January 6, 201214 yr Ok, here's my review - I'm sorry it's not more positive but Apparatjik-aside, electronic-ey music isn't really my genre - it's not that I didn't like it, it's just that there was so much of the same sort of music that is just synths and very little else that it kind of made it hard for me to review (because there's not much there to describe or maybe because i don't know enough about that genre to notice the nuances and differences) Generally, I found the lack of variety of styles/instruments to be a bit monotonous, sorry. On the whole, it'd make a great tape of unobtrusive background music to play whilst doing something else but for me I like more guitars, more melody and especially on a mixtape, something that hooks you in and gets the track noticed. A good job though, please don't think I hated it or anything, cos I didn't :) 1 - nice atmosphere, blips and whistles. nice build up, an interesting instrumental but doesn't really seem to go anywhere 2 - god this is weird, sounds like german rap/reggae, it's got a good beat to it and it's catchy but i'm not a big fan of the vocal/singing style. 3 - another instrumental, quite like this one, it sounds like there's proper bass and guitar in here (which tbh is somewhat lacking in this mixtape) but there's still quite a bit of synths in there, it does build well and get more interesting towards the end. not bad. 4 - nice transistion into a calm, tinkly beginning then this relentlessly irritating drum machine beat gets added in & it's just another synth-based, electronic track that just plods along and doesn't really do anything much, it doesn't do anything for me, sorry 5 - starts promising, hopefully those are real drums for a change. don't like the girl's vocal tho. musically, i like this, it's got good, dirty guitar lines & just enough synths for me to me to cope with. sounds a bit like the joy formidable but the vocal lets it down, she sounds like a little girl, it's a bit annoying, plus the lyrics are quite bland. i do like the gong at the end tho haha 6 - hmmmm Apparatjik huh? Your Voice Needs Subtitles. Good choice, Maybe i'm biased but this is far more melodic to my ears then the other electronic tracks on the tape, i like the fact that the piano and the vocal dominates rather than the drum machine 7 - ok sensing more electronics, i guess this is more interesting than a relentless dance beat, it sounds nice, it almost sounds like something the beta band would do..almost 8 - starts off sounding like another a beta band-alike backing track, they had a better singer tho :P not too bad this one tho. still synth-ey but rockier and a bit grungey 9 - bit more variety in the instrumentation, which is very welcome at this stage - kind of like country banjo meets eastern strings, has a little indian flavour, i like it 10 - sounds vaguely familiar but not sure where i've heard it before, hang on - gorillaz is it? i like the laid-back, almost lazy beat and i don't normally like damon albarn's voice but he doesn't sound too annoying here, track's a little dull but not too bad 11 - dunno what to say about this, it's not bad, it's pretty harmless but it's dead boring, it's got one of those generic dance record singers, there's nothing remarkable about it 12 - pretty saturated with electronic tracks at this stage tbh, sorry. this is just another track laden with synths, drum machine and nothing else, it sounds ok, it's not a bad track or anything but i'm finding it hard to get enthusiastic about it

I'm interested to find out what it is or what it is from. 2) I don't really like this song. I can see why others would like it, but it's just not my cup of tea. I think I've heard this artist in a past exchange. She has a nice voice, but I don't really like it. I can't explain what it is, but there is something about her voice that irritates me when she hits higher notes. 3) I love the strings in this song. The vocalist has a nice voice as well. He reminds me a little of Marcus Mumford. 4) Gorgeous song! I love her voice, the guitar, the harmonies, everything. I like how it starts off simply and then layers on vocal and instrumental harmonies. I can't wait to find out who this is so I can listen to more from her! 5) Hey There Delilah - Plain White Ts. I'd forgotten how much I love this song. <3 6) Yeah when I'm with you, I have fun... Really upbeat and fun song. It sounds like something that would be on Gossip Girl or in a TV commercial. I can definitely see this making it on to my summer 2012 playlist! 