wow, so they're playing Deep Blue too. Looks amazing.

alright review time...

Well what can I say to start things off?

First of all they were so amazing live! I saw them back in 2007 before, but honestly didn't appreciate that concert as much as I did afterwards. I think that this concert topped the other one. Not only did the band sound extremely tight but they played such an exciting setlist that got the whole crowd moving around.

The band came on stage right around 9:30, and started the set with Ready to Start. It was a great way to start off the concert and the whole crowd was into the song. It being one of my favorite songs off the new album, they were able to get it to sound really great live. Next came Neighborhood #2 that really seemed to get the crowd extra pumped for the show. Then was No Cars Go that to me is one of my favorites to see live. Then came Haiti that featured of course Regine's vocals on the song. Though she may have gotten off key at times it still was such a great song to see live and I also liked how they extended the ending. Then came Empty Room (one of my favorites off the new album), that had great harmonies from both Win and Regine. After Empty Room was Intervention which I enjoyed, but it is definitely one of my least favorite AF songs. Next up was Rococo. Honestly this song has been a huge obsession with mine. Since most of the crowd didn't know the song I felt I was one of the few that was singing along. At this time fireworks were going off, so with that... seeing the song live and singing along it was one of the highlights of the show. Next up was Crown of Love. I have always loved this song, but for some reason seeing it live at that point in time made me really feel how heart-wrenching the song is. It's such a great song live and by the end the whole crowd was dancing along. Then came two more songs from the new album Deep Blue and We Used to Wait. Win announced before Deep Blue that it was the first time they ever played that one live. We Used to Wait was also great live!

After those songs came to me what was quite possibly the highlight of the show, which interestingly enough was the highlight of my previous AF show. This was playing Neighborhood #3 and Rebellion back to back. Power Out had so much energy that the crowd was going crazy through out it. As the song ended they transitioned seamlessly into Rebellion which gave me chills for quite some time. Having such a Powerful song like Powerout and then a flood of instruments followed by the start of Rebellion is somehting that is unmatched and honestly one of the greatest concert experiences anyone can witness.

After the epicness of Neighborhood #3/Rebellion (Lies) was Month of May that was another great song for the crowd though perhaps the crowd may have been overwhelmed by the previous two songs... I know I was :P

Then to close out the main set was Half Light II. Both half Light songs have really grown on me a lot and are among my favorites of the new album. It was extremely great live. I feel the song to be somewhat nostalgic in it's sound and seeing it live gave me the same feeling. Though it was great live I don't feel it was a good song to end the main set with.

The band then left the stage and came back on a few songs later for the encore. Opening it with Neighborhood #1, the crowd went crazy as soon as the main melody came in. The piano of the song is very holiday-esque and could be really seen by how the band then used confetti at the end of the song to make it seem like it was snowing. Even Win joked how it's Christmas all over again. After Neighborhood #1 was then a real treat for me. They played Sprawl II. Honestly this song has been probably my most listened to song these last few weeks. I was automatically drawn to this song first listen. This song was great live! With Regine's perfect singing and dancing around, honestly this song was by far one of the highlights of the show!

Lastly there is no AF show without Wake Up and that is what they ended the show with. It was so incredible to see everyone sing along to the song! At the end everyone started dancing and it was quite a magical moment to really see the strong connection between the live band and crowd.

Overall it was such an amazing show! Definitely one of the best shows I've ever gone to! I have never seen a crowd so into the songs!

Sounds amazing, got me excited now.

Overall it was such an amazing show! Definitely one of the best shows I've ever gone to! I have never seen a crowd so into the songs!
Ha, that tends to happen. But how did you not get excited about them in 2007? I have to say that's pretty difficult. :D

Whaa, so they are filming the audience/band members again? The way they did that really annoyed me last times cause I couldn't spot the cameras. But the confetti looks pretty awesome. :nice:

I listened to the album for the first time last night and while I wasn't blown away, it has potential (and my father agreed). At first I was afraid it might be too long, but luckily that wasn't the case. Actually I was kind of disappointed that it ended and I immediately wanted to listen again. A good sign. In a couple of listens I'm pretty sure I'm going to LOVE the album. The only thing that kind of disappointed me was the lack of Régine. I'd expected to hear her more and while Sprawls II is pretty good, it's nowhere near In The Backseat.

Thank you Coldplaying.com!

In these last few weeks, I have got round to listening to all three of Arcade Fire's albums (I never listened to them before, I've always wanted to, just never got round to it!)

And I have to say...I am in love with the band. Thank you for getting me into a new band which I am sure I will listen to for years to come :)

^^

you wont regret your decision. this is the band they will be talking about for decades to come.

Ha, that tends to happen. But how did you not get excited about them in 2007? I have to say that's pretty difficult. :D

I mean I really did enjoy the concert a lot and was excited. But I guess at that point I wasn't as excited or into the band as I was after the show.

thanks for the review and pictures :) I really hope to see them live someday

I got my vinyl yesterday :awesome: they only had the "basic" one with the palmtree thingy so I had to get that one, when I buy the CD though (when the price goes down a bit, I think it's weird that the CD is 20 euros and the vinyl is 25 right now here) I'll buy it with some other cover :wacky: I'm just now about the get off this chair and go listen to it!

