The Muse Thread - Hate This & I'll Hate You

Everything about the album I should hate, it's cheesy, self-indulgent, over the top, it's really crap when you sit and analyse it. If I take it seriously as a piece of art it's fucking rubbish. But like I said, I have embraced the shitness and I actually enjoy listening to it.
Sounds like your critical model doesn't work with the style of music.

i really really want to disagree with you. but to a certain degree you're right. just the way you've stated it makes it sound really bad. muse is cheesy, self indulgent and over the top and if you told the band that they would pretty much agree with you. its not the type of music you sit down and analyse. but i dont see how its cheesy-ness and self indulgence makes it shit?

muse have always reminded me of the chili peppers who are just as cheesy and self indulgent and cannot be taken seriously. but like muse they are briliant musicians so its hard not to appreciate them and enjoy their music.

^well put. Isn't a lot of their charm the very fact that they're so over-the-top?

Over the top? Really? Am I the only person that DOESN'T view the album that way?

But why? It's not that bombastic. If I wanted something like that, I'd go listen to some Stravinsky.

At any rate, even if it were "over-the-top," I don't think it is in a bad way.

^I agree. I do think it's over the top, but I really like it... it grows on me more and more with every listen.

some parts are over the top but overall i love the album, especially resistance intro lol.

I love the Resistance intro too! It's beautifully haunting..

And the teddy-bear thing started when the cover art for the Urprising single was released, and it kinda went from there...

Though that still doesn't explain WHY :p

And I don't find Muse cheesy at all. Over the top, definitely, but not really cheesy at all. Just my opinion :)

dudes!! the album ends with a 3 part 15min symphony!! if that isnt over the top then somebody please show me what is. its called stadium rock for a reason. of course there are some 'normal' moments but overall the album is pretty big. muse are cheesy in a cool fun way not in a rick astley way.

Yeah, it's a symphony. Big deal. I don't see how finding a symphony on a "rock" album makes said album "over-the-top." It's different, yes, but not to the extent of "OMG, WTF is that doing on there?" [Not that you were saying that, just making a point.]

HAHA, Rick Astley. I just got a vision of Matt Bellamy swaying and singing "Never Gonna Give You Up" when I read that. :laugh4:

yeah i agree with you in a way. but i still think its quite OTT (means over the top incase you didnt know) in place and trust me, if there werent any OTT moments on the album i would be complaining because nobody does OTT rock like muse.

so just to make it clear. im not saying the album as a whole is OTT just there are certain moments in the album which are. just like every previous muse album. but the 15mins symphony has sort of taken it to a new level.

You know, you make a good point when you put it that way. Like the "Mon Coeur S'ouvre A Ta Voix" thing.

Y'all watch BBC Two tonight at 0:40 UK time (or 1:40 CET), mmkay?

Oh, and Later... before that too.

I love the new video, despite the fact that those are the FREAKIEST looking teddies i've ever seen! :shocked2::laugh3:

Does anyone here actually like unnatural selection? I fucking love it and everyone here is just bashing the shit out of it.

I do, yes. Granted, there's that slow section in there, and I don't quite get how that fits in with the rest of the song. However, I love the song in general. The bit about the ocean is my favorite part of the song. :)

cant say i've ever seen matt play a keytar....

^^ Can't YouTube now, but that looks awesome!

especially resistance intro lol.

+1.

Urprising single[/url] was released, and it kinda went from there...

Though that still doesn't explain WHY :p

“We’d like to do something with the teddies, definitely,” Bellamy giggles. “The idea is to have this large group of them staging an uprising, causing chaos; on a protest march outside parliament, that sort of thing. I’ve always found that side of human psychology fascinating; the way that we project our emotions onto things such as pets, toys, objects. So a large group of toy bears forming a sinister teddy uprising might be interesting.”

Yeah, that totally makes sense, Matt!

Have you seen the Live from Teignmouth gig?

I think it's called A Seaside Rendezvous.

That was recorded before the Jools Holland performance I think.

Matt looked epic on keytar. :D

Sure, they've done it before... But I praise 'the best live band in the world' for taking the piss when being asked to playback in a TV show.
