  1. if it helps any- they were playing stuff live from their reckoning album (one of their earliest ones - and IMO their best album ever) - i also think murmur is def worth checking out. Their earlier work is just awesome. id also consider eponymous (a sort of best of) and And I Feel Fine...: The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 by R.E.M. - it might be best to start with a best of and figure out what you like. or go towards their newer stuff and someone else mentioned some albums. and harborcoat might be one of my favorite songs ever! im waiting to hear an incredible cover. and theres this beautiful cover album of Automatic for the People - which is my favorite of their newer albums. for any fans of REM - check this out http://stereogum.com/drivexv/
  2. ok heres my review - its a bit short but ive only had about 3-5 complete listens and never really put my thoughts together till at work last week. im running out of time as im headed to chicago and have too many shows. ok anyway --- overall - i thought there were some great songs to it, but i felt like i was stuck listening to the orb. not great music for work, but at times it completely worked. and dont get me wrong - i love the orb - im just not sure i can be in that frame of mind all the time. just think 'puffy little clouds' and thats how i felt. 1. i would have sworn this was the orb - so i cant wait to hear who it is - probably sigur ros or something which sadly i never listen to - but i should as im seeing them in concert - has that dream-like spaciness sound to it that always makes me feel like ive been transported to another world. 2. hell its the teenagers - and if theyre not the teenagers they should be. im quite sure the song is in french but has that same french pop sound that theyre using. esp with the very low vocals - thats almost kinda breathiness sexiness. if its yelle - im doubly embarrassed as i saw her live this year! 3. hell i swore this could have been early blur - damon at his finest - and then i was like 'oh f***! thats not blur - its the f'ing streets!' - about now my friend in london would be dying laughing as he loves the streets and always made me listen to them. can i just say the streets are brilliant and the fact that i always think its early blur is the highest compliment. 4. the song was too short for me that it left no impact. ah well. 5. everytime i hear this song i think of the genius of beirut. if its not beirut, they should cover it. 6. oohhh lots of instruments! yay! its so soft/calm and it just blends together so well. must find out who this artist is. 7. frightened rabbit - i never quite got the hype of them, and then i heard this song and they are the most beautiful lyrics. now i understand what my friends were talking about. 8. the second song to remind me of the orb - and somehow i also jotted down Jonny Greenwood's orchestra. now that stuff is brilliant! 9. Get Well Soon - Witches Rest Now in the Fire all i can say is - whoever did this you ROCK! it was bizarre i was listening to this/singing along - going oh i know all these lyrics. WTF is it. so ill admit i had to google it because i couldnt live without knowing who it was. im a sucker for lyrics and this guy/gal has genius writing abilities. im in love with their music. and the deep vocals on the lead singer - oohh yeah! prob my favorite song. 10 - wolf parade - just shoot me now. if i have to hear one more person tell me the geniusness of this band - ill shoot myself. the lead singer's voice goes down for me with the lead singers voice of clap your hands say yeah. its the most irritating song that i couldnt listen to it after the first time. 11. this song really reminded me of jonny greenwoods orchestra. i saw it performed live - and it was the one time i had chills going down my spine. i was reliving that whole experience still picturing i was in the movie 'there will be blood'. and im sure this is totally different - but you owe it to yourself to listen to his orchestra. hes an artist in every sense of the word. 12. another short song and great way to end the mix. i loved the melodies. just a simple folk-y song! so there you have it. reading this makes me laugh at times. sometimes its hard to get the real essence at work, but unfortunately time is of the essence and im using my time wisely at work ;) cant wait to hear what most of this stuff is. im ready to start laughing at myself - wondering how i didnt know some of this. seriously tho - this got me to hear some stuff that i prob would never listen to (im sure a lot of it is newer indie artists that i should know). cant wait to see some of the other mixes :) cheers!
  3. I saw Santogold yesterday at Summerstage. I was a bit bummed she didnt have a full band because that really limited her set which ended up being 25 mins max. But of the music she did play - she got a crowd that was dead tired from the insane heat/humidity - to get up and dance. Everyone around me was singing along and dancing - and we were in the VIP section which most people never get up and dance in (its at the very back of the venue and theres seats back there) -- i volunteer at summerstage so im not that special. LES Artistes is awesome live - it begs for you to dance and sing along. All I can say is NYC loves her. The place was packed yesterday and there were people all along the outside listening/watching. I will say the whole thing was brutal. People passed out and missed her set, paramedics everywhere. Other than that - she is _SOOOOO_ worth seeing! Her music is a great combination for Coldplay - totally different. She will definitely get the audience worked up and with a band I can only imagine how great it will be. I just wish I was getting to see her and the band.
