Why does homophobia exist?

Featured Replies

^ Put yourself in his position, he was taught all his life he had to marry someone and have kids and that being gay is an abomination. Than he finds a girl that he loves, he thinks he might never have another chance to have a "normal" life and so he marrys her and have kids, than after some years he realizes he can't live that way anymore. I can totally get why he did that.

Did you know, that the old testament has been proved quite hisorically accurate. And told you, I'm not trying to convince you guys of anything, I'm trying to explain what I believe and why.

Why can't you answer a simple question about Leviticus? You are treating his word as the word of God, that's a sin. You are taking what he said, NOT God, as literal.

You just changed the topic, into something incredibly ridiculous, how the fuck do people like you not think things through for yourselves? You need to believe in a silly little book and take things from it literally because you don't know what else to do. You're absolutely brainwashed.

I understand that, but, first, why setting that rule ? It's fine that you personally don't question that rule, but I feel the need to, if I want to understand the whole thing. And then again, how am I supposed to trust that Levicitus guy, as from Imke has quoted, he's clearly influenced by his society and most importantly, and there is something very wrong in that (and it's why I got distant with the Church), it seems to me that he used the opportunity of sharing a message of God not to actually do that but to give us his personal views on things that I don't think God actually cares about (the length of the hair for instance, come on), and impose his own idea of how society should be. If I read the Bible, I don't care of how he thinks society should be, I care about what God and Jesus think, you know?

Aaaaand Propsector said exactly what I think. Thank you.

Lots of this was to set apart the Jews from everyone else around them, and some were probably to protect them. Protect them from deseases caused by something or another. And some, I believe are an "abomination" to God. But seriously, I'm too tired to try to explain what little I know.

This debate makes me fall in love with my avatar all over again.

Put yourself in position of the kids and the woman who married a gay...And he married just to hide his homosexuality. I can't understand that. If you are gay, assume you, that's it. I don't want to be rude, but I can't stand man who act like that.

Thank you. God bless you. Good bye.

Well you couldn't answer the question could you? You can disappear, avoid it, but it's still there for you to think about.

I live in this state we call "Texas". Gay marriage isn't allowed, and I doubt that it will ever be allowed because we always end up being a Republican state after every presidential election (4 years). It really pisses me off to know that. My oldest brother is gay and he came out to me about three years ago. Obviously, I still love him, because no matter what, he's family. The only problem I have with that is my dad's family knowing, because they're Christians. I can just imagine one of my uncles being a complete dick to my brother, and a whole argument will spark about it within the family. If you want my pure honesty, I think that religion's among the main reason why this thing we call "homophobia" exists. It's sad, really, and I hate seeing people act all homophobic, too. That pisses me off so much, you can't imagine the hate I feel for them. If only I can understand why homophobes truly exist.

I'm catholic, but I don't practice anymore. I didn't enter in a Church since 11 years. So, what God say about gay, to me, it's totally a joke. In Canada, gay marriage is allowed. That's fine, I didn't have problem with it. There's only one thing I can't stand about gay, it's gay who hide behind woman. I mean, some man who don't assume their and hide it with marrying woman, have kids etc and than 15 years later, finally decide to assume his homosexuality. That totally piss me off. I know a friend who lived that, and it's was very hard for her.

Please tell me you're French Canadian or an immigrant, or anything that says English isn't your first language.

So now we can eat shrimps, lobster and whatnot (even though they're an abomination) because there are no longer any health risks. Gays are still an abomination though and always will be, because an abomination is an abomination and will always be an abomination.

You can't just selectively bend some rules to modern society and then still stick with others that are just as ancient.

You can't ever really have a debate about it though because of how with religion it's 100% belief, any doubt whatsoever is bad and it's this that causes homophobia.

You just love to attack me. Look at everything you believe. If you have a logical answer for everything you believe, then we can talk. I wasn't trying to attack anyone, I was showing what I believe. You're right about one thing, I don't have the answer, but that's why I have faith. I don't need everything to be explained. What are you trying to do? Make me feel like trash? Well whatever you're trying to do, it's not working. I'm still joyful. :D

So, you're talking about the...uh..sociological and historical role of the old testament, in a way, right ?

Well, to me, this aspect (and therefore what was said to fulfill that particular role) can't be applied to today's world, because it was made at and for another time. If Levicitus' contribution was in that matter, and it appears to be the case, then I just can't take what he said seriously, as someone who lives in the 21th century. Therefore I don't really care if Levicitus said God is against same-sex marriage. If someone else, someone whose main contribution wasn't like Levicitus', said that God said to Moses that 2 men shouldn't be together, then I may believe it. Maybe.

Also, I'm curious, we're talking about 2 men here, but does the Bible mention love between 2 women ? :surprised:

Well, as a Christian, I believe God created man and he then created the woman for the the man. He did not create 2 men or 2 woman, but 1 man and 1 woman. He intended men to marry women, or he would have made everyone the same. So, in being homosexual, you are going agaisnt what God intended. And it also says things throughout the Bible about it being wrong. I don't know, but have I seemed "homophobic" or "intolerant" to you guys? I'm wondering, because the vast majority of people I know have the same opinion as me, and are about as "homophobic" as I am. I can be around you, I can be friends with you, but I will not pretend to think it's right or support it.

Well, if that explains my views a bit better.

Do you think that you would be fully accepting of gays if the bible didn't say anything about it?

or do you think even if the bible said nothing about gay people, you would still feel that it is not correct.

I wouldn't have to attack if you simply answered the question instead of avoiding it, you said that Leviticus said the Lord spoke to Moses, you don't have an answer as to why we should believe what Leviticus said, you treated his word as the word of God and an ultimate truth which it isn't- it's the word of Leviticus. You lied, and you avoided this lie, how am I supposed to treat you? You should apologise.

I just wanted a simple answer to a simple question and you couldn't provide this, your own insecurity lays within the fact you tried to avoid it, and now you're admitting what you said has no meaning behind it and is therefore false.

Please tell me you're French Canadian or an immigrant, or anything that says English isn't your first language.

French it's my first language, I'm from Quebec, it's written just under my avatar. Sorry if my english speaking is bad to you :shifty:

It's not true that Catholic Church is homophobic

Nobody is questioning your faith. What we are questioning is what you make of the Bible and how you take some parts literally that fit with "your beliefs" and ignore others that apparently don't.

I don't even know what to answer anymore. People trying to get me to answer hard, confusing questions and then attacking me when I can't figure out how to answer it, make it even harder. I don't know all the answers, but I could go to someone older and wiser than me and see what their thoughts are. But again, on this forum, I shouldn't expect anyone to have the same views as I do, and should expect that if I say something, I will be attacked by someone. Not by you, but by others...

Go ask whoever you know that's older and wiser, why they treat Leviticus' word as the word of God, and how this is worthy of bearing a false idol. There, not confusing.

I am not doing that! But please don't expect a 16 year old girl to be able to answer these questions. I was never on here to try to convince anyone that I was right...

You are constantly avoiding the questions concerning Leviticus though.

Let me ask one simple question: Do you wear clothes that are made of different materials and do you eat shrimps, lobsters etc.?

Go ask whoever you know that's older and wiser, why they treat Leviticus' word as the word of God, and how this is worthy of bearing a false idol. There, not confusing.

Really, can't you just stop it already. Man, you should be careful what you say.

But I thought you would be joyful nomatter what. :D

You don't like the truth.

^ OK Reilly, we got your point... give her some space, she doesn't have to answer if she doesn't want to.
