Unfortunately, while this stuff is generally pretty harmless, It belongs more in boyband circles (As pointed out, it's more of a form of religion for teeniebopper "Directioners" than a fandom) This is a natural by-product of Coldplay's more mainstream and pop-oriented direction. I think this sort of stuff is rather unbecoming for a rock band who are fast approaching their 40's But alas Chris has found the new fans he has wanted.

You need a good mixture of both (Yin and Yang and all that ;) ) In general though, Coldplay do melancholy exquisitely, That's what made their early work so great. Sad songs with a rock edge. To me if someone said "Upbeat" Coldplay that would signify MX/ASFOS. In terms of their upbeat work, I much prefer the Viva era. LiJ, LiTii, The Goldrush. The piano bridge in Politik vs The guitar solo in Violet Hill
