Coldplay have talked to MTV News while they at this weekend's Austin City Limits fest, about unexpected team-up on the new album Mylo Xyloto - Rihanna. Here's what they had to say online:

Last week, Coldplay made headlines when they announced they'd be teaming with Rihanna on "Princess of China," one of 14 tracks on their upcoming Mylo Xyloto album. And while the news may have left some fans a tad, uh, puzzled, Coldplay say the collaboration was born out of a desire to keep reinventing their sound — not to mention necessity — as they told MTV News this past weekend at the Austin City Limits Festival. "Well, our new record is sort of a story; it's not quite a musical, but it's dangerously close. There's a bit of a love-story thread, so we really needed someone to sing even higher than me," frontman Chris Martin laughed. "[it's] hard, but very possible. You need to be a female really. For all [drummer] Will [Champion]'s good intentions, he [can't do it] ...

"Can't get that high, not these days," Champion added.

"... So, in like a dream scenario, we had a song that I'd secretly kind of written to see if Rihanna would want to sing it," Martin continued. "And then the rest of the band wanted to keep it, so we came up with the idea of asking her to sing it with us, and, to our great surprise, she said OK."

And as is the case with pretty much everything on Xyloto (due October 25), "Princess of China" finds the band expanding their sonic palette and pushing musical boundaries ... which, they'll have you know, is exactly the point these days. Because, after more than a decade of albums — and sales of more than 50 million worldwide — they feel they've earned the right to try something new.

"Well, her bit on our record is my favorite bit ... when the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it. And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we've been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music," Martin explained. "Because from where we're sitting, it seems like you can try and sound any way you like nowadays. You don't have to be in a rock box or a hip-hop box or a pop box, and I think it's fun when you embrace that idea."

Somehow the tone of the band's remarks struck me the wrong way in this interview. Wanting to go higher than Chris is cool, but sometimes I feel like the band would just accept their limitations a little more - they're 4 men. Such a check on themselves might prevent them from overloading their sound with synth among other stuff and trying to search for a "bigger" sound.

The optimistic flipside - experimentation, fuller sound, kickassness....I have high hopes for POC nonetheless.

I for one was delighted to hear about how they are trying to blend genres. I think Coldplay have always strived to better themselves and the result are all the fantastic varied albums they have given us. Besides the singing higher I think was half a joke: I am sure they just thought a female voice would be nice in this song and would fit with the  story

Of course they are able to alter their sound and to blend genres. We're talking about Coldplay here. And it's something they should try. But the outcome, from what I've heard so far, just sounds too artificial, too unsubtle to me. Besides, I've been waiting for an album full of subtle, classy songs that genuinely touch me since AROBTTH, and I'm sure they won't deliver that with MX this time. And also, maybe it's them, maybe it's EMI, but the way they're delivering everything, the Rihanna collab, the tacky, poppy singles... Even though they are not talking about it, chart success and straight cash is a necessity here.

They have nothing to lose themselves, so of course they should try what they want to try. But some fans, including me, do have something to lose, and have been dealing with disappointment after disappointment since June.

But still, I'll wait until I've heard the full album before I make a definitive opinion. The chance that it will be different from what I think now, though, is slinking every minute.

Chris really just needs to put a solo album out there so he can get all this silliness out of his system - where he can indulge in all the senseless collaborations he pleases! Because right now it really does seem like the rest of the band are getting complacent with the direction that Chris is taking, and they're just following suite. I know the words 'experimentation' and 'evolution' are being thrown around an awful lot to describe this new direction, but to me it just sounds like they're having an identity crisis

I disagree. I think they are making the statement, again and again , that they do not fit in any box and they don´t believe in music being genre-divided. To think the band would just go along with whatever Chris say, I think it would be not to give the remaining three members the importance they deserve: after all Coldplay is democratic and we know that they are brutal with their choices , so I don´t think anyone would be afraid to disagree, should they not like another´s suggestion.

If POC is their favorite song on the album, I can't help but be curious as to how its going to sound with Rihanna. I dont think October is getting here fast enough for us all, because if you like the direction Coldplay is going with MX or if you dont, it sure is making us all curious as to what the album as a whole is going to sound like! ;)

I think a lot of people are thinking "Shit, they've recorded a below-par Only Girl In The World/Umbrella/What's My Name/Russian Roulette". Look, half the reason Rihanna is crap is because she has crap songs. Didn't we all like PoC originally? As the other half, well that's her voice. And she sounds "completely different". So it's worth giving a chance?

I just wouldn't expect Coldplay fans to turn their nose up at other artists like this. Coldplay's music is all-embracing and appeals to the masses, so to be biased against certain artists working with the band is a bit daft if you ask me. By all means, dislike it. When you've heard it.

Rihanna is not an artist - she represents everything wrong with the music industry. It's because of the thinking behind manufactored pop like her little bands don't get a chance to grow and get ditched if they don't sell x amount.
