Mitt Romney speaks French

Shock, horreur! Mitt Romney speaks French, says Newt

Gingrich calls out Massachusetts governor for disturbing ability to speak in foreign tongue

2012-01-13 16:25

SO FAR during his bid to win the Republican nomination at this year’s US election, Newt Gingrich has made videos questioning Mitt Romney‘s business ethics, his gambling habits and even his attitude to dog ownership.

Now Gingrich is going for the jugular. His latest video points out that Romney would be a bad bet because… he speaks French.

Ever since French fries were renamed Freedom fries after French opposition to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, being “French” has been seen as a negative in some quarters of US society.

This isn’t even the first time fluency in the language has been used against a Massachusetts governor. During the 2008 campaign John Kerry was criticised for his ability to speak it and being seen as too French quickly became a millstone around his neck.

Gingrich doesn’t only attack Romney for his Gallic leanings – he also raises his past associations with the Democrats and his support for the right to an abortion.

:shame: Hate a politician because he speaks French, it's quite really stupid

Ridiculous.

I came to think that the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France. But maybe their next move will be to get rid of Miss Liberty.

I heard about this... how stupid. As if speaking French should decide whether or not you're suitable to be president.

Of course there are some people that think that is a legit deciding factor though...

What do you expect? Gingrich is desperate and running out of time to get enough supporters to win South Carolina.

His big strategy was attacking Romney for his involvement in Bain but that backfired tremendously. It's never a good sign when powerful figures among the GOP base like Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove and Jim DeMint are publicly calling you out. To no surprise, Gingrich has now pulled back some of the punches and admitted he crossed a line with the attacks.

All of the backlash would have been worth if it meant a surge of support for Gingrich but at the very most, he picked up a percentage point these past couple of days. He's still second in South Carolina behind Romney. Gingrich knows if he also loses South Carolina to Romney, the GOP primary is effectively over.

That was just hilarious, it's like John Stewart made it.

But only hilarious for a moment, it's actually incredibly depressing. You think of the amount of thought they put into this promo videos, and to go ahead and just say "He speaks French!" without any explanation as to why that's wrong, when actually being fluent in another language should be a positive instead of a negative... well you could just pick a million holes into how wrong this is.

 It really is

How come speaking another language could be negative ? And French is a pretty complicated language...if anything, it would show this guy can be quite determined

:phu:

btw, I watched the video and it looks like something made for some satirical tv show or something, you know ?:lol:

I really don't understand why speaking in french is bad. On the contrary, it is a way to better communicate with french countries. Gingrich is stupid.

The way of thinking of Gingrich made the opinion of some people adversely towards americans. It's quite sad too.

I think it's just hilarious, as though being worldly wise and cultured is somehow un-American?:laugh3: Mitt Romney speaks French! Oui, c'est merveilleux!!

But Romney's business ethics speak for themselves: Robert Reich (The Bain of Capitalism)

Americans associate France (for better or for worse) with condescension and socialism, so naturally it's politically unfavorable to speak French here.

Just like it would be politically unfavorable to speak French if you were a German politician. :P

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize Mitt Romney, but this isn't one of them.

:shocked2: wow this is stupidity taken to a whole new level

Lol, it's just like how Jon Huntsman basically signed his defeat (not that he ever stood a chance, really) the moment he spoke in Chinese. And he was the Ambassador to China, you'd think that even the most ignorant people would see how essential it is that he know how to speak it.....

Most German politicians can speak a fair amount of French and vice versa. No one cares.

I don't think the French have a very good international reputation, particularly in Germany with the Euro crisis. The Euro and EU were very much French-led projects.

It's sort of a point of humor among the British and other nations that the French have a sort of an undeserved superiority complex.

Anyway, my point is that this thread seems to be a circlejerk for people who hate Americans. And don't get me wrong, I think there are a lot of problems with Americans and their government. But I don't think we're unique in this regard.

I've just gone through and re-read every post in this thread and not one post has any sort of implications toward hating Americans. I suggest you do the same.

People are laughing at Gingrich and how desperate and petty his attack was. At most, people are laughing at how petty the US political sphere is.

No one is hating on Americans and I doubt anyone in this thread hates over 300 million people.

Kiame, I noticed a lot of posts by people in other countries, and Nancy's first response seemed to be referencing all Americans.

I explained why Americans hold a negative view of the French, and pointed out that other nations often share our views on the French and other countries.

All nations' political spheres are "petty" and arbitrary. This is hardly unique.

Here are Mitt Romney's top campaign contributors, which is far more troubling than his ability to speak French:

Ahh the patriot with the Liechtenstein flag.

Has anyone ever told you to just shut the fuck up and die? Just wondering, it's an innocent question.

Ah, the guy with thirty-three thousand posts and no life.

No need for you to die, nobody would miss you anyway.

That doesn't even make any sense you moron! Great comeback.

Anyway your contribution of saying the replies are anti-American are just as random and irrational as you always are, there's a million fucked up ways your mind decides to perceive things and then you pick the worst one. Go buy some logic and sense, something's missing in that noggin of yours other then detachment of sensitivity.

I do not hate Americans  I hate the way of thinking of Gingrich.

I really think it's ridiculous that we now feel the need to start defending our views of America as a whole because of these fucked up allegations from one sad and lonely individual.

 I totally agree

Hahaha! I wanted to see if you'd pick up on the 'sad and lonely', because Psychological Projection is exactly what you have and why you brought up the idea that nobody would miss me if I was dead, despite knowing nothing about me. Now I don't know anything about you so I don't know if you noticed but one thing I don't do on here is make presumptions out of absolutely nothing, but simple and bitter people always hate in others what they hate about themselves, in this situation you've just created a trait in me that you want to hate because you hate your own life.

Now please explain how what you did, initially saying I have an unfulfilled personal life, is NOT psychological projection, because I felt it's very strange for you to bring that up despite you not having a clue. Then when I mentioned the words 'sad and lonely' and you've now taken an instant issue there, you let being called a moron go, your views/logic being fucked up, that doesnt matter- but SAD AND LONELY?! It clearly hits you very close to the heart.

I know you think you are super intelligent, for all I know you might be, but psychologically you wear your heart on your sleeve and you aren't the hardest person to work out. A bit like a child.

Boohoo us poor Americans :(
