I think if you made it a newcomer award, or something similar to the Shortlist, it would have more credibility. Anthony & the Johnsons may have been taken more seriously if they'd beaten a group of similar unknowns, rather than Coldplay or the Kaisers as was the case that year. OK Computer got beat by Roni Size! M People beat out Blur & Pulp!

Yeah, for the life of me I can't remember what the bloody thing is called, but it's open to anyone (ie not just American acts) and Feist was nominated a couple of years back.

I believe they have an equivilent to the Mercury in the US, but that your only eligible if it's your first album or it's sold less than a certain amount of copies - can anyone confirm that? Anyway, I've always thought it would be a good idea to make the Mercury a prize for newcomers. Frankly, the fact Radiohead have been nominated 5 times and never won just devalues the whole thing. M People have a Mercury Award for God's sake!

Ah, that sounds lovely! My fridge is where I stick tickets from any really good gigs I've been too. I have a picture of Coldplay slap bang in the middle - it's a black and white shot and I've been all excited about the prospect of surrounding it with coloured butterflies!:smug: I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem with them.

Absolutely yes! I've only seen it on the telly so far but it looks great, it's something a bit different and I hope to bag some as a souvenir when I see them in December 141 days and counting...

I honestly didn't fully appreciate X & Y 'til about 4 months ago. I remember being really under-whelmed by it when it first came out - it's my own fault, I got WAY too excited about it's release. As a result, I never really listened to it properly. I dug it out in preparation for VLV and suddenly, it just clicked. Probably 'cos I was thinking "hmmmmn... whatever". It's still my least favourite of the four though. I think VLV is probably going to end up as my favourite, I just never make definitive statements so early on. When I listen to it, it still feels like the beginning of a crush... but if that feeling doesn't wear off soon, then I guess it really is better than AROBTTH!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing... at the time, I read some really positve reviews for X & Y in the English press. Then there was that one really bad one (was it the NY Times?), and all of a sudden, people got a bit jittery back on this side of the pond. I think the band themselves have been so critical of X & Y in the press for the VLV launch that it's made everyone look at it again and say "Hey, it wasn't that bad" I also think the Eno effect has not been entirely positive. Firstly there's an immediate comparison drawn to U2. The band themselves talked about a new direction , and the press started labelling it their "experimental, Radiohead album". When everyone finally heard it, it wasn't different enough for a lot of people. It's a brilliant COLDPLAY album, but the press/industry was expecting something different/more

Guy was talking about it on the Virgin interview. Apparently he lobbied really hard to get it on the last album, but was a lone voice. Jonny started laughing and told him to "let it go, it's over" - clearly Mr. Berryman had a hard time over that decision!

Sounds like the free concert they did, plus a few snippets of interview thrown in. It was awesome, got me all excited about seeing them in December! Check out Jay-Z in the crowd looking all cool, and Ricky Gervais grinning like a cheshire cat!

Well, on the one hand, they've won best album at The Brits for each of their previous efforts - the run had to end sometime. On the other hand, U2 can't compete in the same category because their Irish - they'll be up in the International section. And I can't see Radiohead being given any prizes from the music industry - everyone got very sniffy about them "giving their music away". As for the Grammys - who knows? No-one would have predicted Wino winning 5 and then being beaten by jazz for album of the year.
