Hi!

hehe I think you did a much better job with the mixtape then when I made one for you!

I meant to ask you about the names - so is Andrianjaka a completely made up name? 'Cos I was Googling it to try and find clues to who the mixtape maker was :laugh3:

I'm definitely going to check some more music out from here, so thankyou again! :D

<3

I did the "your debut album" game

http://presurfer.blogspot.com/2008/10/your-debut-album.html

Andrianjaka isn't a made up name - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrianjaka some old ruler of an area of Madagascar

Hey, I'm Emily your mixtape maker! :nice:

I'm glad you liked the tape. You're right, I do tend to gravitate towards more mellow kind of stuff...usually male voices. And I loooveee slow songs, but I tried to add some more upbeat stuff too. :P

So I'll put some comments in yellow!

Hi there...

finally its' time for my review:D

I really liked the tape!

You did at pretty good job with making the tracks work together and i really like the name "Melodies Underneath Me"<3

I like you'r taste in music.. it's very ( I feel like I used this word a lot while reviewing this tape ) mellow and the tape has a light feeling to it :)

Okay, let's start with the track's then...

Track 1

The National? Sounds a little bit like them, I don't know this song though.....

It's nice, calm and soothing , very mellow:P A good opening track

You got it, it's The National. This one is called England. It is really nice and soothing - I love it on rainy days.

Track 2

I like this one too:) Its also a kind of mellow track and (to quote my mixtapepartner a-chan) it's very easy to the ear and radio friendly! sorry but it just really fit :P

Yeah I suppose this one is pretty radio friendly. I've never heard it on the radio but my town only has crap stations that only play Top 40 hits. :P I was wondering if you would have heard it before but I guess you haven't. It's Biffy Clyro with Many of Horror.

Track 3

Guess it a nice track, but it's a bit to "sweet" for my taste.... it sounds like she's singing about strawberries and butterflies:sick2:

Okay its not that bad, its actually a quite good, just not mu cup of tea:\

EDIT: it's growing on me, but it's still not really my kind of music......

No worries, it's not for everyone. This is Regina Spektor. In hindsight, I wish I would have chosen a different song of hers. I don't remember what made me choose this one instead.

Track 4

Ooooo...... I like the rhythms at the start, catchy:dance:

She sounds so familiar, but I just can't place her. she's god a cool voice and her own sound which i like a lot :)

Little Bit by Lykke Li. I've really been loving her lately. You've maybe heard I Follow Rivers from her...I think it's been pretty popular on tv shows and stuff. But yeah her voice is really cool and her songs always have cool rhythms.

Track 5

Again very mellow:P

It's a nice song and i like the guitar that comes and goes and the guy's clear voice......

This one is called Before I'm Old and the band is Fictionist. Funny story about this song - I was downloading a bunch of music at once and accidentally labelled this one as Howlin for You by The Black Keys, who are playing in a city near me this summer. I love this song, so I was kicking myself for not having tickets until I realized my mistake. It turns out I'm not a huge fan of Howlin for You, so now I don't mind that I don't have tickets.:P

Track 6

Now I know I'v heard this before:freak:..... but I obviously don't know who ever plays this enough to recognize it so I'm really glad you put it on here :DI'm really looking forward to find out who this is!!!!!!!!!

I like the lyrics and the feeling behind it.... I'm pretty sure the title of the song is something like "Love Is A Song" or "Love Is A Symphony"

Ahhhhh I love this song!! You were close, it's Your Love is a Song by Switchfoot. I'm going through an obsession with this song at the moment. It's so gorgeous.

Track 7

November Was White, December Was Grey by Say Hi:dazzled:

I really like this song and I got so happy when I first heard it on your tape :) I actually listend to this alot last winter while waiting for the spring :P I'm guessing you'r a big fan of the mellow sound with the soothing male voice!

I first heard this one on Gossip Girl and loved it right away. I would also recommend their song Sweet Sweet Heartkiller if you haven't heard it.

Track 8

Should I know this song? It sounds kind of mainstreamy.... like something they play over and over again on the radio:rolleyes5:

I like her and she's got a nice edge to her voice but I'm not a big fan of the song itself.... sorry:toilet:

Lights by Ellie Goulding. I had a feeling you might know this one as she's been gaining popularity lately. I've never heard her on the radio here but I wondered if you had heard it more often. Ah well, it's not for everyone!

Track 9

I really the opening with the piano and how he starts to sing with a touch of monotoneness ( that not a word is it?.... monotoneness?.... nope probably not but I think it should be ) and the way i develops to the chorus ....

I like the sound of this :cheesy:

This is You Still Love Him by White Lies. I noticed that you didn't have any White Lies on your lastfm so I knew I had to include it! They're fantastic - you have to check them out.

