American unemployment at 17%
Uh... this will always be blamed on Bush. Because it was the policies of his administration (and to some extent Clinton's) and the consumer culture those policies encouraged that we're dealing with right now. You can't have debt financed "endless" growth without consequences. No amount of stimulus can change that. Not until the mess is cleaned up. But it is softening the blow, keeping the proverbial wheels from falling off the cart, and may yet keep a full-blown depression away. Pity Obama seems to be hell bent on destroying it all with his protectionism. Still Bush's fault, though.

it sucked....
Want to know a secret? 80% of good writing is overcoming that little voice in the back of your head that tells you that each word, sentence, paragraph, idea, ...you get the picture... is stupid. Many if not most writers have that voice screaming at them. Learning to overcome that voice is a discipline, not a talent. The more you write in spite of it the easier it is to ignore. What you have to tell yourself is that this is only the first draft. Getting the raw material out of your head right now is important. You can fix it later. Once you've finished it, then (and only then) you can sculpt it like a lump of clay; take your rough, messy, illogical first draft and tease out themes, make connections, even out the plot, tweak the language to make it special. But that is the second draft (and third, fourth, fifth...) First you need something to work with. First you need to create the clay before you can sculpt it. And that means just writing it. No matter how bad you think it is. No matter what that little voice is telling you. Just keep writing. :smart: You should try writing that story. I'd love to hear it.

wow, I just realized how immature I am
Wow... know that feeling. It finally sunk it after several times when a guy about 5 or 7 years YOUNGER than me thought I was significantly younger than him. (And not in the good way.) And most older people seem to think I'm about 5 years younger than I am. To be fair, I do dress very young for my age. It's what happens when you've been in school for many years with no clothes money. I bought a leather jacket while I was working over the summer and it seems to have somewhat caught me up to my age.

Albums of the Year 2009 *Now Closed*
I've added/updated all the new lists. We currently have 24 total. A good number for this early, so thanks guys! :D Well you've already got 5 there, so that's all you need for your list to qualify. One great way to find new albums is to look at other peoples lists here and research the ones you aren't familiar with. I've been introduced to a lot of music I like that way. Thanks for the link- it's a great resource. You just have to be careful because the release dates usually go by the US release rather than UK one- which counts here if it was earlier. I'll add it to the front page.

40,000 for new teeth!
I've heard of that before- this one case where the (relatively young) guy's teeth were so brittle that he couldn't even eat soft food without teeth potentially snapping off. It was some rare genetic thing. And implants worked for him. Sorry to hear that. It can't be fun. Have you tried getting a second opinion?

Why Are 15 Million Americans Unemployed When 8.3 Million Illegals Have Jobs? Immigration Moratorium
Oh, all this is entirely racist from one angle. The problem is that Race and other cultural boundary lines (and therefore social problems) have a habit of coinciding, especially in America. And I don't know what to do about that any more than anyone else. By the time we figure out that we'll have figured out the current immigration issues.

I don't even know what to say to that. :stunned: I take it you're more of an arts student than a physics major?

Obama: More School
Wow... That would be torture for kids with ADD or ADHD... I know everyone is different, but generally the most I can focus on classroom work is about 6 or 7 hours, sometimes less. -That's without medication. Longer days mean that borderline ADD kids will start acting up- even though they wouldn't have needed any intervention at all in the past. Ritalin in kids has a half-life of around 2 or 3 hours. That means in 5 or 6 hours 3/4 of it will have worn off. If school is 7 or 8 hours and the kid takes their pill an hour or so before school starts, that means at least the last 2 or 3 hours of the day are going to be hell on earth for some classrooms. Yes, there are time released types, but those can disrupt sleep cycles which leads to other problems. (I know from experience. There's a reason I'm not on the stuff anymore.) On the upside schools will get to find out first hand what parents go through when their kids crash off the stuff in the late afternoon. Maybe someone will finally realize that drugs are a tool, not a cure. But I can tell you from experience that unlike a job, 8:30-4:30 school days trying to learn can mean the difference between passing and failing -in a bad way- for someone with problems. Now people who need summer jobs to save for college.... there's another whole kettle of fish. Dave: Kids here get July and August off for the summer, about 2 weeks off at Christmas, and one week off in March. So about 12 weeks in total including teacher conferences.

National Climatic Data Center: Cooling in Last 10 Years
If that was true there wouldn't be a couple of giant icebreakers up at the North Pole right now trying to map the sea floor before the rest of the ice melts and opens up the Northwest Passage completely. Don't believe something is changing? Talk to the Inuit- they're staring at it. Ten years in North America is not in any way a large enough data set to conclude much of anything. (I believe the technical term is bad science) "Global warming" is to a large extent the changing of patterns that give regions their characteristics. Most places in the world don't achieve their average temperatures through latitude, but through ocean and air currents and geography. England is much further North than Nova Scotia, but the weather is much more mild because of the Gulf stream. That stream heads up North past the British Isles then comes down again making Atlantic Canada much colder than it ought to be. If that stops (and it's starting to stall last I heard) then Europe will probably see a mini ice age. Or maybe another factor could change the outcome again. I actually live at the same latitude as southern France and Mongolia. The three places couldn't be more different. Because they have very different factors affecting them. Gradual warming will not be even and will affect all of them in very different ways. Probably the biggest changes we will see will have more to do with changes in rainfall like Australia is seeing. It's called 'climate change' for a reason, and warming is only one symptom of it. As I understand it (and maybe I'm entirely wrong on this) isn't the warming actually referring to the upper atmosphere? But yeah, the ice is melting. Sounds like it's already passed it's tipping point: http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2009/09/23/tech-environment-ice-sheet-melting.html Who knows what the long term consequences are, but they aren't good.

Canada, eh?!
^Add atvs to the list and I half-way agree with you on that one. They rip up too many trails. But it's no fair to take something away from someone that they love. And there are far more violent things in pop culture than hockey. But I'm connected to people involved in MMA, so... ^^^Yeah, Lunenburgh is amazing, eh? ^^^^A bit cold. It was the middle of summer when I was there.
