I don't want to be reminded of her, and that's why I stopped. Hopefully, that makes more sense.

in short, no.

it sure will bring memories, but as the song is good and memories are good is ok.

another matter is how i dealt with mom's discography, i've been not able to listen to it for the first 3 years or so cause it made me depressed, now i'm ok, sure it brings memories, but worst i can do is delete the mp3s or sell the cds, is like if i'd do so, i'm finally separating her from me forever.

oh my god yes :|

after John left RHCP i didn't listen to them for well over a year, at all! but then i slowly starting listening again and remembered why i love them so much. i had a similar reaction when The White Stripes broke up but i got over that rather quickly.

Crests that actually gave me a headache from looking at that. :|

And yes, that happened to me for a lot of oldies bands.

I unconsciously stopped listening to Weird Al after getting out of an abusive relationship that I was forced into in grade 6 because that was what I always listened to around that time.

I tried listening to him again a couple years ago and almost threw up after like a few seconds. :|

My mum doesn't want me to listen to The King Of Limbs, cause it annoys her (when she's near). :S She says that it's too much psychadelic. But I'm not giving up. I love TKOL! :smug:
