Coldplay attend Strokes secret gig last night in London [09/06/10]
! I agree, I think it looks kind of stupid as I'm not a fan of earrings on men in general, but he should do whatever the hell he wants, and he did :D. I think we're all entitled to a little fangirly whine, though :P.

New Song???
Agreed. I would put money on the fact that EMI has no idea what the work the guys have done thus far, demos or otherwise, sound like, are called, or how many there are. I doubt anyone besides the band members, Eno, the studio techs, and a few other people have any idea. I maintain that EMI took it down as a precaution, not because they have any information on whether it's legit or not. The only other thing I can imagine happening is that someone that DOES know what's in those songs found it on YouTube and called EMI to take it down, but I'm not very quick to believe that mostly because I'm about 80% sure that this isn't Coldplay based on sound of the voice and the quality and style of the recording. If this was obviously Coldplay, then I'd say yes, that's what happened, but for now I just figure EMI is just on the fence about who the artist is as we are, but took them down just in case. Think about it this way: do you think Chris really rings up someone at EMI every time he has a song idea that may or may not mature into something strong enough to go on an album? No. He probably has hundreds of demos, both in the Beehive "vault" that he's mentioned and on his personal computer etc. that EMI knows nothing about. I don't think the fact that EMI removed it means squat. An idea that strengthens the case of it being legit, though: I think in the past Chris has said he records song ideas on his mobile phone and sends them to himself. The bad sound/echoeyness/quality of this recording makes me think it's just a quick hash job rather than something done in a studio (we know how good their studio demos sound)...or it's just an imitator layering on effects to cover up the differences in voice.

Poor Jonny! GOD, I WISH I COULD HAVE GONE. But it was too short notice for me to get down to London in time (and at a good price), and I'm leaving the country on Saturday for the summer and am in a huge packing frenzy :bigcry:. But the earrings...:inquisitive:. Chris always said he's too old now to do it and he was damn right! :P

New Song???
^ I kind of doubt it...she gets thousands of questions a day and has thousands more on the shelves that she picks from to answer so she might have not encountered one of the questions yet, and anyway, I doubt they'd regard this as an unusually pressing matter as a band, as it's happened before. I don't think she has any responsibility or vested interest in speaking on this whole demo thing one way or another. EMI was probably just scared that the demo might be Coldplay and tore it down as a precaution, because they as a company have no idea what Chris's demos are any more than we do. Hope I'm not bursting anyone's bubble ;). I just really don't think we should get our hopes up too high.

New Song???
*Puts in two cents* I think it's just a good imitator. The voice is close to pitch-perfect, at least on the first leak (I really don't think "Wedding Bells" is him at all) but his accent (for lack of a better word), his intonation, his way of saying words, just seems wrong to me. Obviously it could be intentional, but I just really don't think this is Chris. The quality of the recordings is also just not that good, or it's drenched in way too much reverb/effects for me to be convinced that it's a real Coldplay demo. Remember the VLVOD demos we got not so long ago? Listen to "Bloodless Revolution" or something else from that set of demos and the differences become extremely apparent. Unless Chris has completely changed his style of laying down the first sketches of a song (possible, but I feel like artists tend to work in the same way despite trying to produce different things), these just aren't his style, either. I could be entirely wrong, but at this point, I'd say I'm about 70% sure it's not Chris.

Um, well that just totally made my life :cheesy: I CANNOT WAIT FOR PART TWO. Those two are so freaking hilarious (and adorable). I think with a couple lessons, Chris could be an amazing actor: he's always done so well in things like this, like Extras, for example. AHH, SQUEEEEEEEEE.

Q&A with Guy Berryman from Apparatjik
:uhoh: WTF... I'm not the biggest Apparatjik fan out there, but seeing Guy alone and talking weirdly and saying weird things makes me a bit worried .

