  1. Rose a baddie? Goodness. The thought had never even occurred to me. They better not. (From some certain spoilers I've heard she certainly isn't.) The writers seem to understand what she's come to mean to some people- I don't see how they could be that cruel. A lot of people (myself included) are sort of emotionally attached to her the same way older fans talk about being attached to their first Doctor- guess it happened to us first-time fans because Eccleston left so soon.
  2. Hmm... interesting. And yeah, thanks for the Violet Hill tidbits before... they kept me sane even with the (former) uncertainty. :nice:
  3. It's British. Comes out every week. And expensive in North America. :(
  4. Neato! :D Glad there was lots of song love in that poll. Heh... I've been so used to Coldplay being away for so long that I've gotten used to us being ignored. Guess we'll have to remember just how much of a fishbowl this place can be... especially now that this will probably be the main go-to board when the media wants random quotes. It happens :stunned:
  5. ^Some bookstores have it. It's worth a look in any place with a bigger than usual magazine section. Not surprised about the AF inspiration. Chris is obsessed. They certainly seemed to inspire the playing from the balcony stunts on tour in South America. And they're Canadian :nice:
  6. Very weird... it was just talking. I don't see how they have any right to take it down at all. Unless it's their way of trying to control the media campaign. Heh, maybe it was some jerk contacting youtube posing as EMI for a laugh... *shrug*
  7. It makes me think of a lot of all the old folk songs I used to learn as a kid. Something about the structure and the mood and the chorus and things. It's why I like it. I'll see if I can dig up one...
  8. Know the feeling. I love music, I love trying to write it, and since I can't really play or sing I've ended up focusing on how it works. But even then I have to sit down and figure every little thing out since I can't do it in my head. Drives me around the bend. :(:laugh3:
  9. Wow, I come back and this thread has ballooned. :dizzy: It's giving me a headache. But in a good way. Glad you're around to bring a little bit of experience to it all, Tracie. I like having a good discussion about theory too. Learning alot just from the way all the different people approach it. And it's bringing back alot too. Pity about the slagging. I haven't seen a good theory discussion like this ... well, probably ever around here. But sorry to bring up the minor key kurfuffle again, aren't there 3 distinct types of minor keys? And doesn't one of them shift the 6th and 7th notes depending on whether you're going up or down? Can't remember the name. But yes, I was taught to assume natural minor as well.
  10. Giving away the first single was huge of you, and I'm incredibly grateful. I can't fathom the logistics that must have gone into it, but I can tell you it made my day! (week...month) And I know that however much of the inevitable squabbling is happening around here (go figure) most everyone is grateful too. It's great to have you back! :nice:
  11. Ok, I took your advice. I got out the keyboard and played a C#m chord with a D#. So now that I can see it on a keyboard to work out what the chord is actually called, it's a C#m add 9 As in a real proper chord. A real proper chord that Chris uses all the time when he's playing the piano or guitar. Like, I actually associate that chord with him specifically having worked out other Coldplay songs on the piano. Yes, it's one of the odder sounding ones, but it's a personal favorite, actually. I love it. That slight bit of dissonance really makes it pop in a good way. If you're having trouble getting it to sound right on a keyboard, don't play the D# in the same octave as the rest of the chord, play it an octave higher (thus the add 9 part). And speaking as someone who has studied songwriting not just general theory or voice lessons, it sounds way better as a D# than an E.
  12. Having heard it now, I just have to say (again) Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
  13. Dude, I have a short attention span, and have studied lots of different things over the years as a result of that. Classic jack of all trades type. So I understand what you're getting at, because I've seen it over and over. It's like a thumbtack in your ear, and no matter how hard you try to ignore it or accept it or anything, it's still there poking you screaming out "I'm wrong!". When I studied photography, I couldn't look at amateur snapshots for a longtime. They were so profoundly wrong. When I studied graphic design I would grumble about how terribly laid out certain low budget magazines were, and even how a few of the glossies made the occasional big mistake. As soon as I seriously started learning music theory I started noticing bits that no one who knew anything would do. The thing is, it will pass, if you let it. It involves a great deal of humble pie (at least in my case) when I realized there were concepts in play beyond what I was familiar with, and it mean learning to appreciate willful naivety- how it can actually improve something and how hard some people with training try to get back to that state, because things- important things- get lost when the rules are followed. For me learning about music meant learning about the rules, and then learning about all the other rules I had never heard of and all the genres that break them on purpose - things like dissonance and alternative scales as people have mentioned. It's like there is your basic rules, and then all the other rules get bent to encompass all the other things. And things rooted in blues and folk are not mathematical- they came from a completely different background and culture than classical or 'art' type music. They were based around things like African chromatic scales. So every note can be right. That's why you can swing notes around in rock and still have the correct timing, even though 'classical' training would tell you otherwise. That's why in the past many people have thought of it as the "devil's music" because of the way it seemed to break all the rules western music had built up over the centuries. I'm sure Brian Eno noticed. I don't think he thought it was 'wrong'. In fact, I bet you he was the one who encouraged Chris to sing like that.
  14. But the way he's belting it out, like he's playing a character, one who doesn't necessarily have any training, it fits that perfectly. I just said it in another thread, it sounds like it's a song sung by a soldier from a past era, and in my experience, they sing like that. Rules in things like music were made to be bent and broken- they give you a starting point, and then you can manipulate them for dramatic effect.
  15. It's taking me a bit to get my head around it it's so different, but it's good different. I love how it sort of sounds like it came out of a different time and world, like they wrote it about some soldier long ago. Reminds me of some of the old war torn folk songs that are still floating around here if you know where to look.
  16. Not to be rude, but so? :dozey: It sounds like it was on purpose to me. And I like it. And I've studied plenty of theory.
  17. Heh... and Chris still babbles :laugh3: :nice:
  18. It's different for sure............. *dies*
  19. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE CHRIS ON RADIO 1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  20. I am. They're playing it at the same time as everyone else. Ooh, just said it again- 10 MINUTES!!!!!!!
  21. I've been switching back and forth between radio 1 and 6... both are playing it at exactly the same time - 12:15, so they can both claim the exclusive.
  22. Good grief... I try to make one post and a page and a half has passed. Can't keep up with you gumflappers...
  23. May not matter- 6 Music is apparently airing it at 12:15 BST on the dot, the same time the download goes live: http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/news/20080429_coldplay.shtml So I'm thinking that radio 1 and 6 are airing it simultaneously. But I could be wrong.
  24. It was released last summer here. Don't know if it's been released in Austrailia, but it shouldn't be too hard to get ahold of. ....how on earth have you heard of them? Briggins?