7) I love the guitar bit at the beginning. He has a really nice sound to his voice as well. Great song. 8) Fantastic stomping-ish beat. Their voices blend together so nicely. Really good song. 9) I really like the instrumentals in this song. I'm going to take a guess and say that this is Bon Iver...? I don't know many of his songs, but I think I recognize his voice and style. I keep meaning to look up more from him, but I always forget. Now I'll remember! 10) Ooooh pretty orchestra piece! It's very wintery and Nutcracker-y at the beginning. I'm curious to find out what this is from, as it sounds to me as if it is from a movie score? Am I right? :P 11) You know when you can tell from the first chord that you're going to love a song? Yeah, this is one of those songs. I think I've heard this artist in a past exchange. Is it Frightened Rabbit? His voice is very distinct, so I have a feeling it is! 12) This song is pretty good. Not my favourite, but it's not bad. She has an interesting voice and I like the instrumentals. 13) This song sounds very dark and mysterious. I like her voice. Can you tell that I'm running out of things to say? This always happens to me in reviews. 14) I liked this song at first, and I kept waiting for something else to happen. Maybe some vocals to start up, or maybe for it to just kick it up a notch....aaaanndddd it didn't. I found it a little boring. Sorry! 15) Interesting song. It sounded like a dolphin was singing in the background at parts!! It was amusing, but not my favourite. 16) Another interesting song! I liked this one. It was cool. January 6, 201214 yr Okay, here's my review! :wacky: Track 01: An excellent opener. Very calming and I love the simple lyrics and the guitar and the occasional piano at the end and pretty much everything about this track, the singer has such a nice soft voice. There's something in the arrangement that reminds me a tiny bit of Bon Iver. I actually had to google this song, I need to hear more from this guy! Sorry for cheating though. Track 02: This one's got an acoustic guitar, too, and both male and female vocals. There's something very Elbow-ish in that guitar? Slow tempo, beautiful vocals, I do like the sound of this. Track 03: Another guitar plus a male voice, this one's more up-tempo than the previous ones though. The lyrics are really uplifting, this is the kind of song you could easily imagine playing in a movie scene or tv-series. I guess this is very easily-listenable, not bad at all! Track 04: At this point I wonder whether this is gonna be an all-acoustic mixtape? I love the lyrics, they're very sweet and this has such a cute little storyline. His voice plus the guitar is a very nice combo and it doesn't really need anything else, simple and sweet. Track 05: Okay, not acoustic anymore. This one constists of lots of different sounds, electric guitar and beats with rather minimalistic vocals. Much darker than the previous songs. I look forward to hearing where this mixtape is going. Track 06: Oh, another slightly darker track. To me this comes out as quite mysterious and athmosperic, I absolutely adore the layers and texture of this song. The ”Your heart's a mess” -bit is stunning. Track 07: I really enjoy electronic tunes and this one has those, yay! The sound of breaking glass or something in the middle of this song is so cool. Liked this! Track 08: Hmm. This sounds quite mediocre. I'm not quite sure whether I like this or not, this doesn't have any surprising elements as it's very straightforward. I'm afraid this is a little so-so. Just doesn't appeal to me as much as the others. Track 09: Slow, calm, floaty. He has a nice voice, this song does feel like floating up in the air, very chill. The second part of this song is different: catchy and repetitive, I like the progressing to this point at the end of the song. Nice one! Track 10: Again quite floaty and the singer keeps repeating the same lyrics, mesmerizing. This has some serious 80's vibes to it, instantly sets my mood to nostalgic. Track 11: Oh, a danceable up-beat track! Wasn't expecting this. Nothing spectacular but it makes me feel energetic and happy. Quite forgettable though. Track 12: I like how retro this sounds with that echoy guitar and dancebeats which are then combined to these very modern electonic beats. I like the feel of this, funky and psychedelic! There is something very captivating in the overall feeling of this song, great example of something I probably wouldn't normally listen to yet thoroughly enjoyed. Track 13: Such a gorgeous track. Just.. the lyrics and especially those female vocals during the second half of this song just give me the chills. So emotional and beautiful. Track 14: Wow, I really like this funky/jazzy combination of instruments and that guitar! I think this gives a wonderfully celebrative end to the mixtape. Overall: I enjoyed this mixtape a lot, it had a nice flow to it plus a like how