  4. I just keep thinking that if Coldplay were to ever tour with her - none of us would ever be getting tix. the way hannah montana sold out in secs here and no one could get tix overwhelmed me. i heard of friends with kids trying to pay $1000's just to get their kids to the show. thats pure insanity! anyway the whole idea is laughable unless their label has something else in mind for them.
  5. Love these reviews and cant wait to see them. Im always surprised when people cant stand for 90mins long to see the headliner. Really pisses me off, especially as i just stood 5.5 hours in 95 degree sun watching bands and nearly passed out. And the drummer in Broken Social Scene had heatstroke, but we all got through it. But I digress. Heres a review posted by a friend of mine (vansmack) on the 9:30 Club message board in DC. http://www.930.com/cgi-bin/ubb-cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=016423;p=25 It was a great show. The tempo was great - plenty of speed ups and slow downs, a lot of entertaining banter (a lot of self-depricating humor), and a good crowd. The set was simple and so was the lighting. There were a few lasers and yes, big balls that were very well used (as seen in that video above). It was very heavy with Viva (all but Cemeteries of London, I think) and the new stuff sounded great. Lost was the highlight of the new stuff for me. The only song I could have done without was Chinese Sleep Chant which seemed forced to me and didn't play well live. It did lead into a dark version of God Put a Smile upon your Face, which was nice. We were lucky to have the electric version of Yellow, which I hadn't heard since I first saw them years ago (the last couple of times was the acoustic version). Politik was another added bonus with fantastic lighting. Unlike the LA show, the piano was out for Chris (they used some pre-recorded tracks in LA). He's quirky enough with the piano and I see him being a disaster without it. He's definitely going to fall off the cat-walk before this tour is over. The show is about 90 minutes long and smackette is convinced that Chris is not capable of staying focused any longer than that. He did completely goof up two outros of new songs when it was just him, so I think she's on to something. The little letters next to some songs on the setlist are alternate stages, but I won't ruin any surprises for you. We were thoroughly entertained by both alternate stages. After a little Bill O'Reilly clip, I was hoping we'd get a clip of Fix You as used in the OC (shout out to Fico, where are you man?), but no. Alas, don't think for a second that it's disappearance stopped me and smackette from acting it out in our seats. They did a great job in the Arena, which good for them but bad for the fan - there's no going back now. We'd definitely see them in a big venue again. and i must add - i think im going to have to watch the OC now. damn it really did have a lot of great music on that show.
  6. I just got my Coldplay lithograph and they managed to give me the incorrect certificate of authentication - and gave me one for Trouble. I ordered the Dont Panic lithograph. No clue whats going on with my shirt. Hopefully this place will get this sorted out. Anyone else have any problems with their order??
  7. Dont Panic in Igby Goes Down. One of my favorite fiilms ever with an amazing soundtrack.
  8. youve spent all day looking for random info about coldplay and concerts in your email to realize how much time youve wasted instead of doing work. and then happily you find this email to realize the time was well spent :) the convo starts at the bottom - with my friend emailing me regarding another board we used to post on in DC. -----Original Message----- From: GoodmanR Sent: Friday, March 11, 2005 4:44 PM To: name deleted Subject: RE: ~~thank god it sold out well you and I would sadly be made fun of, I fear. especially for the fact, we both like keane and snow patrol and yes, coldplay too. im a sucker for those bands. and chris martin, good god…why did he have to marry her… either way, I still like them im excited for the new stuff. ill be following tour info -----Original Message----- From: friend Sent: Friday, March 11, 2005 4:41 PM To: GoodmanR Subject: RE: ~~thank god it sold out they might be cooler. they're making fun of coldplay now. Unfortunately, I still have a weekness for Chris martin even if he did go and marry Gywneth!
  9. I think cameras are allowed but like most museums prob no flash photography. I remember not being able to take pictures of the Mona Lisa.
