Music fans set to flood Wearside

Music fans are expected to flood Wearside as tickets for Coldplay's Stadium of Light gig go on sale this Friday.

Scores of music fans from as far as Scotland are set to converge on Wearside tomorrow as queues for tickets to see Coldplay's live 2012 show at Sunderland's Stadium of Light open at 9am - 24 hours ahead of release at the venue.

The British music giants will perform at the stadium, which can hold up to 56,000 people during concerts, on 7th June 2012, and it is predicted that tickets will attract huge demand - and huge queues - when they are finally released for sale by the Sunderland AFC Ticket Office at 9am on Friday morning.

Preparations for the arrival of fans have already started on the stadium site, with barriers, stewarding and additional facilities all on standby to accommodate those hoping to camp out and get their hands on next summer's hottest music tickets.

Gary Hutchinson, Sunderland AFC's head of venue and events, commented: "We are delighted with the bands we have once again been able to attract to the Stadium of Light. Coldplay are a hugely influential and successful group, not only in Britain but across the world, and that has naturally resulted in huge interest in their sole appearance here in the North East.

"We are already gearing up for the arrival of fans when queues open at 9am on Thursday after huge demand for tickets to previous shows and there's usually a fantastic atmosphere around the place as people take their place."

Fronted by Chris Martin, the multi-award winning band will follow in the footsteps of fellow chart heavyweights Take That, Oasis, Pink and Kings of Leon, who have all played spectacular shows at the Stadium of Light since summer 2009 - resulting in a total of nine music concerts and nearly 500,000 music fans.

Sunderland AFC's chief executive Margaret Byrne said: "To have established the Stadium of Light as one of the top music venues in the country in just three years is a fantastic achievement both for the club and for the region and it's testament to the hard work and dedication of our concerts team and partners.

"To welcome a band of Coldplay's profile, alongside our Red Hot Chili Peppers show, highlights how our reputation and ability to deliver is now widely recognised across the music industry."

More than 100,000 concert-goers are expected to arrive in the region for the confirmed live music events at the Stadium of Light in summer 2012 when Coldplay will be followed by Red Hot Chili Peppers; the seminal US group playing one of their only two 2012 UK shows at the arena on 24th June.

And the benefits for Sunderland and the wider North East are once again set to be huge as up to 200 organisations come together to facilitate the shows, with an estimated £3.5m expected to boost the region's economy through sectors including transport and tourism, leisure, hospitality, and retail.

Last summer, music tourists - attracted by shows at the Stadium of Light and across the region, boosted the North East economy significantly, increasing the average hotel room rate by 42% and increasing hotel room occupancy to a whopping 98%. The five shows at the Stadium of Light - four by Take That and one by the Kings of Leon - were estimated to have stimulated £18m worth of regional trade alone.

For more information on concerts at the Stadium of Light, including details of corporate hospitality packages, which can be reserved now from £125 per person, contact the sales team on 0871 911 1555, email [email protected] / [email protected] or visit www.safcconcerts.com.

Fans to brave cold for Sunderland Stadium of Light Coldplay tickets

COLDPLAY fans from across the country will be bracing the cold tonight as they wait to snap up tickets to see the band.

The British music giants, pictured, will play at the Stadium of Light next summer.

Queues of fans are expected to start gathering at the stadium today to make sure they get a ticket when they go on sale at 9am.

Preparation for the fans’ arrival started yesterday with barriers, stewarding and additional facilities on standby for those hoping to camp out tonight.

Gary Hutchinson, Sunderland AFC’s head of venue and events, said: “We are delighted with the bands we have once again been able to attract to the Stadium of Light. Coldplay are a hugely influential and successful group, not only in Britain but across the world, and that has naturally resulted in huge interest in their sole appearance here in the North East.”

SAFC boss Margaret Byrne said: “To have established the Stadium of Light as one of the top music venues in the country in just three years is a fantastic achievement for both the club and the region.”

Fronted by Chris Martin, the band will play on June 7.

Sunderland beats UK venues in pre-sales

Pre-sale tickets for Coldplay's gig at the Stadium of Light sold out within 60 minutes on Thursday morning.