Track 10

It stats off kind of dull but it get more interesting.... Its a really cute song and i like the easy nature of the song:pleased:

But that being said this song wasn't really anything more than that for me :whaaat:

I have a weird obsession with this song because it fits perfectly with a book I was reading at the time I first heard the song. I really love the lyrics. Anyway it's Calendar Girl by Stars.

Track 11

Wow he's got a special voice.... I really like it though!

He knows exactly how to use it to make it sound cool.... i'm tapping my foot :D that's a good thing right? I like the instruments in the back:wacky:

--mellow :P

Where to Start by Tommy and the High Pilots. I like his voice too. And the instrumentals are gorgeous.

Track 12

____,,____

Don't know why but at once the song started playing I felt like I was on a sailboat out at sea a calm and sunny day :nice:

This song has a very relaxed nature and the male singer has as soothing voice<3

I Adore You by Melpo Mene. I loovee this song. You're right, it is very sailboat-y and ocean-y. You have to check out the video, it's really lovely.

Track 13

I LIKE IT <3

i really do i just don't really know how to review it:P

good song........

Foster the People! Their first album was just released. They're fantastic.

Track 14

Whistling  Sounds kind of retro but it's probably just made that way!

I really like the chorus ! It's cheerful in a good way (dos it make me a depressing person to think that cheerful isn't always good?) :P

After I heard this song the word pumpkinpie got stuck in my head XD lol

Anyways I gonna take a wild guess and say that the name of this song is something along the lines of "Let Me Go Home" or maybe just "Home" :surprised:

Yep, it's Home. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Such a cute song.

Track 15

<3 Love his dark and mysterious voice........

Hmmm.... when i got the the chorus this song started to sound damn familiar!!!!

Grrrrrr:veryangry2: dont you just hate that? It right here on the tip of my tongue....

well, well i like it a lot, its got a kind of edgy sound to it and the way it fades away makes it a really good closing track :)

O Children by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. To be honest I haven't heard much else from him, but I love this song so I figured I would include it. I bet I know why it's familiar...they played it during Harry and Hermione's dance scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. If you saw the movie you probably would recognize it. :P I'm a massive Potter nerd...soo...

I'm looking forward to see who the artist's are:mellow:

So I'm glad you liked it, and I hope you will want to check out some stuff from some of the artists. :nice:

Here's the tracklisting:

(And I'm sorry that it was a .rar file...my laptop was being a jerk and wouldn't upload the zip file.)

OK so now that I finally have a mixtape (thank you very much to the person who made it), like Bryce, I'm going to take my time a bit in writing a review. I've already got a bit of an idea who made it ;)

I'm about halfway through my first listen and I'm really enjoying it though :awesome:

aha. Sorry about all the instrumentals. I've been pretty much listening to only instrumentals recently :uhoh:

Don't worry about the rap. I put some in because I knew you hadn't heard much/don't like it. I understand why you wouldn't like it :P

Mix MP3 Review

55 minutes of music in one handy mp3 file.

yup. thought you'd like that

1 - I have no idea what the band or song is, sounds good though

This is Connan Mockasin. A New Zealander who has recently been getting a bit of attention in the UK. Thought it was a good start.

2 - Another good song which I don't know, the voice seems familiar from somewhere.

Never Stops - Deerhunter. One of my favourites.

3 - Another track which I don't know sounds a bit like jay-z style rapping.

3.214 - Madvillain. A collaboration between my favourite rapper and a very weird producer, Madlib. Don't really see the Jay-Z comparison but okay :P

4 - Kayne West? Way too sweary for my tastes, sorry it's rubbish.

Haha, this was a risky one. Orange Juice - OFWGKTA. They're huge atm.

5 (I think) - Good sounding intro after the rubbish of that rap song, but turns into another rappy song. If I had the option I would hit skip as I dislike most rap on grounds of it all sounding the same.

lol. each to their own. Volcano (Anti-Pop Consortium Remix) - Four Tet

6 (again I think) 15-50, good intro again, good instrumental track

We Could Forever - Bonobo. Nathan gave me the leak of this album last year, and I'm just rediscovering it. It's incredible.

7- Another instrumental intro, sounds good again, nice smoothing music

Ghost Riding The Whip - Blithe Field. Yeah, really nice music. Someone who really deserves more listeners.

8 - I say a pray, good track with some good lyrics.

Self Pity - Peter, Bjorn & John. Was a b-side or something for the album which has Young Folks? the whistling song? it's pretty cool.

9 - Good introduction, good song, lots of Wows

Wildcat - Ratatat. I'm not really familiar with their stuff but i thought it worked in the mix.

10 (I think) - another instrumental, I like my lyrics.

Lol wow, I really did put a lot of instrumentals in. sorry.

Tower Of Trellick - Kleerup. From a record I bought at a local record store for 50 cents. I really like it.

