Track 1. This song is very upbeat with lots of drumming and a female singer. Not something I would normally listen to, but it's not bad.

Track 2. This one is Starlight by Muse. I used to listen to Muse, so I'm pretty familiar with their music. Starlight was one I never really liked very much.

Track 3. This one is by Sigur Ros. I'm not sure which song, but it sounds like it might be from ( ), which happens to be my favorite Sigur Ros album. It starts out slowly with just Jonsi singing with a piano and violins, and beings to build up (like most Sigur Ros songs). The end is really beautiful, I love the brass instruments and choir in the background.

Track 4. I think this flows nicely from the previous song. I hear a guy laughing in the beginning. This is an instrumental with violins/cellos and a piano. I think it must be an instrumental version of a popular song because the melody is reallllly familiar. Halfway through the song, it turns into a cover of Viva la Vida, and it appears they kept the "ooooooohs," or added their own maybe. This was a nicely done instrumental I think, I'm interested to know who did this.

Track 5. I haven't listened to this in a really long time, but I think this is the song Michael Stipe and Chris Martin recorded together. Don't remember what it's called. It's actually a pretty nice song. Their voices sound good together.

Track 6. Starts out with a news report of someone's death, and then some guy starts rapping. Rap isn't something I typically listen to, but this is not unbearable to listen to. It's actually pretty nice. It's depressing though, since it's about death and all. I like the strings in the background.

Track 7. Muse again. This one is United States of Eurasia, which I think is a bit cheesy and too similar to Queen. I do really like the piano solo at the end though.

Track 8. This one actually flows perfectly from the previous song; I couldn't even hear the previous one end and this one begin :| Anywho, this is a quieter song, with just a guy singing and a piano. The singer's voice sound really, really familiar. Eventually some string instruments come in and the song build up. This is such a pretty song, I'm curious to know who this is.

Track 9. This is another Muse song. I think this is the best one of the three. I don't remember the name of this one, and I'm not exactly sure which album it came from either; but it's kind of a haunting song. It starts out with a piano playing kind of quietly in the background and Matt Bellamy singing slowly. Then the piano bangs loudly, and the music crescendos before coming to an end.

Track 10. This one has lot of electric guitars and such. It sound like it might be from the 80s or 90s. I don't really like the singer's voice. It's not really the kind of music I'm into, to be honest.

Well, thank you mixtape maker! I was already familiar with some of the songs in this mixtape, but since I hadn't listened to those in a long time, it was nice to get to hear them again. I enjoyed the songs I hadn't heard before too. My favorites were 3, 4, 8, and 9

To my mix tape maker I'm sorry I haven't gotten to reviewing yet I've been busy. I will listen to it today when I get home

Dear mixtape-maker,

I am truly, very sorry it took me so long to write this review. The first deadline fell in the middle of my vacation, where I would have had all time to listen to it. The second one, though, was the Friday just before I had to go back to school, work and generally, life. So I'm sorry it took me so long, but I tried to listen to it almost every moment I had. Here's my review...

1. A very electronic song, no singing. I'm not really into electronic stuff, so I got kind of bored of this after 6 minutes. Not a clue who the artist is as well.

2. Much more enjoyable. Still kind of electronic, but this time guided by a beautiful female voice. Good song, good lyrics, great singer. I like it!

3. Now this is more my style! It's Edward Sharpe, right? I haven't heard their album yet, and this is one of the songs I didn't know. It's great!

4. Finally a song that I know: Subterranean Homesick Alien by Radiohead. I've never really been into them, but I (obviously) listened to OK Computer a bunch of times to at least try it.

5. I haven't got a clue who the artist is, but I really enjoy this song! I like how it starts small with the guitars and then builds up to something bigger, only to break down at the middle eight again. Nice instrumentation and a great voice.

6. Lovely short song, nice voice. I like it!

7. I didn't really like this one, too electronic for my taste. I'm guessing it's called 'Green Light'?

8. Another electronic track. I'm getting the feeling that's your favorite genre? ;) Again, not really what I regularly listen to, but quite cool.

9. Great track! The opening reminds me a bit of a Scooby Doo episode or one of those murder mysteries tv shows. I like the way it evolves into a really nice song. Great drumming too!

10. Another electronic track. Extremely long, and nothing really interesting happens, it just goes on and on and on... Sorry I can't be much more positive, but I'm really not into electro and there's quite a lot of it here.

11. Straight from the beginning I knew I was gonna love this song, and I was not disappointed. I'm very interested in seeing who this is... I love it!

12. Same as 11... this is exactly the type of music I really, really like. And again, not a clue who this is... But I really want to hear more!