it had the somewhat acoustic beginning which then evolved into these varying electronic songs with more instruments. January 8, 201214 yr Here I am with my review, I’m sorry it took me so long! Watching the Skies 1. It’s a duet between a man and a woman. Each one sings a verse, it’s like they’re chating together, and in the chorus their voices unit and go very well together. The story they’re telling is nice (I almost understand everything on the second listening :D). I like the quiet music and with their voices it makes a beautiful song! :heart: 2.This track reminds me of the music style and the singing of Alexander (for example: 'A Million Years'). It makes me also think of a one man orchestra. The music is catchy. It’s a folk track to me. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5beDmeylV1o]Alexander Ebert - Million Years - YouTube[/ame] 3. It’s more a soft rock/punk song to me mixed with violins and piano. The two verses follow each other and the music played is composed by only drums, violins and guitars. It contrasts with the chorus. The singer is a man and his voice reminds me a bit of the punk/emo singers. In the chorus, he is joined by a woman I think and also towards the end of the second verse. :heart: After a few listenings I wonder if it might be Dashboard Confessional? 4. The first half of the song is a bit too calm for me. But the other half is brilliant with the hands clapping, heavier guitars and the choir or person singing with the singer who is a man. 5. It’s a duet sing all along by a man and a woman. The man has quite a deep voice and the woman sometimes a calm, sometimes a high voice, they go nicely together. It’s a ballad, almost an acoustic song: guitar, violin, voices. The song is about what the river brings to the singers from what I understand (or not?)! While listening to it, I thought of being in a rowboat upon a river watching the sky :D :heart: Are they English (they say 'water' in an English way)? 6. The singer’s voice reminds me strongly of Snow Patrol’s singer but the music style doesn’t really match. It’s more folk to me. Maybe it’s a duet with him and a band or a remix? There is a sort of choir behind the singer during the whole song. Nice song and I like the singer’s voice! 7. I think it’s Ellie Goulding. At the beginning there is a modified voice, like a robot singing. The music is electro-alternative to me. I recognize a xylophone in the chorus :nice: Her voice and her music style reminds me of Emilie Simon (for example: 'All is White' - Live). January 8, 201214 yr Finally... my review... sorry it took so long! :embarrassed: I'm working for a film festival at the moment and that is quite exhausting and time consuming... plus I have to do things for my actual work on top... First, let me say that I'm not really good at putting my feelings into words. Whenever I have to write something about movies I've seen (for work) I stare at the empty message field for an eternity before I have sorted my mind! This is the first time I'm participating... hope I'm not doing it wrong. :uhoh: Anyways, here it goes: Track 1: "I wanna be where you are"... "lose your speed"... Good opener, I like the lyrics and melody! At the beginning I thought it was a little "U2-ish" but then that feeling quickly faded. I like the song. :) Track 2: This one's more calm, I like the singer's voice!! It reminds me of some singer's voice but I can't tell which one. :bomb: It's a rather simple song but good to listen to at work because it's not "disturbing". The instrumental part in the middle and at the end itself / alone would have been a nice song, too! Track 3: Instant love when I heard the guitar at the beginning, no disappointment either when the vocals and other instruments start! Such a nice song, exactly my taste. :heart: Thank you, mixtape-maker!! Track 4: Another instant love track! I listened to this one a couple of times, got it stuck in my mind for hours. It's so "fresh and happy-making" for lack of a better description... I'm so exhausted! :disappointed: Track 5: This one's more suitable for depressed Sundays at home... my feeling anyways. Not a bad thing at all though. :D I like the brass in it!! Track 6: Uiii, more upbeat, it's like... Kasabian meets Bon Jovi in a good way?? I suck at describing. Big time. I don't want to insult the song hehe. It's nice but there are better songs on this mix for me. :) Track 7: This one sounds as if it's older already or just retro? Anyways quite cool song, nice rhythm. I like the strings, can't go wrong with strings in songs hehe. I'd label it as "radio friendly" song. Track 8: The Killers!! Does my mixtape-maker have a subscription to Q magazine as well I wonder? I'm not a fan of U2 but I really