  10. My favorite band from Isle Of Man, Back Door Slam, are worth checking out. Im not usually a fan of blues-rock music, but this band is just unbelievable. It probably helps that Ive seen them live half a dozen times in just 6 months. While checking my watch at 10:30 last night as Back Door Slam had taken the stage at Bowery Ballroom, I was secretly wishing I still was in CA watching Coldplay. But then Davy's voice and guitars began - and I forgot about everything. With only an EP and a full-length album (2nd album in the works) they played a mind-blowing 90 minute set that took us all by surprise (including the band who looked like at any minute theyd pass out). 2 encores - with an over excited crowd - made me realize when a crowd is appreciative - never stop! It can only be said that Davy Knowles is a guitar god! The way his hands/fingers move on the guitar is unbelievable. Its like all the prior blues guitarists before him were put into him. The vocals are so impressive its hard to imagine a kid at 21 is really singing. Adam on bass and Ross on drums just add to the whole experience. Adam always looks like he's so detached just standing there looking cool, is also damn good. I would have sworn he really does nothing, but watching him play bass last night I realized how much he added. His bass lines are impressive. and him smiling -- too cute - hes the way young one
  11. and i was at 4 of the 5 shows! :D The last night was the most awesome night of the tour as he played everything I had wanted to hear.
  12. heres a bit of an explanation- came across this while reading up on suits and interviews. (or so thats what i keep telling myself im reading ;) ) Trouser Rise The rise is the vertical area between your waistband and your crotch. If your waistband is not resting over your hips, you need a higher (longer) rise. Men who are well endowed by their creator will either dress-left or dress-right. Most men is the U.S. dress-left, so most suits have a tad more width on the upper left leg of the trouser, near the crotch. And while we are on the subject of endowment, full pleats are especially good for those buyers with fuller abdomens. Unless you're dressing like M.C. Hammer, your interview suit trouser leg will have 19 inches of fabric surrounding your knee, and 17 1/2 inches surrounding your ankle (thus you have a tapered trouser leg). The inseam is the length between a man's crotch and the cuffs of his pants. The break is where the cuffs of the pants lightly crumble into the front of the shoe.
  13. heheh some people must be smoking a lot of crack. small town boy from bronski beat ?!? really!!. im still laughing. but the best was 'wheres my mind' from the pixies. man people must be desperate. but when it comes to influences this is my favorite quote from courtney taylor-taylor (dandy warhols), maybe Chris should take on this attitude when people accuse him of plagiarizing. (courtney is a bit pompous tho). I wear my influences like a f***ing badge," proclaims lead singer-songwriter Courtney Taylor regarding Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia. But while the Dandy Warhols liberally steal Rolling Stones riffs, Iggy Pop vocals, Britpop sonic surfing, and even Burt Bacharach horn sections, they give it back in spades, delivering one of the best rock albums of 2000: a masterpiece of sex, beauty, strife, and wry, raunchy-cool attitude.
  14. Thanks for the recap as to how volunteering was. Im trying to volunteer for another show with Oxfam (Bloc Party) as I already have tix for Coldplay here. Ive volunteered at plenty of different things and always hear some lame response. I usually come back with something snarky ;) Sucks to not be able to have sat with your sister. But I think looking back - it will be a great memory. Even when Im dead tired after volunteering - I always feel great the next day. I worked the VIP area at a Summerstage show for Vampire Weekend and had to tell people who were soaking wet from the pouring rain that they couldnt get under the tent. Ive never felt more awful in my life (so at least it wasnt that bad) :) Sucks about people not standing. At the MSG show, someone nearly got kicked out of the arena, because he refused to sit and the people behind him got mad. Ive never seen such ridiculousness. C'mon people stand up for 90 mins of your life and have fun - it never killed anyone :) And you were there on night 1. For that im insanely jealous. October is way too far away.
  15. Ah - I guess it would help if I still lived in Cali, but since I havent for years - it'd make sense why i dont seem to hear about it as much. He's always sold out all his LA shows from what I recall.
  16. While searching through some ticket stubs I found one of my prized possessions. I was kind of obsessed with The Smiths/Morrissey in college. Most my friends (including me) had pieces of Morrissey's shirt from one of the shows when the crowd went kind of nuts (understatement of the year). Anyway - if I had a scanner Id scan this. The World Famous KROQ Presents: THE SMITHS CONVENTION with very special guests: MIKE JOYCE & ANDY ROURKE Sunday February 23rd, 1997 2:00pm Pasadena Convention Center 300 E Green Street Pasadena, CA Yeah - it was pretty cool hanging out with a bunch of other obsessed Smiths fans. I wish this kind of stuff still happened (and perhaps it does - ive just not heard of others).