13. Another lovely, almost acoustic track. Sounds like a singer-songwriter to me... I feel like I know who this is, but just can't remember who. Also love the near-choir singing at the end. Another thumbs-up from me!

14. I like the song, but the singer's voice... not so much. So a good song, but I would have liked it more if someone else sang it.

15. Really soft piano-track, it sounds almost classical at times... Very beautiful, and a great ending!

So in short: a few great tracks, a few OK tracks and a few I disliked (due to my dislike of electro music). Favorites: 3, 9, 11, 12, 13. Thank you for taking the time to make this for me!

Hi! I was your mixtape maker! I'm sorry that you didn't like the electronic music as much. I've been into it a bit lately and also wasn't really sure what kind of music you liked.

So here was the tracklisting:

So if you have any questions or want recommendations for any artists, just PM me! :)

So if you have any questions or want recommendations for any artists, just PM me! :)

Those are my favorite Edward Sharpe & Magnetic Zero and Other Lives' songs! :wacky:

Hi Emily, I’m Marie! Pleased to meet you in music :D

I kept your recommendations in a word document, I'll definitely check them out ;) Thanks :nice: As well as the bands I enjoyed the songs a bit more than the others!

And it’s okay about the tracks 7 and 9, I find out how to convert them in mp3, now I can listen to them with the media player I want :D

Hey Deirdre! I'm Emily, your mixtape maker. I'm glad you enjoyed it :) Sorry about the track 7 and 9 thing...I think those were in itunes format and I had trouble trying to convert them.

Anyway, I'll put some comments in red! :)

4. The first half of the song is a bit too calm for me. But the other half is brilliant with the hands clapping, heavier guitars and the choir or person singing with the singer who is a man.

I agree, the beginning is a little slow, but the second half is gorgeous. I actually received this song in a past exchange. It's Before I'm Old by Fictionist.

I have done that too in my mixtape, I put two songs of past exchanges that I still really enjoy listening to!

6. The singer’s voice reminds me strongly of Snow Patrol’s singer but the music style doesn’t really match. It’s more folk to me. Maybe it’s a duet with him and a band or a remix? There is a sort of choir behind the singer during the whole song. Nice song and I like the singer’s voice!

You're right, it's Gary Lightbody! This is another band that he formed called Tired Pony. They have a fantastic album called The Place We Ran From. I'm not sure if there are plans for another album, but I'm crossing my fingers!

I didn’t know his has another band! I'll definitely check Tired Pony out :D

7. I think it’s Ellie Goulding. Her voice is quite recognizable as well as her music style. I don’t know why but the synthetizer/keybord makes me think a bit of the one in a song with a completely different music style: ‘Looking Glass’ by The Birthday Massacre

Right again. I couldn't decide if I wanted to include her on the tape, because I know that she is really popular in other countries. She doesn't seem to be very big in Canada yet, though.

I don’t think she is very well-known in France either, at least I didn’t hear her music on radio or see her clips on TV! I think I read someday, somewhere an article (with video clips) about her on the Internet and/or maybe her music featured a tv ad, I can’t remember exactly :p

9. The singer’s voice reminds me of Franz Ferdinand’s singer but like track number 6 the music style doesn’t really match. It’s an electro-rock song to me.

This is the band White Lies. When I creeped your last.fm, I didn't see any White Lies so I knew I had to include them! They're fantastic. This one is Holy Ghost from their latest album (though it has already been a year since it was released!).

I heard good thing about them but never listen to their music before this mixtape! Maybe because, at the time, it was too much talking about them!? I’m often a train late

So here is the final tracklisting:

1) Dead Hearts - Stars

7) Your Biggest Mistake - Ellie Goulding

11) Believe - The Bravery

12) Oh No - Andrew Bird

13) You're A Wolf - Sea Wolf

14) The King And All of His Men - Wolf Gang

15) Hello Hurricane - Switchfoot

And a link in case others want it: http://www.mediafire.com/?bkhhspkzum6k6bk

Glad you enjoyed it. :)

Oh, and I called it "Watching the Skies" after the lyrics in "Hello Hurricane" where he sings "I've been watching the skies, they've been turning blood red..."

Thanks for satisfying my curiousity :D

Hey mixtape partner, my review's here.

Hey, Rudy :awesome: I thought for sure you'd guess it was me when you said you were gonna go through my Spotify.

Track 1

A great opener. I like both the melody and the vocal a lot. I don’t usually fancy female vocal much, but this one is awesome.

A truly irresistable song.

Old Man by a Norwegian Indie Pop group called Harrys Gym (without the apostrophe).

Track 2

My favorite track of the mixtape. :awesome: Basically it's a genre of music that I usually listen to. :wacky: Sounds like Butcher the Bar to me.