liked the "Achtung Baby Covered" album, we play it at work, too. :) Track 9: Milow, second song I knew hehe A colleague at work gave me his album... You picked one of the songs I like. Milow annoyed me big time with this "You and me in my pocket" song. I could rant for a long time about how much the lyrics annoy me but I better let it be, doesn't belong here. Track 10: Another one of those songs that have won already within the first seconds of listening. Very short! Could be from a soundtrack? I'm curious to find out who the female singer is. Track 11: Haha, change of genre. Kaiser Chiefs!!! Makes me remember the great time at Main Square Festival last summer. :heart: We had so much fun during their set. This one fits perfectly to my current mood! It's uplifting with cool lyrics and melody. I like! Track 16: Shit!! I know that band but can't tell which one it is without cheating! The whole album "Sort of Revolution" is awesome, I bet you'll like "Perfect Darkness" as well. :nice: I'll see him again in April!! :awesome: Track 02: This one's got an acoustic guitar, too, and both male and female vocals. There's something very Elbow-ish in that guitar? Slow tempo, beautiful vocals, I do like the sound of this. It's "Lay & Love" by Bonnie Prince Billy. In September I went to a cinematic art fair and there I saw "This must be the place" with Sean Penn. In the movie there's a band called "The Pieces of Shit" who cover the song. Straight after I came home I had to buy this song... That time the soundtrack wasn't out yet but the original is just as beautiful to me. Glad you like it! Track 03: Another guitar plus a male voice, this one's more up-tempo than the previous ones though. The lyrics are really uplifting, this is the kind of song you could easily imagine playing in a movie scene or tv-series. I guess this is very easily-listenable, not bad at all! This is Ryan Gosling singing! I love this song so much... Wish it was more known. Track 04: At this point I wonder whether this is gonna be an all-acoustic mixtape? I love the lyrics, they're very sweet and this has such a cute little storyline. His voice plus the guitar is a very nice combo and it doesn't really need anything else, simple and sweet. Hehe sorry, it's just that I like those. I love the lyrics so much, wish a certain person would say just parts of those lyrics to me. Because I don't mind if we take our time :disappointed: :bigcry: /personalstorytime Track 05: Okay, not acoustic anymore. This one constists of lots of different sounds, electric guitar and beats with rather minimalistic vocals. Much darker than the previous songs. I look forward to hearing where this mixtape is going. It's Calexico & Iron & Wine from the "I'm not there" soundtrack. I got this song and track 4 from a friend, I'm so thankful for that. Track 06: Oh, another slightly darker track. To me this comes out as quite mysterious and athmosperic, I absolutely adore the layers and texture of this song. The ”Your heart's a mess” -bit is stunning. I know!! I love the song itself, but also because the lyrics exactly fit my current situation. Remember the "Really sad songs" thread (or whatever it was called)? Someone posted Gotye's "Somebody that I used to know" video in there and that made me look up more of his songs. "Hearts a mess" made me speechless... "Night Drive" is also a song I can recommend. :nice: Track 07: I really enjoy electronic tunes and this one has those, yay! The sound of breaking glass or something in the middle of this song is so cool. Liked this! Haha yes exactly! The breaking glass sound is so so cool! It's Bodi Bill from Berlin, all credits must go to the friend again who gave it to me. :heart: Track 08: Hmm. This sounds quite mediocre. I'm not quite sure whether I like this or not, this doesn't have any surprising elements as it's very straightforward. I'm afraid this is a little so-so. Just doesn't appeal to me as much as the others. Well, it's ok, you don't have to like every song. :nice: I enjoy the song... particularly the lyric "The face you hide is the one I see" It took me a while to get into the song, too. But then I was hooked. Track 09: Slow, calm, floaty. He has a nice voice, this song does feel like floating up in the air, very chill. The second part of this song is different: catchy and repetitive, I like the progressing to this point at the end of the song. Nice one! It's Band of Skulls, saw them last year in Cologne, 4hrs drive for them, again totally worth it! You should check out some of their other songs, I recommend you start with "Honest", "Death by diamonds and pearls" and "Fires". And "Impossible". Hell, the whole "Baby Darling Doll Face Honey" album is cool. :lol: Track 10: Again