Discuss: Charlie Brown single

Featured Replies

we're on to a winner with the idea of an EP.

I love MX concept and atmosphere and it would be great to find out new songs related to this universe.

I really don't know where people are getting this idea that "Charlie Brown" would have been MX's "Yellow" if released earlier, or that people are emotionally distraught about the first two singles getting more exposure, or that CB is less of a "pop" song than others on the album, or that people are treating CB like it's the greatest song of all time. Yes, I concede that it's infinitely better than ETIAW or Parrot Dies, but that doesn't mean it's anywhere close to the best thing they've written. Or that it's not a pop song, because it totally is. It may be a better pop song than its MX counterparts, but it's about as blatant of a pop track as you can get.

Yellow is a blatant pop track too though. So are In My Place, Clocks, Speed of Sound etc. etc. The point is (as you seem to concede yourself), that Charlie Brown is generally considered a stronger song than the other two. To a fair number of people, it is up there with the band's strongest songs ever. That's where the idea comes from:rolleyes:

I never said they weren't pop tracks. Coldplay is a pop band, after all, but people are pretending they aren't.

The way you phrased it made it seem to me like you did. My mistake.

Yes, I hate it when Coldplay fans deny the fact that they are a pop band. Pop doesn't mean bad people!

Well they are a pop band, so were the beatles. But they can rock too, Violet Hill IS a rock song, for exemple. It's just that the idea of pop usually bring us to mind either the New Kids On The Block or Madonna, it's not like that.

I couldn't agree more

Pop or not, the two songs do sound different.

Charlie brown is a guitar-laden pop song with creative and unique lyrics. Princess of China is a synth-heavy pop song with semi-generic lyrics. The former sounds like something you'd hear on the charts in the late 90's-early 00's, the latter something you'd hear today. Of course PoC is going to do better; as if that's a surprise. It sounds like every single other song on the radio. That's so hard to accomplish...

^ It does not sound like other things on the radio, it has a much better melody than 90% of the charts. Also, if look at it it both songs lack the main essential thing of a hit song, a catchy chorous, both have a very good riff but don't have even a propper chorus, I think PoC will do better than CB, but not a number 1.

It is devoid of hip-hop elements, but in other ways it does. All of the songs i hear are built on heavy synth-sounds and that's exactly what this song is like. And they have a featured popular artist, which is also very common in the mainstream today.

And it's as if there's no guitar sounds and a very noticeable bass. Again- common sir.

^ I don't mind to use synths, if you use it right they can sound awesome. And PoC does have guitar, acoustic and eletric on the first part Rihanna sings. About the collaboration, I don't like it, that's really common these days.