11 - 34:10 - good introduction, but another instrumental :(

:( A New Error - Moderat

12 - Around the 40 minute mark - could this be the first song in a while to feature actually lyrics? Doesn't sound like it, sounds like a live recording as there is crowd noise in the back-ground, daft-punk? Yes daft-punk with one more time, although it could be track 13 around 46 minutes, it's all merged into one.

Aha you got it. This is the encore from their live album from 2007. It's incredible! a mix of 4 different songs.

13 - 49 minutes, good sounding intro, sounds a bit eno-like.

Describing Bodies - Oneohtrix Point Never. This guy is amazing. Really nice music just made from a synth and an arpeggiator.

14 (53 minutes), good ending song, but another song with no lyrics

Avril 14th - Aphex Twin. the piano was used in Blame Game on Kanye's recent album.

Overall, 3/10, the rap at the start then all the instrumentals at the end really didn't sit with me, maybe it's the weather making me evil, sorry mixtape maker

Fair enough man. Sorry you didn't like it so much. Wanted to introduce you to some new stuff.

1.Megumi The Milkyway Above - Connan Mockasin

2.Never Stops - Deerhunter

3. 3.214 - Madvillain

4. Orange Juice - OFWGKTA

5. Volcano (Anti-Pop Consortium Remix) - Four Tet Remix

6. We Could Forever - Bonobo

7. Ghost Riding The Whip - Blithe Field

8. Self Pity - Peter, Bjorn & John

9. Wildcat - Ratatat

10. Tower Of Trellick - Kleerup

11. A New Error - Moderat

12. Human After All/Together/One More Time/Music Sounds Better With You (Live, 2007) - Daft Punk

13. Describing Bodies - Oneohtrix Point Never

14. Avril 14th - Aphex Twin

I'll give them a listen after exams :awesome:

SPOILER: LONG, POSITIVE REVIEW BELOW.

1. First track, starts out with some hazy guitar/drum combo that makes me think post-punk/garage(?) style. I am drawn to make comparisons to ‘The Pains of Being Pure At Heart’ but whether or not that is an accurate comparison I am unsure. When I realise that it is an instrumental and I think, “Fucked Up, perhaps?”, not that I have ever listened to them but they song would seem to fall into their style I would think. Again, maybe this comparison is erroneous. At any rate, I enjoy the song, not something I would ordinarily come across but now that I have come across I seem to like it. The song doesn’t really change much throughout the five minutes it runs for and I don’t really mind at all. A good way to open the tape.

2.This song starts of really weird, and then moves to this guitar riff and then the riff changes again to this synth sound and essentially the entire song is just this huge riff jam thing that sounds unlike anything that I have really come across before. Bass is great. I realise its another instrumental and I can’t decide whether I like this one or the previous more. This track does however have a bit more variety and flows on great from the previous.

3.This one begins sounding similar to the last song, except this one is an electronic sound with some synth keys over the top of it. Energy buildup in this song is great. Electric guitar comes in and reminded of post/experimental rock. This track has vocals as well! They work well with the song, adding something to it, rather than taking away from the great background that has worked its way into the track. If I took the song apart, I could probably recognise the other genres of music that make the song up but altogether, I can’t put my finger on what it is I essentially like, and it is this that makes me want to listen to it again.

4. Drum beat, handclaps then enter the guitar that I love. Vocals come in, the are good, not brilliant (almost as if he is saying the song with a bit more feeling that makes it sound like its singing, and it passes), and they remind me of someone whom I feel I have heard but probably haven’t. I like the melody/chorus thing and the guitar, once again, I love. Its a song that I feel I could listen to and just know that I like what I hear without having to worry about what I am hearing. That probably doesn’t make sense, but I like what I hear.

5. Xylophone/glock, claps, drums, trumpets. I love it already. It’s just like Los Campesinos whom has had their singer swapped with someone like Matt Beringer and and the female vocal complements it really nicely. Of course, its nothing like Los Campesinos! in it terms of anything else except maybe my obsession with whatever is going on in the song. The female verse makes me feel as if she probably just isn’t a guest appearance and the line “I’ll be there when the going gets going” makes me think that this song will probably be stuck in my head when it does too.

6. This song, at first, I think is completely different to the last and the vocals, along with the “Bup-bahs” make me think of Razorlight, even though I don’t listen to them anymore and that comparison if anything belittles the song. Song has a great atmosphere to it, and then about half way, it changes to this bridge thingy that I really like. It’s more diverse than I first thought. The song structure changes again I can’t help but feel that I haven’t heard anything like this for a while, although a hunch of mine suggests that whoever it is are probably know well, at least as far as the forum goes. If not, then they should know them. One of the great things about these exchanges is you get to make guesses just in case you were wrong, and if you were, they it’s another band that has been introduced to someone.

