Music hates itself.

Featured Replies

yeah i'm a big fan of no frills live shows. big reason why i love pearl jam so much.

Presumably they don't rely on gimmicks and costumes, either.;)

i should explain why i've created this thread.

i've really only been "into" music for about 3 or 4yrs now and i've come to realise that the industry seems to be destroying itself from the inside. by the industry i mean for the most part music fans. what gets the most amount attention? hatred. you say that you hate coldplay for being pompous pricks and everyone is ready to put you up on some pedestal. you say that you hate kings of leon for being up some labels arse and you're suddenly some hero. does anything get people more riled up than the term "sell out"?

music has turned itself into image driven gimmick laden trigger happy machine. we're seemingly incapable of appreciating music for what it is instead we're too busy arguing who has become too "commercial" or why is that popstar covering that awesome indie song, i can't listen to it anymore cos so n so sang it etc etc.

i know i'm generalising a fair bit here but that seems to be the vibe that is saturating the industry at the moment. this forum may not be guilty of any of the things i've mentioned but it is inexplicably preoccupied with fighting over why one band is better than another. people seem to be completely incapable of getting it into their heads that there is no such thing as one artist being better than another. we all seem to enjoy hating other music more than appreciating and loving our own favourites.

i know for a fact that i'm guilty of a lot of things i'm alleging others of. it really does bring down this beautiful art form. i hope my little rant in some way explains what i'm getting at.

I agree with this 100%

yeah, people should care about what they like instead of spending all their time talking shit about the rest of the music, like trying to change it or hatever, it's just lame. Criticism it's good but why not spending your time talking about something you like instead?. I mean, I don't like Bieber but I know I'm not the target audience for his music so why should I waste my precious time talking shit about him?, good for him if he can still make money making music

I think it's awesome to have so many genres to choose, I mean the older people only had the radio stuff available and maybe a few albums.

the decentralisation of music is a really awesome thing. it's just a shame that many music fans haven't been very accepting of it.

Whilst they have been very accepting of mediocrity and sub standard music driven by image.

That's extremely sad.:(

After reading the title, I expected a parody topic in which music gives itself a Pitchfork review. Though this is a quality discussion as it is. :)

You know, for as many people who say "Everything on the radio sucks!", they should be thankful they suddenly have non-radio options open to them. (non-local, of course) Thanks to the Internet, you can now create radio stations that cater exclusively to your taste, and with so many newer cars being included with digital music support, you have that option on-the-go as well.

Whether standard radio is dying is another topic, of course. I guess I'm a little guilty of thinking strictly within my elitism sometimes. For example, I listened to Linkin Park in middle school. I now hate Linkin Park and will mock them whenever the opportunity arises. That doesn't change the fact that I did listen to them at one point, though. Everyone's taste changes over time.

Everyone's taste changes over time.

Which is why people usually grow out of things like Gaga and Bieber.

I dunno, I used to hate Lady Gaga just because I couldn't look past the showiness and silly costuming, and so on, and then I discovered I actually liked some of her music as music, and then I that I actually liked her as a person past that too (she's actually quite smart and kind if you watch an in-depth interview). I don't feel like the trouble with music is with the image of one camp over another, but like has been mentioned, of the elitism/rejection within each camp.

but don't you think a lot of that segregation is based on image?

but don't you think a lot of that segregation is based on image?

Well yeah, but why do we need to reject the image of each camp? Or rather, target one camp over another. I suppose if each image was rejected equally it'd be okay

edit: btw that parody pitchfork review is actually mildly funny, one of about 2 times the Onion has made me smile, haha.

But you can't exactly say all the camps should have the same image. It just defeats the purpose. I don't think rejection is necessary, or at least public objection, but rather if we all just accept that people like different music for different reasons, whether that because of their culture, age, sex, etc, then no problems would really arise. People who feel the need to criticise others music obviously feel some insecurity with the music they listen to otherwise they wouldn't bother. If instead of criticising, we gently opened peoples eyes to other sorts of music, if they are willing, then that would be a better way to go about it.

Well I wasn't proposing that at all, I hope you don't think I was! Basically I think we're in complete agreement actually.

No, not saying at all that you proposed it! Just that was my view on the subject at hand, and it seems we are in complete agreement.

i found myself thinking about this discussion at work today and i kinda came to realisation that part of the fun of being a music fan is getting into these heated debates about why one band is better than another. in most cases it only increases your passion for the music you already like and theres a slight chance you might give the other side a go.

and it's kinda nice to see people being passion about music, regardless of what genre it is. it flies in the face of people who think that music isn't significant or doesn't evoke the emotion as it used to be.

so as much as i wish things were different. things are kinda alright the way they are now.

i would love to know what people think of what lupe fiasco has gone through this year. for those of you who don't know the story basically his record label told him he had to make music of a certain type, that being the type that will appeal to the mainstream. this naturally didn't sit well with lupe who has a strong indie following but he had no choice. in "promoting" the album he confessed several times that doesn't like a lot of the album. is this just lupe jumping the gun to dodge criticism for a poor showing or is he just the victim of a desperate record label?

I don't like putting that much thought into music. To me, it's supposed to be fun and enjoyable, not an academic exercise.

or is he just the victim of a desperate record label?

This.

That's why musicians are better off going it alone nowadays. At least they can do what they want.;)
