i just saw on Channel V, Back in Black by Muse w/ Nic Chester live from BDO Sydney 2010. This is the first time i've seen a pro shot of that song. does anybody have a youtube link to it or even better a download link?

Alright it's Top 10 time. Each of these albums gets at least 9.5/10 in my books. 10. Franz Ferdinand - S/T (2004) I was a very very latecomer to the Franz party. Until late 2008 I had only heard Take Me Out and Michael. Little did i know that there was this magnificent record. The scary thing about this debut effort is the fact that basically any of the songs on it could of been a huge hit single. Each and every track has something special and memorable about it, a classic riff, a catchy lyric, sweet melody or a ingenius combination of all three. The supermassive hit Take Me Out does just that, the day I finally get to see this song performed live is the day I can die a happy man. The album also has one of the best closers of any album I have ever heard, 40" is indie rock at its brilliant best with its sexy vocals, polished guitar work and impeccable structure. Indie rock may be on its way out, but Franz will hang around for many more years and continue to produce top notch alternative music. 9. Kid A - Radiohead (2000) This may not be my favourite album of all time, but it's up there as being one of the most influential on my music tastes. When I bought this album mid-2008 I had little or no appreciation for any music that wasn't guitar driven rock n roll. So putting on this record I was expecting some genius off centre rock from this great band. We all know what I ended up getting. Anti-rock. Five years ago I would of never of even imagined enjoying an album like Kid A but now the strange has become the norm and I can't imagine it any other way. I will always cherish those times when it was 2 or 3 in the morning and I decided to stay up an extra hour just to enjoy this album in total silence. Above all, this is, in my opinion, the album that sounds the best live on stage as the band is forced to change things around and being the amazing band they are they've taken it to another level. 8. Parachutes - Coldplay (2000) How can a band be so quiet yet so clear? How can a record be so soft yet so powerful? How can a song be so dark yet so beautiful? Parachutes answered all of those questions to perfection. I know this is going to sound so very cliche but, I miss the insecurity and self consciousness in Chris's voice and lyrics, I miss being able to hear every instrument clearly and I miss the raw emotion the songs on this awesome album have. There was something so genuinely honest about Parachutes, I worry that the band's worldwide mega success has taken away their ability to make music like they did 10years ago. Aside from the temporary dullness Sparks creates, this album to my ears is nearly faultless. Also, as a little side not, Yellow is in my humble opinion one of the greatest pop songs ever written. 7. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Like I've mentioned several times above, each of these albums hold a special place in my heart. The Arctic Monkeys are the only band I've been a fan off since what I like to call "day one" which means I've loved them since their first single. But it was actually when I first heart When The Sun Goes Down that I started to realise just how incredible this band was. If there's one criticism of this past decade of music, it's the lack of musicianship in our most popular bands. The Monkeys bucked that trend, the way their two guitars dance around each other with the bass playing a wonderful melody is a joy to listen to. But we all know that the real hero of the band is drummer Matt Helders, I have little knowledge of drumming but there can't be many as good as Helders in the current alternative scene. This might sound a little funny, but I am genuinely proud to be a fan of this band, they've managed to release 3 brilliant albums each with its own sound and texture. I can only imagine where this band will be in 15 years time. 6. Is This It? - The Strokes Alongside Songs for the Deaf this is the other unlikely selection. I don't even know why I like it. I guess the guitar work is great, the vocals are pretty unique and the riffs are excellent. But I can say that about alot of records. I guess that's why it's so high up on my list, it's brilliance is indescribable. 5. Late Registration - Kanye West I'll be up front and admit that I don't really like hip hop. But this album transcends hip-hop. West's passion and commitment to his trade is evident on every beat, lyric and sample. Every collaborator has been chosen carefully and the songs play out like a real "album" album. The thing I love the most about West's work and especially this album is the 'nerdy-ness' it possesses, the production work is extremely polished and make it a joy to listen to. Highlights; undoubtedly the blissful Gold Digger, the Lupe Fiasco aided Touch The Sky, the dark simmering epic Drive Slow and the very touching Hey Mama. Overall, as much as I dislike the hip hop industry and the rubbish it has produced I will always love this album. But nothing can top the Jay-Z-less version of Diamonds from Sierra Leone, the relentless verses and awe-inspiring chorus samples. At the end of the day it's irrelevant that this is a hip-hop album, this is simply a brilliant music album. 4. S/T - Wolfmother They said this album would save rock n roll, I didn't think there was anything wrong with it in the first place. It simply brought the most beautiful brand of music into a new era and they did in spectacular fashion. To be honest this album doesn't belong on this list on its own merits, it's the way it sounds live on stage that makes it so amazing. Prog rock does not get much better than the way it sounds on this album. Minds Eye is a flawless epic, Woman is one of the songs of the era, White Unicorn is psych rock heaven, Dimension is the perfect moshpit starter and Pyramid is shear genius. Yes, the vocals are pretty damn average but the rhythm section pulls its weight and provides seamless support to Andrew Stockdale's other-worldly guitar work. It's a great shame the band are no longer together, they really were the great white hope of Aussie rock n roll in the new century but with the new line up many things are possible so we will just have to wait and see. 3. Elephant - The White Stripes This album confirmed Jack White's status as one of the premier rock guitarist going around at the moment. The fact that he recorded and produced this album in something like 2 weeks is just mind blowing. Lyrically and vocally this still remains Jack's best effort to date with some pretty impressive work on the keys thrown into the mix. I know being all lo-fi and minimalistic seems to a bit of trend now but Jack's ability to sound so heavy and 'complete' (sorry couldn't think of a better word) sets him apart from other artists. Personally, this record once again exposed me to a brand of music I had never really paid much attention to, that being the blues. That only heightened my respect for Jack White as a modern day music genius. Now having released 8 albums in the decade across 3 different bands I'm starting to feel that he is starting to spread himself a little thin and that is reflected in the quality of music he has produced in the last 3 years. Nonetheless, Jack White is my artist of the decade. And let's not forget Meg on the drum, she does what she does and she does it well. I thought I was confident with my list but now that I've reached the pointy end I'm having second thoughts. So I'm going to sleep on it

well i recorded the Animal Collectives Live at the Wireless re-broadcast last night on triple j. i will upload it in the multimedia section i will try to record the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Falls Festival set tonight. if unsuccessful someone else will have to do it next sunday as i wont be home. the week after is Lisa Mitchell also at the Falls Festival. ah the year i became obsessed with music. i believe 2003 holds the record for the year the most number of albums were sold worldwide. most of my favourite albums of this year have already been mentioned and they all rock!

they still have another 2 shows to play in australia on the 20th and 21st of feb. its going to be really tough for brandon to play these shows. personally i dont think a two yr break will hurt the band's popularity too much. Killers fans tend to be some of most hardcore in the music world. we often forget that these "rockstars" are not too different from us (aside from the number of digits in their bank accounts) so i hope the music media shuts up for a little while and allow the band to do what they think is best.

my sincerest condolences and apologies to brandon, his family and his band for ever doubting for a second that they were covering up something else. i really hope God gives him the strength to get through this rough period, his most probably sitting in a hotel room not far from where i am now. his music has been a shining light in dark times for me, so i hope our good wishes make up for at least some of that. thats all i've got to say. kinda feel like a shitty person right now.

there is something very very wrong with all this. they signed on for that extra sydney date so recently and now they pull out. i know i sound really insensitive especially if there really is something serious in their families but they are pulling out of these days less than a week before they were meant to hit the stage at these festivals.

no takers for 2009? i wouldnt mind doing it if no one else is interested. i will have my own top 20 done tomorrow so i have the time do to a review.

20. Songs For The Deaf - Queens Of The Stone Age (2002) This record is by far the least likely inclusion in this list. I first heard this album in early 2009 at the start of the uni semester. I knew nothing about the band and had only heard No One Knows once. Nevertheless I thought I would give it a go, and I was absolutely blown away on my very first listen. It was heavy, wild and sleazy yet at the same time it was so carefully written. Yes, the album does have its weak points but overall it is a spectacular record. And how can you go wrong with the legendary Dave Grohl behind the kit, his performance on this album can only be described as 'pant-wetting-esque'. Its a shame there hasn't been another hard rock album this decade which has given perfect melodies with incredible musicianship. 19. Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park (2001) My first album. My first love :) I often forget just how much I love this album, even as I fall deeper and deeper into the realms of indie music. It takes me back to a very special part of my life, growing up. I actually discovered this band through my favourite tv show DragonBallZ, as many fans of the show would post montage videos online with Linkin Park's music playing in the background. I remember being amazed at the band's ability to mix the genres of rock, metal, rap and techno into such a perfectly coherent sound, little did I know that the genres had been mashed since the late 80s. No matter the direction the band takes in the future, I will always have endless appreciation and love for the 38mins of pure bliss that is Hybrid Theory. 18. Antics - Interpol (2004) Writing this piece, I am beginning to realise how hapharzardly I have discovered all this music. The first time I listened to Interpol I have never even heard a single song by the group but I knew of their critical acclaim and in my desperate attempt to be 'cool' and fit into the alternative music scene I got a copy of the record. Physically (on stage at least) they come across as being dark, brooding and well, dull. Yet their records are so warm and welcoming, the lush landscapes they create, the dense atmospheres the music drifts in and the strong confident vocals combine to produce something truly brilliant. But above all, it is so painfully simple. Yet its Antics ability to move you which in my opinion sets it apart from the New Yorker's other efforts. It's the type of music I would one day love to write. 17. Cruel Guards - The Panics (2007) For as long I've been a music fan I've told everyone who will listen, that I really don't give a damn about the lyrical skill of a band. But when it is as clearly ingenious as it is on Cruel Guards, it's very hard to ignore. This Perth band did some special things on this album, they created a brand of music that was as radio-friendly as you get it yet it has the power to make the listener think, even after the 1000th listen. Moreover, there's something quintessentially Aussie about the album, it radiates with textures of the bush but has melodies of the beach and stories of the city. Under our beautiful southern skies, this album is stunning. 16. White Blood Cells - The White Stripes (2001) The Stripes' second album of a very young century yet their minds were still in previous one. There are so many different sounds, influences, emotions and styles it makes it very difficult to talk about. I have no recollection of how I discovered The White Stripes so I can't write about that either. All I can say is that I just think Jack White is awesome, his passion for music explodes out of the speakers on every track and personally I find that very appealing in an artist, to often you see musicians who perform as if its a chore. White epitomises a truly great guitarist, the freedom with which he plays is awe-inspiring and somewhat refreshing. 15. Sound of Silver - LCD Soundsystem (2007) Easily one of the most enjoyable albums on this list. The middle 22mins of this album comprising of Someone Great, All My Friends and Us v Them is some of the most incredible electronica music I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. The dynamics on the tracks are just so powerful and lively, they really do take this album to another level. But the true highlight of the album comes at the end with New York I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down, after over 50mins of hard hitting electronica it makes for an odd but somewhat fitting conclusion. Despite my lack of understanding and appreciation for this brand of music, I absolutely love this album. 14. Diorama - Silverchair (2002) The Australian music scene has often been criticised for being a little one dimenstional and not being daring enough or adventurous. Well, Silverchair's 4th effort blew all those claims right out of the water. I love it how ambitious they were with this record, they really threw in the kitchen sink. Quite easily one of the "biggest" Australian albums ever in terms of the prodcution, the sound and the concept. It's a great shame the frontman fell ill after its release and couldn't support it as much as he could have. An even greater shame is the fact that I didn't discover the record until 2008. But better late than never. 13. Hot Fuss - The Killers (2004) The Killers will always hold a special place in my heart, as my first moshpit experience. It was 2 days after I finished my final Year 12 exam, so I had alot of stress to release. It's a night I will never forget and still regard it as one of the best concerts I have ever been to. It was the songs of this record that stood out the most, there was just something different when the band performed the tracks live. The energy levels were unbelievable and the passion resonated through the arena unlike anything else I have heard. The band has become one of the stories of the decade, their success in both indie and commercial circles rivaled that of the biggest bands in the world. The rise and rise and imminent fall of this great 4 piece has been really interesting to watch but it pains me to think that the end might be near for such a talented group of men. 12. Neon Bible - Arcade Fire (2007) This would be a good place to mention my love and admiration for Triple J radio. Growing up in the outer suburbs of Sydney with a friends circle who weren't the biggest music lovers, I was never exposed to the amazing world of alternative music. It was when I started listening to the "J's" that I discovered what was out there. One of the highlights from the time I've spent listening to the station was the broadcast of a show Arcade Fire did at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney in 2008. Words don't quite describe my reaction to this performance, it felt as though the band was taking music to another level. Tracks like Intervention, Antichrist Television Blues and No Cars Go were nothing short of mind blowing. I know their sophomore record is an odd choice but the rock fan in me finds greater pleasure in Neon Bible. My expectations for their 3rd release are extremely high and I don't expect to be dissapointed. 11. Fleet Foxes - S/T (2008) Leaving this out of my Top 10 was an incredibly tough decision to make. This record is truly something special. I fell in love with it when I was going through a pretty tough time in my life, making it all the more special. I loved the album so very much that I had the special edition of it imported all the way from New York because they were not stocking it anywhere in Sydney (it was eventually released 3 months later). I really don't think I need to go into the particulars of this record as almost all of you are familiar with its brilliance. The only reason I left this out of the Top 10 is because it does lack the variety that my No.10 possesses, which is also the reason I haven't become a mad indie folk fan, most of it is just a little, same-same. My Top 10 is done and ready to go but I need to think about what I'm going to write.

Well I've finally made up my mind and I'm ready to share my favourite albums of this decade. But before I start, a little something. Each and every album on this short yet definitive list holds a special place in my memory. All of them have had a significant impact on me in one way or another. Some I discovered by pure chance, others by the radio and a couple from recommendations. But as confident I am with this list I must admit I am in no way properly qualified to make it. I only started listening to music frequently in 2003 and didn't start to follow the scene closely until about 2007. Nonetheless, this was my generation and goddamit I am proud of it. I apologise in advance for making it so long and arduous but you only do this once every 10 years, so I thought I would make the most of it.

Triple J's One Night Stand is going to Alice Springs this year (no idea why though, its meant to be only very small towns) on March 27. Headlining the free concert is the John Butler Trio, whose album April Uprising will be out the week after. Rest of the line up will be announced next week. Just like every other year, the entire event will be broadcast live on the radio and most of it will be shown at a later date on ABC2.

im not a big fan of The Resistance so i was generous putting 2 songs in the from it. i thought long and hard about including Sunburn but i decided to go for Feeling Good cos i wanted a really good cover in there. i havent listened to what it would sound like but after i do i might shift some things around. because i want a really upbeat start then a softer period then a few anthems and finish the main set off in style. im madly in love with my encores, encore 2 would be an epic 10min version of stockholm syndrome or the version they did at glasto 04.

i'll never forget the first time i listened to the album. i bought it for $20 ( a little dear for a cd) and put it into my cd player. took one listen through and was totally disgusted. i felt like snapping the cd in half because i was soo disappointed. 3 years later it has a guaranteed spot in my list of fave albums of the 2000s.