7. Piano! I have been waiting for one of these tracks. It has an eerie quality to it. The female vocal comes in and I am positive I know the voice, or have heard it before, or probably even have them on my iPod. But alas, I have never heard the song, but I am glad I have heard it now. It alternates between being upbeat to being rather reflective, and then around half away it has that great climax build up that is great. I really want to find out who this, so I can just download whatever album is it on and get lost in it for a week. Unless, of course, I do already have it! Great song at any rate.

8. At the moment I am listening to this song and I am unsure if the voice is familiar because I have listened to this tape about five times or because I actually do recognise it. If I did recognise it, I would have to say it has a Frames-y feel about it. Although, the song is nothing like I remember them to be, (I don’t listen to them anymore), and the sounds going on are really wonderful. Makes you feel like you want to do something important. And then I realise I am, I am writing this review! I will be holding onto this song for sure, in case I ever want to rock out, and I am sure I will.

9. Half way through the tape and my expectation is high, everything has been so good so far. Expectations are met. Great voice, great guitar and great song. Sounds American, from Texas? When he starts sing, “they don’t know just what the faithful do” I almost am inclined to think it is a Christian Rock band. I don’t mind if they are, it’s a good song. Nothing overly complex about it, nothing completely simple, just a good structured song.

10. Expectations exceeded. The guitar going on here is just incredible, to my ears at least. The singing gives the song a feel to it, that make me think its old. But it probably isn’t. I am glad this is one of the five minute tracks to say the least. The longer it goes, the more I become caught on what I am hearing and the more I just want to put it on repeat for a while. The ending is almost better than the beginning, but that would be a hard decision to make; its such a well balanced song.

11. This reminds me more of the first track, but its different. I gives off this mood, especially with whats going on with the bass, and the vocals, that its some kind of gothic, punk song. I don’t really know how else to describe it. I’m not a drawn to it as the others but I don’t dislike it either. Something you could really vent your anger to. Then it backs right off half way through the song before coming back in with these heavy thrusts of guitar. Definitely a goth-rock feel to it, however it is songs like these that make me realise how diverse music can be and can tell that whatever genre this band comes from, they are probably doing pretty well in it.

12. This voice is just weird. I want to say annoying but that wouldn’t be entirely true, because it has some quality to it that adds to the folky, guitar thing thats going on. I think this is definitely an older song. I like the second half more than the first but I am not quite sure why that is. Actually I think the bit where its just him and the drums I like best. Don’t know why that is either. All in all, I feel impelled to not give the song much though but somehow, I want to, not because I don’t particularly like it, but because despite its qualities that I don’t really like, I still want to listen.

13. This, I have to say, is my favourite song on the tape, and that is a big call to make, judging by the quality. If not my favourite, then definitely the catchiest. The keys in the background are great and the voice, although I have no idea what she is singing, is wonderful. Something I want to dance to, but it’s not a dance song, it’s just great. Everything that is going on contributes to the song and listening to it provides a very full experience indeed.

14. Piano keys, plus some weird sound, and then a voice that reminds me of early grizzly bear, only because I happened to be listening to them today. The rest is nothing like them. Still, I like it. I don’t know what else to say then that.

15. I love whats going on at the start here, and then it progresses into some Bon-Iver-y strumming and then the singing starts talking about “Caroline” and makes me want to know her. Seems Canadian to me. Could come from the other side of the world though, it has that universal feel to it. Not really, but you know what I mean. I don’t know who is singing but they aren’t bad, maybe even better than good.

16. Last track. It’s been over an hour and it honestly doesn’t feel like it. Part of me want it to keep going and the other wants it to be over, only so I can find out what the track listing is. I love the voice in this song, and the general feel is nice as well. The second half really gets stronger and reminds me of Dead Letter Circus a bit, but it dies back down. Good climax at the end and a good way to finish the tape.

Overall, I can safely say that I really, really liked the tape. I can’t help but feel that the reason it took so long to get to me was that you were trying to perfect. But then again, maybe I just like your taste in music. Either way, you did a wonderful job of putting together a tape of music that I had never heard before, something that was really diverse and will no doubt get me into lots of great bands. I liked how all the songs were between three and five minutes and I am glad that the mixtape went for over an hour; it wasn’t forced but just the right length to have covered all the ground that needed to be covered. Don’t mind all the comparison to these bands that you probably have never heard of either, (unless of course you want to discover some new bands too), they mainly help me come to terms with all this unfamiliar music being placed on me that I actually like. All in all, there wasn’t a single track I hated, or wouldn’t listen to again. Thanks heaps for the tape, and don’t worry about it being a week late either, the tape was well worth the wait.

Hey, I'm Emily your mixtape maker! :nice: [/color]