quite floaty and the singer keeps repeating the same lyrics, mesmerizing. This has some serious 80's vibes to it, instantly sets my mood to nostalgic. Ok, you know I work in a cinema and I'm just a film person, can't help it... :lol: This is a song from the movie "Drive" with Ryan Gosling. Go see it!! I liked the movie a lot and the soundtrack is just awesome. Track 11: Oh, a danceable up-beat track! Wasn't expecting this. Nothing spectacular but it makes me feel energetic and happy. Quite forgettable though. Hehe, I'm not depressive 24/7 :P Like you say, it's a happy song!! I like the melody and the lyrics!! "You're so restless, you're gonna end up alone"... In contrast to you, I have this song stuck in my mind for hours whenever I listen to it! Track 12: I like how retro this sounds with that echoy guitar and dancebeats which are then combined to these very modern electonic beats. I like the feel of this, funky and psychedelic! There is something very captivating in the overall feeling of this song, great example of something I probably wouldn't normally listen to yet thoroughly enjoyed. Yay, makes me happy to hear that! This is one of the songs that lifts my mood, no matter how tired I am in the morning... this song, really loud, in the car. Awesomeness. It's Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie XX. You might also like "New York is killing me". :) Track 13: Such a gorgeous track. Just.. the lyrics and especially those female vocals during the second half of this song just give me the chills. So emotional and beautiful. William Fitzsimmons is just awesome, glad you like the song as well! :dance: His songs are a hit at work, too. Some customers have already asked me what album I'm playing hehe. Track 14: Wow, I really like this funky/jazzy combination of instruments and that guitar! I think this gives a wonderfully celebrative end to the mixtape. RJD2's "Ghostwriter" is another song of the category "Instant mood lifter" to me! There were 2 more songs on my tape though? :uhoh: Didn't you get those? :thinking: They're both by Archive. Favourite band, full stop. I could've made a mixtape containing just songs by them! :lol: Overall: I enjoyed this mixtape a lot, it had a nice flow to it plus a like how it had the somewhat acoustic beginning which then evolved into these varying electronic songs with more instruments. Anyway, I'll put some comments in red! :) Here I am with my review, I’m sorry it took me so long! Watching the Skies 1. It’s a duet between a man and a woman. Each one sings a verse, it’s like they’re chating together, and in the chorus their voices unit and go very well together. The story they’re telling is nice (I almost understand everything on the second listening :D). I like the quiet music and with their voices it makes a beautiful song! :heart: I love this song, it's so pretty. It's Dead Hearts by Stars. I definitely recommend checking them out. My other favourite by them is Your Ex-Lover is Dead and Calendar Girl. 2.This track reminds me of the music style and the singing of Alexander (for example: 'A Million Years'). It makes me also think of a one man orchestra. The music is catchy. It’s a folk track to me. I went through a major obsession with this song over the summer! It's Furr by Blitzen Trapper. 3. It’s more a soft rock/punk song to me mixed with violins and piano. The two verses follow each other and the music played is composed by only drums, violins and guitars. It contrasts with the chorus. The singer is a man and his voice reminds me a bit of the punk/emo singers. In the chorus, he is joined by a woman I think and also towards the end of the second verse. :heart: After a few listenings I wonder if it might be Dashboard Confessional? Nope, not Dashboard Confessional. This band is called Wakey!Wakey!...I haven't heard many of their songs, just this one and a few others. But I really like this one. 4. The first half of the song is a bit too calm for me. But the other half is brilliant with the hands clapping, heavier guitars and the choir or person singing with the singer who is a man. I agree, the beginning is a little slow, but the second half is gorgeous. I actually received this song in a past exchange. It's Before I'm Old by Fictionist. 5. It’s a duet sing all along by a man and a woman. The man has quite a deep voice and the woman sometimes a calm, sometimes a high voice, they go nicely together. It’s a ballad, almost an acoustic song: guitar, violin, voices. The song is about what the river brings to the singers from what I understand (or not?)