  17. 1. First related Coldplay memory? Hearing "Yellow" on a San Francisco radio station - and thinking what a f'ing rip-off of Travis. 2. Have you ever seen the band live in concert, if so where? 9/16/02 - Pier Six - Baltimore, MD 5/14/05 - HFStival - Baltimore, MD 9/30/05 - Bristow, VA 6/23/08 - MSG - NYC 6/27/08 - Today Show - NYC 10/26/08 - NJ 3.a Favorite Coldplay album? Parachutes - but lately Viva La Vida b. Favorite Coldplay song? Shiver/Don't Panic c. Favorite Coldplay video? The Scientist 4. Most treasured Coldplay item in your collection? Singles, albums, ticket stubs and the print I just ordered 5. What was your craziest fanatic moment regarding Coldplay (ie. did you have to go at great lengths to see them live? did you do something really dramatic to defend Coldplay? etc etc.) I had moved to Virginia from California for a guy I was in love with. And I used to go to a *ton* of concerts (which is an understatement). My boyfriend really disliked doing public things and the only show he had to see was The Stereophonics. I was cool with that - I love them. But when i found out Coldplay was coming around I begged him to see a few shows nearby with me. We agreed on one show and I bought the tickets months ahead of time.... we broke up and I had no clue how to get to Baltimore and wasnt very comfortable with the whole new area. I begged him to go with me and surprisingly we had a great time. I mean it was torture seeing Coldplay with an ex and seeing them at the Pier was more than one should put up with. Couples making out everywhere, holding hands. Oh it broke my heart. I realized after I gave up so much of myself for him and said never again. 2 shows in one year makes me laugh. But to this day him and I are still great friends. It helps that he lives in VA and im in NYC - so we only see each other a few times a year and thats great - and no - id never bring him to a coldplay concert again. I now see most CP shows with my best friend in VA. Fuck boyfriends - they come and go - friendships are forever.
  18. Living in NYC - Im coming to see the demise of The Times and at the same time The New Yorker. I thought both had credibility. NYT's article on CP's myspace page = waste of time. If they want to lose readers (well i gave up a long time ago) - theyre on a good path. More disgusting is the New Yorker's cover with Obama dressed in Muslim attire and Michelle looking like a terrorist. Made me nearly sick to my stomach. I guess New York hates Obama and CP. See - they all loved Hillary - and I believe Chris mentioned Obama's name at one point or another. Gotta be a conspiracy. I just wonder what the hell is wrong with New York lately esp when it comes to news (or what we pretend it is).
  19. This was overheard at a Doves show "you rock more than Coldplay". I found this quite funny, as I was at the show (I dont recall that, but I do remember Jimi not in a great mood and the show not so great). Ah - the joys of DC shows. So many times everyone complains about the crowd - thank god im in NYC! (and Im not sure what is with 2005 and all the references to Coldplay in any band playing in DC 2005, but its everywhere). May 24, 2005 Doves at the 9:30 Club Photo by Kyle Gustafson We think something irked Doves last night at the 9:30 Club, considering their abrupt exit from stage following "There Goes the Fear." Part of it may have started when during a slight lull early on someone in the crowd yelled "You rock more than Coldplay!" Perhaps that declaration was backhanded criticism, perhaps it was a compliment. What ever it was, it seemed that could have struck a raw nerve, and Doves, who have carved out a devoted fan base with their distinct Manchester sound, seemed to be slightly annoyed with the Washington crowd. The performance -- which primarily tapped from the trio's solid past work from Lost Souls and the Last Broadcast -- was executed flawlessly (with a few minor audio issues) and the band's expertise in the multi-layering of sound was impressive. But something was missing. While there were certainly devoted fans (even attracting a starstruck younger girl trying to sneak in backstage through the left balcony claiming she had just had just undergone a kidney transplant and needed to see the band from back stage because of her catheter ... after being denied she promptly lit a cigarette, which is probably just perfect for someone with fresh organ work), Doves failed to engage the quasi-stoic Monday night audience. And that's a shame, because the show could have been an animated experience for everyone. We agree with Matt of Blog Shamblogg: My disgustingly high hopes for the show may have knocked it down a peg in my mind, but it was certainly an incredible experience, and I hope that the rest of the crowd realizes just how special a band Doves is (are?). But we aren't sure if the crowd did. And yet another DCist article (whom I really cant stand)... Man these guys are snarky. After hearing an advanced copy of Idlewild's latest album, Warnings / Promises, during a road trip to Detroit back in June, DCist thought it was the beginning of the end for Idlewild. Our first reaction to the new album's mostly acoustic based rock had us fearing they had spent too much time touring with Coldplay and were turning into the new Crosby, Stills and Nash. But we were unable to spend time with that record due to our brief trip so we humbly made the trip to the Black Cat to let the band prove us wrong and see if they still had the goods live. And we are very happy to report that they did and they do. blah blah blah ****** And Idlewild lived up to everything and more. granted my friend is good friends with the band and we were hanging out afterwards with everyone for a bit. Now if only her friend could work as part of the stage crew with Coldplay my life would be set!