[May 2010] 'Roadie: My Life With Coldplay' by Matt McGinn
When I read the part about him and other roadies giving out/not giving out picks and setlists, I thought of Pris's "name that roadie" flashcards that she made for our Hartford CT concert in 2008 :nice:. Matt said one of the only reasons they ignore polite requests for souvenirs is when security are making them hurry up packing away the stage...I guess that happens a lot, because very seldom have I seen them willingly passing out things. Though I made friends with a "vidiot" in NJ in 2008 and he gave me my setlist...I just wish I knew his name!

Matt McGinn interviewed on Radio Kent (UK) today
Great interview! It's a really great little preview to the book for those who haven't read it yet. Thanks so much for the upload! I'm up for seeing if we could badger him for a CPing interview :sneaky: :P.

Shame on you for tending to your family first! :laugh3: I just realized something: the biography that Matt alluded to is probably the one Debs is allegedly working on .

[May 2010] 'Roadie: My Life With Coldplay' by Matt McGinn
My copy finally arrived today and I immediately ran home from the uni post office, got into bed, and read the entire thing in less than three hours. Never have I been more grateful for being a speed-reader as I have exams to get back to tomorrow! I don't think I have time to write such an eloquent review as Mich's (which I wholeheartedly agree with) but let's just say I thought the entire thing was epic and has further cemented my dream to work in live music production (though I always wanted to be more of a Vicki Taylor than a Matt McGinn). As Mich said, if you're looking for a book about the band, this isn't it, but for God's sake read it anyway. There are great personal stories of the band in there, but this book is really about the life and practice of being a roadie and what the life entails, and Matt tells it thoroughly and with great humor. He's been there through it all, it seems, but he focuses most of his attention on the big arena tours of X&Y and Viva la Vida, and what goes on behind the scenes more than on the front lines, ending with a heartwarming account of the last Wembley gig, which almost made me tear up both because it was a perfect ending and because I was there myself. As a side note, most of the pictures in the three glossy sections were from the New Jersey concert in October 2008 which made me squee because I was at that show in the very front row...and the Today Show...ahh, memories. It was awesome to re-live my experiences of various gigs in contrast to Matt's experiences on the front lines of the crew, as well as hear about their time in the studio recording X&Y and Viva. This is probably the most inarticulate review I've ever posted, but I've only just finished and have yet to really eat or do anything else besides read the book all day (can you tell I need some excitement in my life these days? :P). I'll probably come back later with more formed thoughts as a procrastination to revising for exams! I also can't help but almost explode at the line in the introduction that says the band is working on their own biography. No idea if it's true, but for now: :bomb:.

[May 2010] 'Roadie: My Life With Coldplay' by Matt McGinn
I am SO EXCITED to read this I can barely even express it . Amazon apparently dispatched by book on Thursday with expected arrival YESTERDAY, though . I'm going to throw a fit at the Royal Mail if it's not here tomorrow. Thanks for the reviews, everyone! It makes me even more excited :bomb:.

Sigur Rós
Hello everyone! :D I haven't been in this thread for ages. I'm on a huge Sigur Ros kick lately, though, I think because of all the excitement for Jonsi's new album, and the fact that I'm going to Iceland in about a month . I have a favor to ask: I asked in Multimedia about this several days ago, but I haven't had any luck yet. Does anyone happen to have We Are Scientists cover of "Hoppipolla" that they could post/send me? I'd love to avoid doing a crap audio rip of the YouTube version, and all the links I find on the board here are dead and ages old, so if someone has it on their hard drive that they could share, I'd be greatly appreciative! :nice:

BBC6 Music: EMI says Coldplay 2010 album release is UNTRUE
This. Especially the part about the label/band friction...I'm no great fan of EMI myself, but I think it's kind of ridiculous for us to assume that they have spats about who says what regarding the band first, when it barely means anything money-wise in a concrete form yet.
-
BBC6 Music: EMI says Coldplay 2010 album release is UNTRUE
That's the music business, and the world of business in general. But I don't think that means the band can't RECORD whenever they want...they can have five full albums in the can ready to go if they want, but that definitely doesn't mean they can release whatever they want when they want--only label-free bands like Radiohead have any kind of leeway like that. Which is kinda why I want record labels to die...I think the music market would explode with all kinds of good things creativity wise when a good chunk of the big business is taken out of the picture. I still say summer 2011 at the earliest :P. Coincinding with my university graduation .