! While listening to it, I thought of being in a rowboat upon a river watching the sky :D :heart: Are they English (they say 'water' in an English way)? I love this song. It's The Water by Johnny Flynn, and it features Laura Marling. They are both brilliant artists, and they sound so lovely together. And yep, they're English! 6. The singer’s voice reminds me strongly of Snow Patrol’s singer but the music style doesn’t really match. It’s more folk to me. Maybe it’s a duet with him and a band or a remix? There is a sort of choir behind the singer during the whole song. Nice song and I like the singer’s voice! You're right, it's Gary Lightbody! This is another band that he formed called Tired Pony. They have a fantastic album called The Place We Ran From. I'm not sure if there are plans for another album, but I'm crossing my fingers! 7. I think it’s Ellie Goulding. Her voice is quite recognizable as well as her music style. :heart: I don’t know why but the synthetizer/keybord makes me think a bit of the one in a song with a completely different music style: ‘Looking Glass’ by The Birthday Massacre :wacko: Right again.:) I couldn't decide if I wanted to include her on the tape, because I know that she is really popular in other countries. She doesn't seem to be very big in Canada yet, though. 8. It’s kind of an indie/folk song to me. The singer is a man. I like the chorus and especially the electric guitars in it. I'm realizing now that I have a lot of folk-y type songs on this tape! I've been listening to that genre a lot lately. :) This one is the lovely Pulling on a Line by Great Lake Swimmers. 9. The singer’s voice reminds me of Franz Ferdinand’s singer but like track number 6 the music style doesn’t really match. It’s an electro-rock song to me. This is the band White Lies. When I creeped your last.fm, I didn't see any White Lies so I knew I had to include them! They're fantastic. This one is Holy Ghost from their latest album (though it has already been a year since it was released!). 10. At the beginning there is a modified voice, like a robot singing. It sounds like a man’s modified voice but it’s a woman who sings the rest of the song, although the 'robot voice' appears again later in the track. I like her voice. The music is electro-alternative to me. I recognize a xylophone in the chorus :nice: Her voice and her music style reminds me of Emilie Simon (for example: 'All is White' - Live). I'm Good, I'm Gone by Lykke Li. If you like her, I recommend I Follow Rivers, Get Some, and Little Bit. 11. It’s a soft rock-alternative song to me. The singer is a male. Sing: 'So give me something to believe, ‘cause I am living just to breathe…' and move head :D :heart: Believe by The Bravery. My other favourites from them are Bad Sun, Time Won't Let Me Go, and Ours. 12. This track could be part of a soundtrack for summer holidays :D It’s casual if I can say so. But I think the lyrics don’t match the music, I don’t understand all the lyrics but sociopaths are involved :D Sorry if I completely misunderstood the lyrics :blush: But I didn’t want to google them. There is whistling at the beginning and the end. A man is singing. I like the background voices and the hands clapping which begin at the half of the song. Oh No by Andrew Bird. Haha yeah I don't really understand the meaning of the lyrics either. :P I just like the music! 13. A man is singing. It’s a quiet song. I recognize acoustic guitars, drums, violins. Maybe ’You’re a wolf’ is the title of the track? I don’t really get carried away by it. You're a Wolf by Sea Wolf. I can see why you might not like it...it is rather calm and it doesn't really pick it up throughout the song. 14. It’s an alternative song to me, a bit like MGMT but less psychedelic :D The singer is a man. It’s a catchy song. You dance and sing along to it. :heart: Now that you mention it, it is a little like MGMT. This one is The King and All of His Men by Wolf Gang. 15. The voice of the male singer seems familiar to me and I like it! It’s an alternative-rock song to me. Go on electric guitars :D :heart: Hello Hurricane by Switchfoot. I haven't turned my review in yet, but also haven't had the chance to listen to it all as of yet... Anyways, I'm glad you liked it and here's my comments and at the end, the big reveal ;) Track 1: "I wanna be where you are"... "lose your speed"... Good opener, I like the lyrics and melody! At the beginning I thought it was a little "U2-ish" but then that feeling quickly faded. I like the song. :) This is 'Be Where You Are' by Dutch band Handsome Poets. I first got to know them last year (2011 yay!) when they were the support act of the band I work for. I saw them three times last year, and they put on an amazingly energetic show every time. This is song they open their gigs with, and I figured this might make a cool opener for my mixtape as well. Track 2: This one's more