The era of the B-Side

Featured Replies

Does anyone else think that the era of the B-Side has been succeeded by that of the EP?

I hope so, I like physical things better ;) Seriously though I would prefer an EP, which due to the lack of B-sides I believe we will get, then again I've been wrong before :\

But it's easier to get an EP

How true

I also feel like the way EP's are framed makes the obscure B-side analogues more accessible. I would argue many more people know about Glass of Water, PFFA, Moving to Mars, and Major Minus than most B-sides.

I would agree with this, seeing how the Viva era went and how this era is shaping up to be. I can't say which method I prefer (as long as I get the same amount of songs, of course), though.

That's a good point. Plus, I can't see Glass Of Water or Life In Technicolor II being 'traditional' b-sides to any song. GoW is good enough to be a single by itself!

good point! The bands have more opportunity to release songs that would have been opening tracks, etc. while in the past they had to have a "b side sound" if you know what I mean. I like b sides and EPs both though, as long as I get some new tunes! Both are a great way to reward loyal fans.

I just hate the way record companies complain about falling single sales when the nearest music/video shop (HMV) where I live is 20 miles away- and they don't even stock singles! >:( But I love both B-Sides and EPs too. Coldplay's B-Sides are ALWAYS awesome- The Goldrush, I Ran Away, For You, A Spell A Rebel Yell, Crest Of Waves, One I Love... etc. :)

Not necessarily. A lot of EPs are just as hard to come by as singles.

B-sides are more often songs that weren't good enough, or didn't fit with any LP. E.P.'s are releases longer than a single, but shorter than most LP's. I don't see what one has to do with the other.

Yes, but most of the songs that weren't good enough or didn't fit with VLV (or weren't finished) ended up on Prospekt's March EP, while there were relatively few actual B-Sides during that era. So it could be seen that the band are reducing the amount of B-Sides they release and instead putting those songs on an EP.

Oh, so its with exclusive regard to coldplay. Gotcha. For some reason I thought I was in a different part of the forum.

Until this time, MX era just have MTM (Major Minus not counted), and there's no itunes bonus track, so it's very likely they'll have longer EP... or B-sides album everyone? Mylo Xyloto's younger brother everyone? :wink3:

Counting there are 6-8 Viva era's non-LP songs (plus 3-4 mix of LP songs) it's quite possible to make a minor LP..

^Indeed - if say, there were 5 singles and each had a B-side. And then throw in a couple things and you have an EP. HOPEFULLY.

So there are still no b-sides from MX? Unbelievable.

EPs are better for my OCD.

Also, widespread use of B-sides died along with rock and roll.

Today it's just a digital download, possibly a CD single with a bunch of useless remixes.