Ask the Oracle on Coldplay.com (Now in session!)
I'm interested to see how she'll respond (if at all) to the flood of questions regarding the hypothetical 2010 release she's bound to have waiting in her inbox right now. We know you must have an iPhone/Blackberry, Debs...answer one or two while you're waiting for the plane at the airport! :P

BBC6 Music: EMI says Coldplay 2010 album release is UNTRUE
I thought about that too: why it might be adventageous for EMI to push off the release, and I think you're right. At the same time, record sales of their previous 4 albums etc trickling in in small numbers over the next year doesn't equal the huge goldrush of a brand-new record from their top-selling artist, and since they're apparently hurting so badly these days, I'd bet they'd want to sweep as much money into their arms as fast as possible. Which is why I'm confused as to why they'd so quickly refute the idea that Coldplay could release something this year. I feel like there's something contractual involved, like there's a stipulation on how quickly and close together they can release their LPs, or that the band and EMI might have had to reach an agreement by now about a winter 2010 release. I'm going to have to go back and re-watch the interview, but did Chris actually use the word ALBUM or FIFTH ALBUM? Because I wouldn't be surprised if they released a "Best Of" sort of compilation with 2-3 new tracks sprinkled in it and called it a release, especially if they actually want to get off EMI and if their contract allows any major releases, new material or not, to count in the 5-album deal. Pearl Jam did that with their Rearview Mirror compilation to get off their label. Also, how official is it that Coldplay is actually contractually bound to 5 albums with EMI? I've always taken that to be true, and I know it's hypocritical to say I suddenly believe something Chris said in an interview, but both he and Jonny made it sound like they either won't be free of EMI after the next album, or they don't want to be.

BBC6 Music: EMI says Coldplay 2010 album release is UNTRUE
^True, like I say, not impossible. But we know how Chris runs his mouth, we know how busy they are and recently have been (so I bet they could use something more of a break), and we figure that EMI needs the money SO badly that they wouldn't refute it within hours if there was any hope of it being true. I would love a release ASAP as much as the next CPer, but I've learned to believe nothing that comes out of Chris's mouth regarding releases/the band unless it's in writing on coldplay.com :P. According to him, they should have broken up long ago, should be breaking up soon, we should have more than 4 albums released by now, he should be completely bald...and a whole host of other things. I love the man to death, but I don't think I'll ever believe anything he says in an interview. Unless it's "I love Chelsea." I might have to take his word for it on that one.

BBC6 Music: EMI says Coldplay 2010 album release is UNTRUE
Almost 3 years exactly for X&Y to VLVOD, so the end of 2010 isn't completely impossible, but I don't think it's likely. As much as I'd eat up any major release they put out initially, for the sake of their work I hope they put more time between VLVOD and the next album. They're definitely growing as artists, and I would think the more time between albums, the better and more different they'd be. At least, that's what I assume. If they actually have a major 2010 release, especially one by Christmas, I'll personally go to the Bakery and knock on the door when they're there and pretend to be selling Girl Scout cookies/magazine subscriptions/Jehovah's Witness leaflets. While wearing all my Coldplay regalia :P.

Gwyneth...
I feel like I've heard that somewhere as well...that's actually a brilliant idea, if you ask me. I'd probably use it as a jewllery holder or something boring, but nothing as cliche as the bathroom!

Gwyneth...
I figured you were going to post that, Alison :D. It's actually really interesting on the whole. I've heard a lot of people keep it in their underwear drawer. I'll have to come up with a really witty place to put mine :P. Of course, people probably took that Gwyneth quote as her being ungrateful for the win .