  20. I just realized that Echo & The Bunnymen actually played with Coldplay at the HFStival in 2005. But Coldplay was headlining and Ian & Co. had an earlier slot. I was beyond excited to be seeing Echo for my first time. I had seen Ian with Electrafixion but this would be the real thing. Ian was so trashed, had no voice and insisted the crowd sing along. By the second or third song I was disgusted and they left citing fatigue or some such BS. The crowd booed them off the stage. The Cutter will never be the same. Which is ironic as I type this, as Im seeing Echo & The Bunnymen again in October. I will add Coldplay was f'ing brilliant! It was the highlight of my day/night. And a bigger thrill was coming across a few Coldplay tix packed away with other such memorabilia.
  21. well that was 2 years worth of seeing music. I just moved to NYC in 2006 and was determined to see as much as possible. 08 is disappointing - as im going flat broke but im also seeing more diverse acts this year (or so i tell myself). 07 is a bit scary rereading it. i amaze myself when i realize ive seen a band before that i didnt even know who they were (ie some obscure openers). Highlights of 08 thus far - Emmanuel Jal - rapper/hip-hop artist from Sudan performing at a premiere of his film "War Chiild" based on his life as a child soldier. and MV Bill (with Chuck D of Public Enemy) at the National Geographic headquarters in DC - a movie and performance about Hip Hop in the City of God. 4Real is using artists/actors to bring awareness to places like Sudan, City of God -- (maybe CM/Coldplay will get involved and then my friend can bring me to meet him at Nat Geo - that'd be way awesome).

Art Brut admittedly arent the most talented group of guys, but they are by far one of the most entertaining bands. 3x in one year, I’m on a roll. F * 6/9 - The Spinto Band (Delaware), Lovely Feathers (Montreal), Dr Dog (PA) - Bowery Ballroom - NYC * 6/27 - The Grates (Australia, who admittedly I only stayed for 2 songs), The Lovely Feathers (Montreal) - Mercury Lounge - NYC * 6/28 - Liam and Me (Phila, PA) This was the opening band, but the only act I wanted to see - Bowery Ballroom - NYC * 6/30 - The Futureheads (UK), French Kicks (NYC) who are one of the Worst live bands out there - Webster Hall, NYC * 7/10 - Toad The Wet Sprocket (Santa Barbara, CA) where I went to school, Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers - Irving Plaza - NYC - This by far was one of the best shows I saw. I got to meet most of the people who work with Toad, and it was cool meeting all the Californians. Glen still has an amazing voice. Check out his solo stuff Glen Phillips. They played nearly every song I could have asked for - save one - One Little Girl, which is my favorite song. I begged for them to play it, no luck for me. Didn’t matter to me, I love the boys of Toad. * 7/15 - GRock Radio Festival - Joey Harrison’s Surf Club - New Jersey - On the beach, baby! Artists: Dramarama (OMG! I hadn’t seen them since High School. Last Cigarette, Last Cigarette, Last Cigarette one before I go to bed. Wow! Can I just say how awesome this show was. Tom has an amazing voice, but this show just rocked! * 8/15 - Dirty Pretty Things (UK), Scissors for Lefty (SF, CA) - Bowery Ballroom - NYC . Another great band from the UK. Carl Barat, even with arm in sling, and company played one awesome set. Scissors for lefty - pure pop bliss were entertaining and very good. The lead singer even turned up in the crowd snapping pics when DPT were on stage. * 9/7 - Birdmonster (SF, CA), Catfish Haven (Chicago, IL), Someone still loves you, Boris Yeltsin (Springfield, MO) - Mercury Lounge - NYC . Birdmonster - To Pete: I LOVE You! This sums up my experience with birdmonster. 23. Wow! The Palace Fires. I must say Im in love with the band - well mostly because it has some former Gene members, but they are quite good. And Ra Ra Riot I have seen more times than should be allowed. Alexandra is quite nice as well as the rest of the band.
  24. Thursday is my favorite song from them. I could listen to it _all_ the time!
  25. Coldplay Blur editors Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin Cut Off Your Hands
