Dejan
The next record will be full of "love songs" or chris will be able to take a new direction and write songs about other things ? I love all the 3 albums to death but i think they needs to change the topics of their songs. Chris is an amazing songwriter and the 3 coldplay albums are amazing,in your opinion chris will be able to write DEEP songs like, for example, Empty Sky - You're Missing - My City Of Ruins - Into the fire (bruce springsteen). I'd like to listen to some DEEP records from the coldplay....

frostbitepanda
...I wasn't aware that Coldplay songs or their albums weren't deep. Chris has said himself many times, however, that his lyrics aren't very scintific and that people probably won't be analysing them 10 years to come. But, really, if you think about it, they really don't have many love songs. In fact, their love songs aren't really... well... love songs. A Message and perhaps Swallowed in the Sea are the only two I can think of. Perhaps Kingdom Come. But Yellow is the only "love song" from Parachutes. "The Scientist" and perhaps "Amsterdam" the only ones from AROBTTH. Besides, either way, who says Coldplay need to be quote, unquote "deep". Maybe they're so popular because they cut off all the metaphor and such and get strait to the point, making they're songs very direct, in turn, making their stuff unobtuse and more emotive. In my opinion. And not everyone can pull that off.

victaniac
Clocks is also a love song, but see the way Chris does it...it's not as obvious as one may think. Most people have no idea what Clocks is about. I think they're lyrics are very good and if he tries to get "deeper" or "artsy", he'll just be compared to Thom Yorke more so, again. stevemah
I hope on the next album the other members in the band will write songs. I know they do write their parts and make a genuine contriubion on the songs at the moment, but i'd like to hear songs written by will, guy and johnny. Like Chris brings songs to the band to work on, i'd just like to see them all bringing songs in to work on. just my thoughts :) Steve
frostbitepanda
What are you talking about when you say "other things"?? Politik - Human equality A Rush of Blood To The Head - Committing an act of violence to protect someone you love Speed of Sound - Miracles Square One - Inertia Twisted Logic - The future of humankind Fix You - loss Spies - insecurties and past demons Just to name a few. And no, I've never heard those Springsteen songs you speak of, but I do respect him, and enjoy alot of his music. However, they aren't Bruce springsteen. So you can't really use him as an example, or anyone else for that matter. They're Coldplay, and they write a few love songs here and there, but they're stuff is realatable and that's what makes them great. They talk about stuff people can really understand. "Deep" stuff is great, but Coldplay is Coldplay. If Chris tries to write "deeper" lyrics then it'll seem forced and contrived. The songs he writes just come out, and it's something you can really tell in thier music. Just my two cents.