I read the vinyl will have only 1 cover and the cd's the 8 different ones

Arcade Fire's Win Butler Talks Live Webcast, Spike Jonze Short Film

It's a big week in Arcade Fire land. The band released their third straight Best New Music LP, The Suburbs, and they're celebrating with two gigs at New York City's famed Madison Square Garden. Not too shabby for an uncompromising independent rock group.

What's more, eccentric filmmaker Terry Gilliam (12 Monkeys, Brazil) is directing a webcast of the August 5 MSG show, which airs on YouTube/Vevo at 10 p.m. EDT. We recently had a quick chat with AF leader Win Butler about the webcast and Gilliam as well as an upcoming film collaboration with director Spike Jonze.

Pitchfork: How did you guys get Terry Gilliam involved in shooting the webcast at Madison Square Garden?

Win Butler: The opportunity to film the show came up at the last minute, and we just gave him a call. We knew it was gonna be a long shot, but the timing was perfect. He's my total hero. My favorite English teacher in high school showed me Brazil when I was 15 and it blew my mind. It's one of those movies that's revealed itself in different ways as I've gone back to it over the years.

With a lot of my favorite records-- like Blonde on Blonde-- every time I listen to it I'm like, "Oh yeah, this song's on this record?" even though I've heard it 100,000 times. I have the same experience with Brazil. When I was 15, it was overwhelming; I don't think I got half of what was going on. I wasn't like, "That's my favorite film," as much as I was like, "What just happened to me?" I watched it again when I was 18 and had a much better grasp on it. When I was older, the nuance of the love story probably hit home a lot more, but I probably related to the science fiction-y elements when I was younger.

Pitchfork: Was he familiar with your music when you contacted him?

WB: Yeah, he'd come to see us play in Brixton on the last tour with Heath Ledger, actually. We sent him a copy of The Suburbs and I guess he moved from rural Minnesota to somewhere in the San Fernando Valley in the 50s, so he had the classic experience growing up in the suburbs where they had just cut down the orange groves and set up this totally prefabricated community. He was talking about how it reminded him of his youth even though it was this cross-generational thing. I think filmmakers all secretly wanna be musicians and all musicians secretly wanna be filmmakers.

Pitchfork: How is it going to be different than a normal live concert webcast?

WB: We're not sure yet. It's fun because it's so last minute. That's the way this band always works. In the early days, my biggest frustration was like, "What do you mean you can't book a tour a week before it's supposed to happen? That's crazy." Terry is coming out to Montreal and he's gonna ride on the bus with us and hang out and shoot ideas around. It's a new medium. It's like having a live TV program and you have a certain amount of time to fill and be creative and have fun with it.

Pitchfork: Do you remember any concert films you watched growing up that had an affect on you?

WB: I was a huge Cure fan in high school and I really liked The Cure in Orange. It's in this old amphitheater in France and Robert Smith had short hair-- that was like the most powerful thing in the film. Like, "Wow, his hair's short. What the hell? I can see his face."

Pitchfork: That's funny because when you guys first started doing shows for this tour, a lot of people were talking about your hair as well-- on the internet, at least. [laughs]

WB: Being in a rock band, I feel a certain responsibility to have a weird haircut. I mean, who else gets to do that? [laughs]

Pitchfork: As far as airing the concert across the internet, I feel like some bands wouldn't want to give things away like that, especially at the beginning of a tour. Was that a concern for you?

WB: I'll take any opportunity I can get for people to engage with the actual art. There are so many bands that I'm kind of aware of through media about them, and it ends up filtering my experience of the actual music. It's strange being in a time where rock radio and MTV-- two of the ways I was exposed to music when I was younger-- have really shifted so much that it's increasingly difficult for people to actually hear the music itself. I find myself a lot more open to bands if I just hear their song; if I see a band on "SNL" I'll be like, "Oh, I like that Vampire Weekend song." It gives you an opportunity to engage with the thing itself and not be overwhelmed by everything else that surrounds it.

Pitchfork: As far as stuff like that goes, it seems that when you licensed "Wake Up" for the Super Bowl and gave the proceeds to Haiti relief efforts, it was the best of both worlds; everybody gets exposed to your music, but it's not crass.

WB: That was very much an emergency situation and we were trying to figure out ways to make money fast to help Haiti. It was just such a no-brainer. At that time, I pretty much said we'd be open to licensing stuff we'd normally say no to-- but we still couldn't do a car commercial for "Keep the Car Running" because it would change the song forever. Even in the emergency situation, there are still lines we couldn't quite bring ourselves across.

Pitchfork: I read that you guys worked with Spike Jonze recently, was that for a music video?

WB: It's not a video. It's a short film; we're still working on it. It's like a science-fiction B-movie companion piece for the record.

Basically, we played Spike some music from the album and the first images that came to his mind had the same feeling as this idea for a science fiction film I had when I was younger. My brother and I and Spike wrote it together, which was really fun-- it was like total amateur hour.

We shot it in Austin and a lot of kids are in the film, and it was great just hanging out with these 15-year-olds for a week and writing down all the funny things they said. It was cool to revert to being a 15-year-old for a little while.

Pitchfork: Do you know how long it will be?

WB: I don't. That would be good to know... we run a really tight ship here at Arcade Fire. [laughs]

Pitchfork: It's not bad how you can go from doing this free-form thing with Spike Jonze and then get Terry Gilliam to film a show at Madison Square Garden.

WB: It surprises us, too. Everything like is like, "Really? We get to do this? OK, well, we're gonna do it like this. Is that OK? It is? All right. Bye." [laughs]
