Has anyone from the band (or on behalf of the band) actually said what Los Unidades even is, like the reason for releasing music under that name? As far as I'm aware none of them have even acknowledged Los Unidades actually exists!

No, if I remember correctly the band or any official sources from around the band never even acknowledged they are in fact Los Unidades.
