  1. :flutterby: :flutterby: :flutterby: FLUTTERBYS! :flutterby: :flutterby: :flutterby: The whole thing came at a funny point in my life... right at the beginning of a big sea change. Suddenly there was a big burst of colour and life and joy like an omen of things to come for me. I guess it will always be somewhat intertwined with this point in my life. ...Which kind of means it isn't over yet, is it? :D VIVA indeed!   :escaping3:
  2. They're probably either still figuring out where to go with it, or else changing everything in pieces. It would have taken a lot of work to put the old site together. It will take a lot of work to do a new version of it all... and they probably have something up their sleeve they're waiting for... I think it's supposed to be like the timeline was last time between albums- a neutral interim design.
  3. Hey look... it's still September. :hat:
  4. Hmm... :\ That was quick. I miss it being all happy and full of colour already... Did anyone actually save a copy of the great big viva logo on the front page? I never even thought of it and now I wish I had...
  5. Spamming much? :dozey:
  6. Sounds like your critical model doesn't work with the style of music.
  7. Yep, Canada can't be the only place like this: http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2009/09/14/payday-to-payday-problems.html [quote=CBC 59% of Canadians live payday to payday Last Updated: Monday, September 14, 2009 | 2:18 PM ET Comments238Recommend137 CBC News Nearly 60 per cent of Canadians would have trouble paying the bills if their paycheque were delayed by one week, a nationwide survey suggests. The Canadian Payroll Association survey released Monday found that not only were 59 per cent of respondents living paycheque to paycheque, but they had little ability to put money away for their retirement. "We were shocked by that number," CPA chairman Janice MacLellan said. "So many Canadians are now living so close to the line that if they miss a single paycheque, the majority will find themselves in financial difficulty." Financial experts recommend that people should have emergency funds to cover about three months of expenses, such as rent, mortgage, utilities, other bill payments and groceries. Of those surveyed, the younger workforce said they felt the greatest pinch. Forty-five per cent of people aged 18 to 34 said it would be difficult or very difficult to make ends meet if a paycheque were delayed, with a further 21 per cent saying it would be somewhat difficult. Single parents were in the most precarious situation, with 72 per cent saying they would have some trouble making ends meet. The survey also found that 50 per cent of workers couldn't save more than five per cent of their net pay for retirement — half the amount financial experts generally recommend. About one-third of respondents said they've been trying to save more money than a year ago because of the economic uncertainty, but have been unable to do so. Another 42 per cent said they weren't trying to save more. When it comes to remuneration, 65 per cent of employees said higher wages were most important to them, while 25 per cent cited better health benefits and 10 per cent preferred education funding. Asked what they would do with a $1 million lottery win, 70 per cent of people said their top priority would be to pay off debt, while 35 per cent would put as much as possible toward retirement. Surprisingly, not many people would have a celebration. Just three per cent of Canadians said they would use some of their winnings to throw a party, with Quebecers — at seven per cent — a bit more likely to do so. And if you're a relative of a lottery winner, don't count too heavily on getting a share. Just 26 per cent of Canadians said they would give some of their winnings to family members. The CPA survey involved more than 2,800 employees across Canada. The results are considered to have a margin of error of 2.3 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
  8. Now THAT was a classic. :shocked2: Thought I was watching a Nascar race when it happened. I'm not saying they're at fault. They aren't. I'm saying that it has been argued (mainly by my dad) that their cheating was what pushed Senna to drive beyond his limit. In other words if they hadn't cheated, he wouldn't be dead. (I was 11 at the time for the record, so I'm going on what I was told afterwards) As I understand, Williams had the fastest car so Senna would be leading the race until the pitstops. Benetton would always have the fastest pit stop and so would take the lead at that point. It drove Senna a bit mad- he couldn't understand how they did it, and he kept crashing his car trying to catch up. And then he really crashed. He honestly thought he could drive hard enough to win- he even had an Austrian flag folded up in the car in anticipation of winning. It didn't come out until later that Benetton had been winning races because they had tampered with their fuel rigs. They had illegally removed a filter so they could refuel faster and pass everyone in the pit stops. And it put everyone's lives in danger as that pit fire shows. But of course that was golden boy Michael Schmacher's first championchip so no one bothers to remember it anymore. Agreed. Two words: plausible deniability. He didn't know. You don't want the guy doing all the interviews after the race to have to lie when you rig a race like that, so you don't tell him. Cheating 101. They could, they have, and they did. See the post with the video.
