Well I'm a grammar nazi myself. I think it's important to write well, in whatever language you are writing. Of course if it is not your mother tongue you are more likely to make mistakes but still you should try to write as well as you can. It's not about being a perfectionist, it's about using what you have learned and not making yourself look dumb.

So I correct other people and I'm grateful when people correct me so that I don't make the same mistake again.

(That said if there any mistakes in this post please feel free to correct me. :P)

GRAMMAR =/= SPELLING

LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BEFORE YOU FAILJOKE

It makes everyone on the forum a sad panda! Sad pandas are depressing and they pout. You do not wish this?

It's ironic because in itself confusing grammar as spelling is a syntax error.

I never understood fellow non-English speakers who are so touchy about the whole "I DIDN'T GO TO AN ENGLISH SPEAKING SCHOOL" thing. Yeah, we didn't go to English speaking schools - but why should this exclude us from talking like idiots? There isn't a different standard for you just because it's not your first language.

English is my third language and I love it when I am corrected on things because it keeps me on my toes and it makes me learn. Simply saying "FUCK YOU I DIDN'T LEARN ENGLISH AT SCHOOL" whenever I'm corrected isn't a good practice to get into - because if I keep doing that how am I ever going to strive to be better?

Destrokk the only person making you feel dumb by highlighting your mistakes is yourself. It is you who allow yourself to feel that way.

If someone is acting like a dick and being ridiculously anal about your English, just laugh it off. Who cares? I think you'll find life will be a lot easier if you start thinking that way instead of the way you react now.

English is a frustrating language and I'm still not fluent in it. I feel you, trust me. I just think it would be best if you stop believing you're above criticism. No one is.

I think you're fluent. :shocked2:

I'm not fluent. Fluency, for me, is the feeling of complete freedom within a language. The feeling like you can express any feeling or any emotion instantaneously and in a carefree way. The language is almost an extension of your own thoughts and there is no delay. I can't do that with English, but I can with Arabic and I can with French. So I don't call myself fluent.

I can't do that in any language :(

I am so easily frustrated by not being able to express exactly what I mean. Maybe I am expecting too much of language. Even if I would have been able to say exactly what I mean, then it’s still questionable if the receiver also understood it exactly like that.

Agreed. A dumb person is not someone who doesn't know something is someone who is not willing to learn.

I get you, I think even if you are fluent this can happen with any language that is not your mother tongue.

A bit off topic but your post made me remember a quote I got to know in a translation's class:

"Translation is the art of revelation. It makes the unknown known. The translator artist has the fever and craft to recognize, re-create, and reveal the work of another artist. But even when famous at home, the work comes into an aliens city as an orphan with no past to its readers."