Thought you'd like this :nice: Sort of like the pop of Kings of Convenience meets the harmonies of Fleet Foxes. This is Dark Captain (Light Captain) from England, who site Fleet Foxes and The Avett Brothers amongst others as their influences.

Track 3

Female vocals again. But this is so amazing! I like the voice though, sounds so clear and smooth. The melody is great too.

Joker's Daughter - Mind of Gold. Their 2009 album, The Last Laugh, was one of my Christmas presents and I loved it. The band used to be a collaboration between Helena Costas and Danger Mouse but now consists of Costas with a new band.

Track 4

Female vocals. It sounds like a female version of Fleet Foxes to me, so yeah, incredible.

Another Norwegian artist, Phaedra. Her style is very similar to that of her friend Jenny Hval, who made a few top lists abroad.

Track 5

Is this Elbow? I'm pretty sure this is Elbow. A good track, but I wish the knocking sounds weren't there :freak: One of my favorites of the mix too.

I love the knocking sounds and the vague vocals.

Yes, it's Elbow :awesome: a b-side from one of their newest singles, Neat Little Rows. One of my favorite Elbow songs, actually :nice: Ticker Tape. Love the bass synth part in the chorus.

Track 6

So many instruments coming together, and I actually like the first 30 seconds more than the rest of the song but it’s a pretty good song overall.

Ah, that's a pity. This is a Danish electronic Indie band named When Saints Go Machine. The song is called Church and Law and the album Konkylie.

Track 7

I like how track 6 flows into track 7. I really like this one, reminded me of Fanfarlo with less folky vibes. The choice of instruments is excellent.

Thank you :nice: This year's best Norwegian release was To the Treetops! by Team Me, who have been praised by amongst NME (who do actually have some taste) and other international media. They remind me a lot of Mew. The song's called Weathervanes and Chemicals.

Track 8

So… Icelandic and… mystical. Reminded me of Joanna Newsom a little.

You're spot on: Soley is indeed from Iceland and is often compared to Joanna Newsom!

My mom just saw the comparison and bought her album while in Reykjavik, hehe. She's slightly more known for her work with Seabear with Sin Fang amongst others.

Track 9

Again another great flow from track 8 and track 9. It's quite nice, nevertheless, with falsetto and piano throughout the song.

Norway's finest, Susanne Sundfør.

Track 10

I like this one too. Violins, and piano, yeah. Pretty rock-ish. quite different from previous tracks. This isn’t English, is it?

Norway's biggest rock band since the release of their latest album(s) and the split of Madrugada. They have a very distinct sound. (Killer live band). They're called Kaizers Orchestra, and the song is probably their biggest success since Ompa Til Du Dør. The first album they released last year with this song (Hjerteknuser) on it was one of their finest.

Track 11

Mellower, with guitar. A simple but decent track, I don’t have much to write about it.

Taking a little break with a pure Americana song. Gillian Welch - Tennessee.

Track 12

A pretty mediocre female song… Not really my cup of tea, but it’s not a bad track though.

Eh. Sorry you didn't like it.

Emma Pollock of the Delgados - Nine Lives

Reminds me a little of Life in a Glasshouse.

Track 13

Acoustic at the beginning before an upbeat rhythm takes over. I like the melody, but I don’t really fancy the voice.

I have a thing for hoarse male voices. This one's probably owed to drugs. Roky Erickson, who used to sing for the 13th Floor Elevators, and Okkervil River - Goodbye Sweet Dreams.

Track 14

Good song, love the guitar tone. Sound familiar though.

My Morning Jacket - Wonderful (The Way I Feel). :nice: Proper folk-rock, been getting into them really lately. Picked this song over the monster "Holding on to Black Metal", also from Circuital. Definitely worth checking out.

Track 15

I know this one, or at least have heard it before somewhere. I'm eager to know who's this.

A good way to end a mixtape.

Really? I guess it might sound like something familiar. Margot and the Nuclear So and So's.

Thanks to whoever made this mixtape, I loved it. Good to hear music that I don't normally listen to. Great job! :nice:

Sorry for the shitty reviews though. I suck at writing reviews, I apologize. :disappointed:

^ I'm really hoping track 8 is Ólöf Arnalds. :wacky:

Sorry :(

Superb mixtape! :nice:

*waits impatiently for her mixtape to be reviewed* :|

Oh crap, I was supposed to do this last weekend, I'll do it this evening. Sorry.

I think for the next exchange everyone should just make a mixtape and then it will go to a random person.

Does that make sense? :|

I'm so sorry to whoever is waiting for me to review my mixtape. I've been busy and haven't had a chance to get to it. Hopefully within the next few days

I should just stop making promises I always screw up :(

So without further ado here's my review, the horribly late version.

Track 1: Love the intro, very soothing, lovely choir-like singing too. A lot of noises(lack a better word :P). Very uplifting song.

Track 2: Don't let them by Other Lives :) Love it.

Track 3: Not really my cup of tea, but it's not so bad :)

Track 4: Is that a harp I hear? Nice song.

Track 5: Well that's a change of pace :stunned: Don't like his voice :( Not my favorite song on the tape I'm afraid.

Track 6: That's more like it, that is some skilled guitar playing. And I love his voice and rythm.

Track 7: Holy shit, that voice is cooooool :laugh3: Song is pretty good too.

Track 8: This sounds familiar, very familiar actually. Good song. I must know who this is.

Track 9: Like the opening, lyrics are good. Very nice song.

Track 10: Just like track 8 this sounds reaaaally familiar. I'll probably know who this is when I see the tracklist and say "How could I not remember them!"

So I really liked the tape and I can't wait to see the tracklist. Agains sorry I was so late with the review :(

I think for the next exchange everyone should just make a mixtape and then it will go to a random person.

I think for the next exchange everyone should just make a mixtape, and then listen to the one they get and bloody review it.

Oh and they shouldn't be allowed to sign up unless they can spare the time.

Yeah, I'm not bitter..... :P

I'm really sorry it's taken me so long to get this done. I've been busy.

Track 1: Mixtape starts with some backwards vocals and weird electronic noises. The keyboards sounds good in this along with the drums. The vocals harmonies are nice, but I'm not sure how much I like them going along with the music. The song overall is fun.

Track 2: This sounds like the same artist as from the previous song. I'm not sure if these songs are both on the same album, but the flow from the previous song worked pretty well. I think this song better than the other one. The harmonies are really good and the overal arrangement is good to. The song then turns into something different. The song initially sounded very clean and soft, but then some distortion comes in which makes the song almost turn into like a nightmare. The song then really slows down. Very interesting overall arrangement of the song.

Track 3: The song starts off witha mandolin/ukulele sounding instrument. I can already tell who this is. This is Beirut. The vocals are very recognizable as well as the use of an accordian. I'm not a huge fan of the band to be honest, but this is a good song.

Track 4: The song starts off very slow with a nice orchestral arrangement. This soon ends and you hear an acoustic classical guitar with a female vocalist. Her voice sounds a little familiar. The song then soon picks up in tempo with drums and a song that once was really slow is now very upbeat.

Track 5: The song starts up with vocals, guitar and clapping. The vocals do sound familiar. I'm not a huge fan of the vocals though. Not a huge fan of the song to be honest. Though when the piano comes in I like the song much more.

Track 6: The song opens with really airy vocals and acoustic guitar. It's a very spacey sounding song. The song then really picks up with the drums. I like this song

Track 7: The song starts with electronic sounding beats, followed by some electric guitar after. The vocals are a bit different, but I like the overall stripped down sound.

Track 8: The song opens with electric piano and some electronic sounding beats initially. The vocals start off and are airy. I really like this song so far, This one would definitely be my favorite so far. The overall arrangement and vocals are really good. I'm interested to know who this is.

Track 9: Song starts off with vocals and guitar. I really like this overall arrangement of songs. I want to say it's Bon Iver because it sounds similar, however I haven't listened to enough Bon Iver to say, but it's close. This is a really good song overall! The song then really changes This sounds like Fleet Foxes. I feel I've heard this song before.

Track 10: The song starts with some really good harmonies and piano. I like this song quite a bit. Overall I really enjoyed tis song

Track 11: The song starts off with some weird sounds an piano. I really like the sound of this song a lot. The vocals work really well with the song. I really like this song a lot. Extremely well written. I just wish the vocals were louder in the mix. This is a really great song! It might be my favorite off this mix.

Track 12: The last song of the mix. It starts with an electric piano and some distorted and distant vocals. I really like this song a lot. The overall arrangement is great! This may be my favorite song off the mix, I'm not sure.

Overall I'm not a huge fan of the mix. There were a few songs that I really enjoyed (songs 8, 11, and 12). But overall I guess I'm not too much of a fan anymore of more folky songs which I felt the mix mostly consisted of. But it was still good to listen to songs I haven't heard before.

Hi, I was your mixtape maker.

Is there anyone else waiting for their tape to be reviewed? Or is it just little ole me..?

Cos if there's someone else waiting, then I thought we could review each other's tapes - I've given up on my partner, he/she's not posted for over a month & I'm fed up waiting... Can't we name & shame the ones that sign up and disappear?
