Anyway, this article is a nice try. But I have to say, as much as I agree with some of it, I don't think all of this is true.

I think it just boils down to how many people have heard of Coldplay. I mean, how are you gonna hate a band that you've never even heard of? Whether you like them or not, you've probably heard of Coldplay (them being such a global band) and as a result you've heard at least one of their songs. And that's where the hate it or love it decision is made. But again, if you've never been exposed to a band's music, you won't even get to the judging phase. As a Coldplay fan though, whether someone else likes them or not doesn't affect my choice.

I think the piece is well written, mostly fair, and does have a few valid points.

 

However, I still say most of the stick they get is generated by that fact that people continue to assume Coldplay is trying to do something other than what they're actually doing.

 

Coldplay pretty much admits they just like to write and play pop music people enjoy. Judged soley by that standard, they are an unqualified success. Why do people assume they're trying to be "revolutionary" or break musical bounderies. Not every band is going after that, and I don't think that's Coldplay's goal. They just want to play yellow and make crowds of people smile by doing so.:)

Wow. Did not agree with any of it.

I'm fine with people disliking Coldplay, because I get that they're not everyone's cup of tea. My irritation lies though with people thinking they make sleepy music. Parachutes is the only album where all the songs are pretty mellow, in my opinion.

 

I've found that people who attend a live show seem to change their opinion and realize that Coldplay don't just sit around and sing slow songs the whole time.

Can't say I liked that at all...though at least he tried...

I'll admit too, that the article makes some sense at few points, but when the fog clears up, the reality is that not everyone can be pleased. I noticed the author attacked their lack of change, or lack of strength in instigating a new age or whatever, but that's what makes Coldplay so individualized, the fact that they found something that works, and continue to build upon it. Comparing them to other successful bands that did something different only shows their individuality, and the fantastic thing is that it works! If that shows weakness or plainness, this guy must be nuts. If it aint broke, don't fix it...

I totally agree.. Anyone who has been to a Coldplay concert knows the band just wants the audience to feel free and uplifted by their lyrics and melodies. They never claim to be the next Hendrix or Dylan and it's unfair for critics to compare them to such icons when reaching that level is not their main focus. I think Coldplay should just focus on the fans (and yes, there are many of us) that love their music and dismiss all of the negativity.. I mean really, who has time for all of that bull$&!@ anyway?

Well agreed with that. But not all of it.

What people always seem to forget is that they're an amazing LIVE band. Isn't that the most important thing to judge an artist by: their concerts?

 

Even if you think Coldplay's music sucks, you are a pretty heartless person if you don't at least like them live. That's something people have to give them credit for.

His argument is weak. All I got out of this article was that he is disappointed in that fact of what Coldplay should have or could have been. Like they could have been the next Led Zeppelin, but decided to take the pop route, which some how makes them inferior.

 

The whole part of how the don't write great music because Chris Martin is not being challenged by his bandmates, made me laugh.

If A Rush of Blood to the Heart didn't make him happy, he should try Viva la Diva or something...

I have doubts the author of that article has actually heard a Coldplay song. He also seems to know absolutely nothing about how the band works. It's not a 'one-man band' at all. Yes, Chris is the main songwriter but the band would be nothing without Will, Jonny and Guy. It's well known that Will is highly critical of what the band puts out and only lets the very best songs get through.

 

What a horrible article. No research whatsoever.