Dejan
You're Missing lyrics Bruce Springsteen Shirts in the closet, shoes in the hall Mama's in the kitchen, baby and all Everything is everything Everything is everything But you're missing Coffee cups on the counter, jackets on the chair Papers on the doorstep, but you're not there Everything is everything Everything is everything But you're missing Pictures on the nightstand, TV's on in the den Your house is waiting, your house is waiting For you to walk in, for you to walk in But you're missing, when I shut out the lights You're missing, when I close my eyes You're missing, when I see the sun rise You're missing Children are asking if it's alright Will you be in our arms tonight? Morning is morning, the evening falls I got Too much room in my bed, to many phone calls How's everything, everything? Everything, everything You're missing, you're missing God's drifting in heaven, devil's in the mailbox I got dust on my shoes, nothing but teardrops ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Empty Sky lyrics Bruce Springsteen I woke up this morning I could barely breathe Just an empty impression In the bed there you used to be I want a kiss from your lips I want an eye for an eye I woke up this morning to an empty sky Empty sky, empty sky I woke up this morning to an empty sky Empty sky, empty sky I woke up this morning to an empty sky Blood on the streets Blood flowin' down I hear the blood of my blood Cryin' from the ground Empty sky, empty sky I woke up this morning to an empty sky Empty sky, empty sky I woke up this morning to an empty sky On the plains of Jordan I cut my bow from the wood Of this tree of evil Of this tree of good I want a kiss from your lips I want an eye for an eye I woke up this morning to the empty sky ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My City Of Ruins Lyrics Bruce Springsteen There is a blood red circle On the cold dark ground And the rain is falling down The church door's thrown open I can hear the organ's song But the congregation's gone My city of ruins My city of ruins Now the sweet bells of mercy Drift through the evening trees Young men on the corner Like scattered leaves, The boarded up windows, The empty streets While my brother's down on his knees My city of ruins My city of ruins Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up! Now's there's tears on the pillow Darlin' where we slept And you took my heart when you left Without your sweet kiss My soul is lost, my friend Tell me how do I begin again? My city's in ruins My city's in ruins Now with these hands, With these hands, With these hands, I pray Lord With these hands, With these hands, I pray for the strength, Lord With these hands, With these hands, I pray for the faith, Lord We pray for your love, Lord We pray for the lost, Lord We pray for this world, Lord We pray for the strength, Lord We pray for the strength, Lord Come on Come on Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Into The Fire lyrics Bruce Springsteen The sky was falling and streaked with blood I heard you calling me, then you disappeared into the dust Up the stairs, into the fire Up the stairs, into the fire I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire May your strength give us strength May your faith give us faith May your hope give us hope May your love give us love May your strength give us strength May your faith give us faith May your hope give us hope May your love give us love You gave your love to see, in fields of red and autumn brown You gave your love to me and lay your young body down Up the stairs, into the fire Up the stairs, into the fire I need you near, but love and duty called you someplace higher Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire May your strength give us strength May your faith give us faith May your hope give us hope May your love give us love May your strength give us strength May your faith give us faith May your hope give us hope May your love give us love May your strength give us strength May your faith give us faith May your hope give us hope May your love give us love It was dark, too dark to see, you held me in the light you gave You lay your hand on me Then walked into the darkness of your smoky grave Up the stairs, into the fire Up the stairs, into the fire I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire May your strength give us strength May your faith give us faith May your hope give us hope May your love give us love May your strength give us strength May your faith give us faith May your hope give us hope May your love give us love May your strength give us strength May your faith give us faith May your hope give us hope May your love give us love May your strength give us strength May your faith give us faith May your hope give us hope May your love give us love May your love bring us love

This band deals with emotions... All their work so far have been about feelings and stuff and their lyrics have always been oblique. To write the kind of deep album you're talking about would require them to be far more precise and specific, which they've always avoided on their songs... They voice their opinions via other channels e.g. MTF. I think they have consciously decided not to make overt protest music and also not to mix their main work i.e. making music with politics. It would be interesting I admit, but I think they've decided it just wouldn't be "Coldplay"

girlygirl
I agree to a point i would like them to maybe get a couple of faster songs. but in the same respect i mean it's not like the guys can say ok today we are gonna write about world peace. you can't just turn it on and off what comes out comes out. And Frostbitpanda has it right i mean what other things are you talking about? Also this you have to realize most people that write these "deep" songs probley weren't writing them with plans of them being so deep. I think they have a good formula going with there songs I mean thats what makes them coldplay right?
Dejan
It looks like they don't wanna change their "winning formula". They are great @ what they do but if they stick to the same formula even for the next record i think they're limited as a band and chris as a songwriter. Don't get me wrong......i love all their records but the next album must be different!

They are great @ what they do but if they stick to the same formula even for the next record i think they're limited as a band and chris as a songwriter. Don't get me wrong......i love all their records but the next album must be different! Read the interview on e-zine 14 http://www.coldplay.com/content/ezine/documents/ezine14.pdf Excerpt from p7... Again for me, my favourites are the tracks that are the most departure from the last 2 albums. Was the departure deliberate or as a result of what you were listening to at the time? C (Chris): It’s just trying to do things that keep you excited. I’m obviously at a strange point at the moment cos it’s the day before the album comes out. We’ve spent 2 months talking about it and the only reaction I’ve got is from critics you know. Some of it’s been incredible and some of it’s been terrible so I’m really confused about it. But I know that every song that’s on the record has something about it that I thought, ‘we haven’t done this before’, similarly we also stayed true to the same ideals that we had on the last album. I see it as the end of a trilogy to be honest. I see the first 3 as one collection of songs. Does that mean that you already know where you are going next? C: No, I just know that........ (long pause) That you’ve come full circle? C: Yeah. I think so. All I'm trying to say is... It might just be possible that they will look and go a whole new direction in the album(s) after this. I sure as hell do know that they can do more than what they've put in their albums so far! After X&Y they would have proven that they can be "big", make very mainstream music and sell many records. After which, they might be inclined to try out their hand at being "exciting" (i.e. original) and cutting-edge/avant-garde. We might finally see then how far their creative powers can stretch.
