[7-Jun-2012] Coldplay @ Stadium of Light, Sunderland, UK

Don't like the new weather forecast

Dry to begin Thursday but becoming increasing unsettled with rain, persistent and heavy at times, later Thursday and into Friday. Windy.

For an outdoor gig wind is the worst thing as the sound will be all over the place.

Countdown to Coldplay

"Sunderland's Stadium of Light has well and truly cemented its place on the concert map,"

The Stadium of Light will play host to three spectacular shows next month, with Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen and Red Hot Chili Peppers set to rock Wearside.

Preparing for the shows is a huge operation, which began in earnest months ago with the concert promoters.

Each of the three shows is being delivered by a different concert promoter, SJM Concerts, who are already well acquainted with the Stadium of Light from their work with Take That's Circus Live and Progress tours, will be looking after the first show of the trilogy, Coldplay, which takes place in just a few days time (Thursday 7th June).

The main building work is well underway, with the stage taking shape and the stadium now starting to resemble a concert arena, rather than a football ground. Final preparations are in full swing for the hugely anticipated show.

And Rob Ballantine, director of SJM Concerts has reaffirmed the city's strength in attracting future big-name tours: "Sunderland's Stadium of Light has well and truly cemented its place on the concert map," he said.

"There's fantastic joined up approach by all agencies and commercial partners involved in delivering the concerts and there's a real can do approach throughout the entire staff at SAFC, which is also mirrored by Sunderland City Council.

"We're delighted to be returning to Sunderland on the back of the success of last summers' shows and I'm confident the club and the city will deliver for us once again"

Following the confirmation of the final stage set up and sight lines for the show a small number of additional tickets are now available from the usual outlets listed below:

Coldplay concert: travel update

Concert-goers attending the Coldplay concert this Thursday (7 June) are advised that there will be no Metro services running across the region on the day of the concert.

DB Regio Tyne and Wear (DBTW), which operates the Tyne and Wear Metro on behalf of Nexus, have confirmed that planned strikes by Metro workers will go ahead as planned after further discussions yesterday between them and the trade unions representing Metro workers ended without being resolved.

People are being urged to plan ahead and leave extra time for their journey and there is full advice for passengers on the travel information website http://www.nexus.org.uk and through North East Traveline on 0871 200 22 33.

Nexus have issued the following advice:

• There will be no Metro services throughout Thursday, 7 June - people should plan ahead and leave extra time for journeys by bus and other means.

• Anyone attending the Coldplay concert at the Stadium of Light is advised to travel as early as possible to Sunderland using alternative means, including local buses and rail services, or by getting dropped off in the city in the afternoon, by a friend or family member.

• A fleet of 55 special buses will run after the concert from Stadium of Light to Heworth Interchange and Newcastle City Centre to help people on their journey home. Staff will be on hand to direct people to these buses.

• Full details of services available and arrangements for Thursday 7 June can be found at http://www.nexus.org.uk along with travel planning advice. This is also available from North East Traveline on 0871 200 22 33.

• People should keep checking through local media and the website for the latest situation.

Further advice will be issued here on safc.com when it becomes available.

Metro strike set to spark Coldplay chaos

A METRO strike is set to spark chaos for thousands of rock fans after talks aimed at resolving the dispute broke down.

Union leaders yesterday rejected an improved pay deal from Metro operator, DB Regio Tyne and Wear. The strike will hit the travel plans of thousands of fans set to attend a Coldplay concert at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland, on Thursday.

Metro owner Nexus said it was disappointed its “generous” offer was not accepted and warned the strike will damage the region’s image. Union leaders agreed to take part in the talks, but only if there was a better offer than the already rejected 1.3per cent pay rise for drivers earning around £32,000 a year before overtime.

But Metro staff rejected the 2.1 per cent offer DB Regio Tyne and Wear as “not good enough,” triggering the first of two days of industrial action on Thursday. Micky Thompson, RMT representative, said: “It was a very long day of talks that began at 10am and ended at 3pm. During that time there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing until DB offered a 2.1 per cent pay award of £520, whichever is the greatest. We took time to consider this, but we ultimately decided it wasn’t good enough and didn’t meet our aspirational figures. Regrettably, the planned industrial action for June 7 will go ahead. We tried to resolve the matter and negotiate with the employer without having to resort to industrial action.”

The strikes planned for Thursday and June 21 coincide with concerts by Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light. Many fans were expected to use the Metro system to get to the concerts.

Metro workers have voted to strike in three separate disputes

Tyne and Wear Metro: Strike talks fail

Talks aimed at averting a strike on the Tyne and Wear Metro have broken down. Metro owners Nexus said Monday's talks between operating company DB Regio Tyne and Wear (DBTW) and RMT, Aslef and Unite unions failed to reach agreement.

The RMT union had announced 24-hour walkouts on 7 June and 21 June, while cleaners planned to strike on 10 June from 22:30 BST for 48 hours. Staff had voted to strike in three separate disputes over pay and other issues. Director General of Nexus Bernard Garner said: "I am very disappointed the talks between DBTW and the unions have broken down, despite a significantly improved pay offer on the table which can only be considered generous given the current economic climate in the north east.

"We continue to urge both sides to seek a resolution. The strike on Thursday will mean significant disruption for passengers, not least those heading to the Coldplay concert in Sunderland."

RMT representative Micky Thompson said the rejected 2.1% offer might be "perceived as a large pay offer" but did not address the "true rise in the cost of living".

Thousands of fans are due to visit the Stadium of Light on 7 June and 21 June as it is due to play host to Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen concerts.

It will be easier catching a train from Newcastle to Sunderland. Remember it's only the Metro system that is on strike and you can still catch the regular train :)

I currently live in Newcastle and will be catching the 11.04 or 11.16 train.