Sunderland's Stadium of Light has today out-sold all other UK venues in an exclusive pre-sale period for next summer's Coldplay concerts - leaving a limited allocation of tickets remaining for the Wearside show on 7th June 2012.

The pre-sale period, which opened at 9am this morning to give Sunderland fans the chance to book advance tickets through ticketing agency See Tickets via a special email code, was met with immense demand as the special allocation reached full subscription quicker than any of the band's other UK destinations.

Coldplay's summer tour will see the band performing at three other major UK arenas in 2012, with a show at Coventry's Ricoh Arena, two nights at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium in London and the band's only visit to the North East at the Stadium of Light, before concluding in Manchester at the Etihad Stadium.

Fans wanting to catch Coldplay's visit to Wearside can now queue at the Stadium of Light ticket office before remaining general admission tickets go on sale at 9am tomorrow morning (Friday) at an allocation of six per person, with ticketing agencies Gigsandtours.com, Ticketmaster.co.uk and Ticketline.co.uk also releasing their limited allocations, including seating, at the same time.

Sunderland AFC has unveiled a range of hospitality options - all with a guaranteed ticket to the concert - which can be purchased TODAY, and head of venue and events at Sunderland AFC, Gary Hutchinson, is urging music fans to make plans now to avoid disappointment.

Gary said: "The speed at which the pre-sale allocation was snapped up shows just how passionate people in the region are about having major music acts performing here in the North East.

"The pre-sale period is a great barometer of how high the demand for general admission tickets will be when they are officially launched tomorrow morning and with people already camping outside of the ticket office, I'd encourage anyone who wants to see the show to start looking at their options now to avoid missing out."

Hospitality options at the award-winning stadium, which can hold up to 56,000 people during concerts, start from just £140 per person (+VAT) - including a reserved seat for the concert and private bar access - and can be booked today via [email protected] or by calling 0871 911 1555.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers will also play one of their only two 2012 UK shows at the arena on 24th June, follow in the footsteps of fellow chart heavyweights Take That, Oasis, Pink and Kings of Leon, who have all played spectacular shows at the Stadium of Light since summer 2009 - resulting in a total of nine music concerts and nearly 500,000 music fans.

Coldplay fans shiver for their Sunderland Stadium of Light tickets

First in the queue for Coldplay tickets at the Stadium of Light are, from left, Josh Downs, Jack Wilson, Nathan Fryatt and Jonny Norman, all from Sunderland.

FANS braved dipping overnight temperatures to get their hands on hot Coldplay tickets.

Ardent followers of the band pitched their tents yesterday at the Stadium of Light to be first in the queue for tickets for next summer’s gig.

They went on sale at 9am today for the highly-anticipated concert which takes place on June 7.

Students Jonny Norman, Nathan Fryatt, Jack Wilson and Josh Downs, from Roker and Fulwell, stayed out overnight to secure their place at the front of the queue.

“We’re all big fans of Coldplay,” said 17-year Jonny, from Roker, “but I’ve never seen them live before.

“We are really looking forward to it.”

Seventeen-year-old Nathan, from Fulwell, said the chance to secure tickets had made the trouble worthwhile.

“It has been freezing cold and really windy, but it has been worth it,” he said.

“It didn’t put us off.”

The four-piece have proved popular on Wearside where tickets that were available before the official release have out-sold other venues on the tour.

The pre-sale period, which opened at 9am yesterday gave Sunderland fans the chance to book advance tickets through ticketing agency, See Tickets, via a special email code.

Gary Hutchinson, head of venue and events at Sunderland AFC, said: “The speed at which the pre-sale allocation was snapped up shows just how passionate people in the region are about having major music acts performing here in the North East.

“The pre-sale period is a great barometer of how high the demand for general admission tickets will be when they are officially launched.”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers will also play one of only two 2012 UK shows at the home of the Black Cats on June 24, following in the footsteps of fellow chart heavyweights Take That, Oasis, Pink and Kings of Leon, who have all played spectacular concerts at the venue.

It’s hoped one more act may be confirmed to play at the stadium next June.

Plenty of good pubs and bars and the atmosphere will be great throughout the day. If the weather is decent you can sample the beaches and the North Sea