calm, I like the singer's voice!! It reminds me of some singer's voice but I can't tell which one. :bomb: It's a rather simple song but good to listen to at work because it's not "disturbing". The instrumental part in the middle and at the end itself / alone would have been a nice song, too! This song is 'This Old Town' by Lorrainville. It's also a Dutch band, but an odd one. They consist of a group of well-known (though not all) musicians who decided to record this album after the album cover was made in a Facebook-game. It's a really nice americana-record, with three different lead singers. Check out a live performance of the song at their only gig ever: Track 3: Instant love when I heard the guitar at the beginning, no disappointment either when the vocals and other instruments start! I'm glad you like it :) It's called 'Me & A Lot Like You' and it's by the wonderfully talented (and very young) Dutch singer-songwriter Tim Knol. I only got into him last year through his second album, Days, but this is off his first album. Saw him and his band play live a few months ago; needless to say they were amazing. Track 4: Another instant love track! I listened to this one a couple of times, got it stuck in my mind for hours. It's so "fresh and happy-making" for lack of a better description... I'm so exhausted! :disappointed: That's exactly the same way I feel about this song! It's also the song that got me into his music. This is 'It's Not You It's Me' by Coconut Records, although he is better known as the actor Jason Schwartzman! It's off his first album Nighttiming, which is a really nice collection of different genres. Track 5: This one's more suitable for depressed Sundays at home... my feeling anyways. Not a bad thing at all though. :D I like the brass in it!! This is a song by one of my favorite super-unknown bands: Jesse Quin and the Mets. The song is called 'The Sculptor and the Stone'. Jesse is also the bass player in Keane since 2007. I'm a crazy Keane fan, so expect some more Keane-involvedness to come ;) Track 6: Uiii, more upbeat, it's like... Kasabian meets Bon Jovi in a good way?? I suck at describing. Big time. I don't want to insult the song hehe. It's nice but there are better songs on this mix for me. :) This song is called 'Glow' by Dutch artist Dazzled Kid. I saw him a few months back as well and the concert was absolutely epic. This isn't my favorite song of his, but it's used in a worldwide tv advert so I thought you might know/recognize it. Track 7: This one sounds as if it's older already or just retro? Anyways quite cool song, nice rhythm. I like the strings, can't go wrong with strings in songs hehe. I'd label it as "radio friendly" song. It's definitely not an older song, it was released last year. This is 'No Mercy' by Racoon, which was a really big hit in the Netherlands. Also the most played song on Dutch radio last year, so I guess you're right about the 'radio friendly' thing. Track 8: The Killers!! Does my mixtape-maker have a subscription to Q magazine as well I wonder? I'm not a fan of U2 but I really liked the "Achtung Baby Covered" album, we play it at work, too. :) Haha, yes I do! I've been an avid Q reader for a few years now, and the U2 album was a nice surprise. I don't know a lot of Killers songs (actually, I only know 'Human' and Brandon Flowers' solo song 'Crossfire' well), but I liked this cover a lot. It made me decide that this year, I will start listening to The Killers some more :) Track 9: Milow, second song I knew hehe A colleague at work gave me his album... You picked one of the songs I like. Milow annoyed me big time with this "You and me in my pocket" song. I could rant for a long time about how much the lyrics annoy me but I better let it be, doesn't belong here. 'You and Me (In My Pocket)' would probably go down in my list as most overplayed song on radio ever. Luckily, I don't listen to a lot of radio so I can still stand to listen to it. I quite enjoy Milow's music, though it can get a bit boring if you hear too much of it. Track 10: Another one of those songs that have won already within the first seconds of listening. Very short! Could be from a soundtrack? I'm curious to find out who the female singer is. This is a song by another little-known band with a Keane influence. The band is called Mt. Desolation, and they are basically Tim Rice-Oxley (Keane's piano player/songwriter and main vocalist in this song) and Jesse Quin + friends. The song is called 'Dividing Line' and they are joined here by American singer Lissie, who also sings on Snow Patrols latest album. Not from a soundtrack, but a Communion live album. Track 11: Haha, change of genre. Kaiser Chiefs!!! Makes me remember the great time at