  9. Yeah, that first corner at Australia has seen quite a bit of action over the years. :laugh3:
  10. The new lists have been added. I'll get this year's official version of the rules posted in the first post by the end of September. Until then assume it's identical to last year's rules. *bump* :builder2:
  11. My highschool had the choice between a polo shirt or a button up shirt. The polo shirt was a million times more comfortable and much easier to care for.
  12. Good riddance to bad rubbish. There are those who still think Ayrton Senna would not have died if Briatore and Benetton hadn't been cheating 15 years ago... And people are getting so upset about how a deliberate crash would put lives in danger... well so does tampering with the fuel hoses- as Jos Verstappen found out: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyZpASrVAsc]YouTube - Jos Verstappen pitstop fire 1994[/ame] Lies. It's not on every week.:P;):laugh3:
  13. I think he hides how strong it actually is- there's a whole octave or more there he never even uses. Like listen to this for example (around the 50 sec mark) [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj6l7ZiCOgo]YouTube - Kasabian Covers The beatles I'm So Tired[/ame] It seems the thing is that Serge has this funny little lizard voice (some people like it but not my cup of tea) and since he writes all the songs, he writes for his own vocal range. Tom has a much bigger range but because he doesn't write the songs, he never gets to show off what he's actually capable of.
  14. What are you studying? And what for? The trick with electives is if you don't like the idea, find things that are useful to your field to study. Many electives can have little if anything to do with what you think you ought to be studying but will teach you really, really useful skills that you will be greatful for someday- it's just not always obvious.
  15. Hmm... finally just listened to the album stream. I'm not sure what to think. With the first section I'm not blown away... but I don't dislike it. I think it will grow on me. Now the Symphony. Wow. That was something. Pretentious beyond all belief, but who wouldn't expect that from them. And they pull it off so well. I'm so jealous of Matt's piano playing. He supposedly can't even read music. I studied for nearly 6 years and can't play anything. *sigh*
  16. Oops. :embarassed: Well it clearly wasn't obvious enough then. :p Wait, are Hey Rosetta playing here?
  17. Found it!!! Listen to all the albums HERE!
  18. Hey Rosetta will win. *crossed fingers* :D But yeah... lots of great artists on that list some I've heard from and some I've heard of, but never anything bad... Malajube, K'naan, Metric... (love Malajube) It's blaphemy, I know, but Joel Plaskett has never done much for me. But even people who don't like him have been saying 3 is something special. There's a magazine who got permission to stream all of the nominated albums on their website... now which one was it?
  19. I'd say there's a fair number of Editors fans around here, actually.... And that's why most of us do sketches at this point... I did mine at the last minute last year and had to rack my brain to remember which ones I had wanted in my top 5, even. Mind like a sieve, me :embarassed:
  20. Wait, Muse actually got to play the VMAs? Sweet. Ten years... about flipping time.
  21. ^Yeah, it's probably not going to end up particularly high on my list being the sort of thing I don't listen to often (if ever). But it had some important things to say and therefore the occasional flash of real depth (see "The Fear"), it was amazingly well written and put together, and most satisfying of all it once again puts all the pop tarts to shame, so it will definitely be on any list I write this year.
  22. I suppose I should start my sketch earlier this year... 23. Oh my word. :shocked2: Her new album Ellipse is Glorious! Go listen to it, people. It's on her myspace right now: http://www.myspace.com/imogenheap Edit: Wow! Just found out that the video for Canvas was shot in Newfoundland! :nice:  [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXj0dF7LAyE]YouTube - Imogen Heap - Canvas[/ame]
