Howdy!

 

I was wondering if any of you great people have done the unimaginable and given thought to or read-up on Hinduism, or asked a Hindu about his/her belief system, etc.

 

I know how it goes in the schools...and even the books don't do proper justice to that religion.

 

But, if you have done your own reading or wondered about it, I'd really like to know your thoughts on it.

 

 

I'm not doing this to "convert" anyone. I just am trying to help myself understand others so it would be cool to get your perspective on Hinduism.

 

 

I don't expect a whole lot of replies (perhaps one, from Carla! haha), but I'd really really appreciate if you do have anything to share.

I don't really know too much either...I sometimes get it mixed up with the Muslim religion...do you guys feel that animals are sacred?

I pretty much don't know that much about Hinduism. Well, pretty much nothing. :/ There was this one girl I knew who was Indian (perhaps Hindu?) .. and the only thing I heard from her was that she wasn't supposed to eat meat? (But she did sometimes, anyways).

But I would be interested in learning more about it.

That and Buddhism.

ermm yeah, Hindus hold all living things sacred, not just "holy cow", so yeah, that's why it is ethically proper to be vegetarian for a Hindu.

 

and, umm... Michella, sorry to hear about your family history; you can still learn more about Hinduism on your own or get someone's help if you're interested. Nobody gets 'converted' into HInduism as such; you just become one if you follow its core beliefs, which are basically humanitarian.

 

I"ll post stuff on it if you guys would like it, specially Soleil and others who've shown interest.

 

I asked the question 'cuz someone else asked me to recommend to them any good books on Hinduism...and I was like...hmmm I dunno! LOL

 

we Hindus are pretty quiet about our own religion, so even if you guys have asked or if you have friends who are Hindu, they're probably too shy to tell you too much about it...so don't take it as an offense. :cool:

Last year I did a work about The Six Day War and I read a lot about Judaism, and on the same I was reading, there was a whole section about Hinduism, so I read quite a lot.

 

About the religion itself, I don't know much (btw, how did you knew I would reply?) I know the typical about the scared things and some "festivals". Ad thats about it... well If you ask I asnwer and remember, it's not much what I can tell just by the fun of it. What I do know quite a lot about is Art and Cookery. I remember reading a lot about the Indian markets and the species you find there, typical foods, religious foods, and pictures, painting, photographs about India... that yes.

 

I go t a hop where they sell Indian clothes, which is what I go to buy, and I've seen many painting and like ... I don't know how you call them in englis, but they are beautiful... it's a sort of painting.

 

I know Budhaism comes from Budha and Hinduism from the Hindus.... and well, it's not much what I can tell If you don't ask me!

well Michella, it's not a bad thing. But I do know that many many Hindus got converted in the past (and even now) due to other reasons, and not simply because they found one faith to be clearly better than their own (Hinduism). It's not anything against you, as such, so don't take it personally.

 

and Reilly, yeah, it's really up to you. That's the good thing about Hinduism and it's belief of karma and reincarnation. You should do what you think is best, and if you're alright with squishing a bug or killing a fly, so be it. It's your karma. It's the same as the Golden Rule: you will reap as you sow.

ah! I know is the oldest religion in the world, though Judaism is the oldest monogemous religion (just one god). Though many Hindus say that their religion doesn't have many godness/gods; it's just they have like "saints" to adore them, compared with the Christians there.

i don't really know anything about hinduism :confused: then again, i'm not a religious person at all :idea2:

Carla, Hindus believe in only one God, but Hindus accept and pray to God by all his various names/manifestations, and Hindus state that "God is one, sages pray to him using different names." Thus, Hinduism accepts validity of all other world religions as equally true.

 

Michella, no, that's not what I meant. Many poor Hindus get converted due to allurement offered by organized missionaries of various other religions, and/or to escape the wretched caste system prevalent within Hinduism. Other Hindus in the past converted to Islam at the tip of Muslim invaders' swords. That's history. There's nothing to do with "westernization." In fact, Indian Christianity is said to be older than that of Europe; first Christians settled in South India after being persecuted in Roman empire.

and yes, i totally agree with that. and i've got experience to testify that a phone call or a personal talk is definitely better than something just online... lol

 

but this is a fun place to be, and hopefully people don't get confused/misunderstood too often! lol