Main Square Festival last summer. :heart: We had so much fun during their set. This is off his 2010 EP 'Willow Tree' which was (hey, another one!) produced by Tim Rice-Oxley and Jesse Quin of Keane :P Track 14: I didn't know this song but Keane's sound is pretty easy to recognise, right? I only have a copy of "Hopes and Fears" from my boss. Another song in the category of "floats nicely in the background while working". :) And here we have Keane themselves. This is one of my favorite b-sides, called 'Maybe I Can Change'. Track 15: It always depends on my mood which genre I like, I listen to pretty much everything from Nick Drake to AKA AKA, the whole palette except metal actually... This one fits perfectly to my current mood! It's uplifting with cool lyrics and melody. I like! This is by I Am Arrows, Andy Burrows' current band. He's also known as (previously) Razorlight's drummer and from his Christmas album with Tom Smith from Editors. I really like this album, and it pains me that it's so unknown I couldn't even buy it in the Netherlands so I had to import it from the UK. Track 16: Shit!! I know that band but can't tell which one it is without cheating! I hate that hahaha Cool feel-good song! :dance: One for dancing around in the bathroom while getting ready to go out! Or to dance to without caring what you look like, at 4am in a small club. :lol: I guess that's exactly what The Wombats are going for ;) Again, a band that I only got into last year, this is one of my favorite b-sides called 'Addicted To The Cure'. Track 17: Same category than no. 16! :dance: I love the dialogue between the two singers! Another Keane connection (last one, I promise!) Again, this is Jesse Quin singing, but this time with his wife as the duo The Wedding Guests. They only have two songs, and I like this one the best. Track 18: Mhmm, least favourite song, sorry. :shrug: It's the voice that puts me off the most. I feel like I should know who this is. :thinking: It would really surprise me if you knew who this was, as he's not even well-known here in the Netherlands! His name is Patrick Le Duc, and the song is called 'May We Be'. He has one of those voices that you either love or hate, so it's okay to not like this song :) I got to know Patrick the same way as Handsome Poets: he was a support act for the band I work for. Got to interview him as well, and he's an incredibly nice guy with a great songwriting talent. But again, it's not for everyone. Again, I'm glad you liked it and I'm glad I picked a lot of songs you didn't know. Isn't getting to know new music the best part of this? January 11, 201214 yr Hey mixtape partner, my review's here. Track 1 A great opener. I like both the melody and the vocal a lot. I don’t usually fancy female vocal much, but this one is awesome. Track 2 My favorite track of the mixtape. :awesome: Basically it's a genre of music that I usually listen to. :wacky: Sounds like Butcher the Bar to me. Track 3 Female vocals again. But this is so amazing! I like the voice though, sounds so clear and smooth. The melody is great too. Track 4 Female vocals. It sounds like a female version of Fleet Foxes to me, so yeah, incredible. Track 5 Is this Elbow? I'm pretty sure this is Elbow. A good track, but I wish the knocking sounds weren't there :freak: One of my favorites of the mix too. Track 6 So many instruments coming together, and I actually like the first 30 seconds more than the rest of the song but it’s a pretty good song overall. Track 7 I like how track 6 flows into track 7. I really like this one, reminded me of Fanfarlo with less folky vibes. The choice of instruments is excellent. Track 8 So… Icelandic and… mystical. Reminded me of Joanna Newsom a little. Track 9 Again another great flow from track 8 and track 9. It's quite nice, nevertheless, with falsetto and piano throughout the song. Track 10 I like this one too. Violins, and piano, yeah. Pretty rock-ish. quite different from previous tracks. This isn’t English, is it? :uhoh: :freak: Track 11 Mellower, with guitar. A simple but decent track, I don’t have much to write about it. Track 12 A pretty mediocre female song… Not really my cup of tea, but it’s not a bad track though. Track 13 Acoustic at the beginning before an upbeat rhythm takes over. I like the melody, but I don’t really fancy the voice. Track 14 Good song, love the guitar tone. Sound familiar though. Track 15 I know this one, or at least have heard it before somewhere. I'm eager to know who's this. A good way to end a mixtape. Thanks to whoever made this mixtape, I loved it. Good to hear music that I don't normally listen to. Great job! :nice: Sorry for the shitty reviews though. I suck at writing reviews, I apologize. :disappointed:
