Montreal troupe Arcade Fire has been at work on a third album throughout 2009, and it’s likely to emerge mid next year. Billboard in the US is the first to report that the follow-up to 2007’s lauded Neon Bible “is currently on track for a May release”. Not much else is known about the highly-anticipated record, despite BBC this week revealing that the band had spent six months in the studio with producer Markus Dravs. Having served as engineer on Neon Bible, Dravs has also manned the boards for Bjork’s Homogenic, Brian Eno’s Nerve Net and – rejoice Arcade Fire fans – Coldplay’s Viva la Vida or Death And All His Friends. Also revealed in the Billboard report is news that “the band is weighing multiple offers for live shows in the spring, and will likely take a top slot at one or more of the major North American summer festivals”.

its funny how in movie industry the awards for best movie, ie the Oscars gets the more attention than the awards for the worst movies ie. Razzies. but in the music industry its the award night for the worst music of the year ie, the Grammys thats gets the greatest attention. weird?

yeah i got my tickets from the post office a couple of weeks back. dont really like the design tbh. and yeah they are a little flimsy dont see them surviving if things get messy in the pit during muse. i really cant decide which sideshow to go to! at the moment its most probably Rise Against cos i have a mate who really loves them.

i guess its the whole mainstream-ing of that folk sound that has dominated the indie scene for the past 3yrs that kinda bugs me and feels like a low blow to my male music fan ego. i gave the band a chance but not a fair chance, my prejudices and stubborness have gotten in the way. look forward to your list alex.

A brilliant mix of catchy melodies, atmospheric vibes and some awesome edgy indie rock. Can't wait to see what they come up with next 11. Wonder - Lisa Mitchell I'll admit first up that i am madly in love with this girl. Her cuteness explodes out of the speakers. at the age of 19 she has put together a truly amazing record here of perfect pop tunes with tooth-achingly sweet vocals and lyrics. its hard not to love her. 10. Merriweather Post Pavillion - Animal Collective What cute is to wonder, genius is to MPP. the most accessible animal collective record to date hosts some of their most melodic stuff. in particular Bluish, amidst all the crazyness this track moves me in a really weird way. im glad i gave this record a second chance later in the year. 9. Tonight! - Franz Ferdinand Ah the anticipation behind this album. i admire these guys so much for being daring and trying a few new things but i think they took it a tiny bit too far with the 7min epic (trainwreck) that is Lucid Dreams. otherwise they thoroughly deserve the mainstream attention they've enjoyed with No You Girls and Turn It On. 8. Primary Colours - The Horrors my after-work album of the year. i knew i would like these guys from the moment i read about them and saw their image and artwork. angry punk rock that when heard in the right context becomes gentle and soothing. 7. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Phoenix finally a record that justifies the reaction it has received. not overrated or underrated, just right. too often pop rock becomes plastic and meaningless but these frenchmen add some class and style and make it oh so very sophisticated. 6. Two Suns - Bat For Lashes Natasha Khan. what a talent! this album was heading right for the top 3 for the year until i made the fatal error of putting it on my surround sound system. the album became lost in the open space, almost as if the 6 speakers and sub rid it of its innocence. strictly headphone only album. 5. Fantasies - Metric this album joins a small club in my album collection called albums-where-you-get-to-track-7-without-realising-it. and has anybody else noticed the freking amazing production work on this album! amazing! 4. Humbug - Arctic Monkeys this is going to sound a little odd. but i am very very proud of these guys. having been a fan since day 1 i had great expectations of this album and the boys didnt let me down one bit. they could of done what so many of their collegues are doing and make a safe radio friendly arena rock album. but no they decided to run in the opposite direction right into the californian desert. a band i cant wait to tell my grandkids about in a few decades time. :) 3. xx - The xx its so hard to explain this album. you either get it or you dont. for me it clicked early on and since then i cant get enough of the beautiful guitar melodies and the subtle bass work. its lo-fi without being cheap, its indie without being hip, its morose without being emo. is this the sound of the future? lets not get ahead of ourselves. 2. It's Blitz - Yeah Yeah Yeahs if 2008 was ruled supreme by the mainstream women (beyonce and co) then 2009 is all about the indie chick. lily, natasha, emily, lisa and the chick from the xx have done em proud but sitting on her high throne as Queen is the incredible Karen O giving a vocal performance for the ages. the gossip had the chart success, but YYY's have the genius that is Nick Zinner :) 1. Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear first listen *snore*. second listen hmmm *snore*. third listen hmmm right...*snore*..............10th listen *holy crap dude this is amazing*. the days surrounding the release of this album was the first time since in rainbows that ive seen the music world go absolutely nuts over an album and it was pretty awesome following it then falling in love with the record. its when albums like this come around that you understand why you love music so much. Special Mentions Florence and the Machine - listed under albums-i-thought-i-was-too-cool-to-listen-to-before-realising-how-frekn-awesome-it-is. havent totally made up my mind with this album but i think it will be on heavy rotation over summer. The Middle East - Recordings of the Middle East - EP of the year (the special edition at least). their debut will hopefully put australian indie back on the world stage. The Beatles - my band of the year. what a journey it has been discovering the incredible back catalogue of this group, whenever i look back at 2009 i will think of the beatles and the impact they had on me almost 40 years after they disbanded. bring on albums of the decade :D

^^ just out of curiousity. out of all those albums you did listen to. how many did you genuinely enjoy. i listened to about the same number as you but only 20-25 really grabbed my attention enough to make me listen to them over and over again. and only 10 i thought were truly impressive. thats down from about 30 last year.

Even summertime clothes is pretty awesome. well the whole darn album is pure genius. but a little to genius-ish for my liking. 5 steps to making coldplay sound like animal collective 1. a bit of LSD 2. add a bit of crystal meth 3. a naked picture of amy winehouse 4. heavily scratched cd of parachutes played over the top of rush of blood at double speed 5. goddamit they still sound different!

they're my favourite australian band of 2009. i missed out on seeing them last month but will be sure to catch them at BDO. another band whose debut LP will be massively anticipated. they've even been picked up by Pitchfork who have been really loving them. so any release will be sure to get some international recognition.

at the moment its nothing more than the Summertime EP, remix EP and their newest single I Felt Stupid came out this week. i've been hearing some rumours of a debut LP next year. but i think they need to mature a bit more before throwing out a full length. http://www.moshimoshimusic.com/artists/the-drums - the drums summed up on one page.

its only albums that have been played at least once on triple j this year. U2 havent been played on the station for a good 10yrs. no complaints from me, they get enough airplay on other stations.
