Troubled rocker Pete Doherty avoided jail this morning, but reportedly owes a massive undisclosed sum to the Malmaison Hotel in Clerkenwell after he "caused mayhem" there over the weekend.

 

He stayed in the £200-a-night suite at the hotel in Charterhouse Square between Thursday and Sunday with a female companion - not, apparently, love interest Kate Moss.

In that time he caused thousands of pounds' worth of damage by breaking just about every piece of furniture in sight. He also disrupted a wedding party, set off the fire alarm, and started a fist fight in the bar before fleeing in the early hours of Sunday morning when the police were called. "I've never seen anything like it," a Malmaison spokesman reportedly said. "He's ripped down every wall light fitting, torn down the curtains, smashed every mirror, broken all the lamps, upturned all the furniture and wrecked the telephone and internet connection sockets.

"There's evidence that he took drugs in the room, the carpet's wrecked, there are smashed bottles and make-up everywhere, and the place is covered in blood.

"He'd been a nuisance for two days but matters came to a head when he set off a fire alarm at around one o'clock on Sunday morning. He then had a punch-up in the bar. Glasses were thrown as well.

"He was sent to his room after that to cool off but appears to have gone berserk in there.

"He left when he heard police were on their way. We are speaking to his manager at the moment to sort out payment. We intend to charge him for the cost of clearing the room and for the cost of the room itself each night it is out of use, which is £200.

"The bill will run in to thousands of pounds. He caused mayhem."

Doherty was fined £770 for five counts of possessing drugs including crack cocaine and heroin at Thames Magistrates Court in London on Monday.

The Babyshambles frontman, 27, was also disqualified from driving for four months at a sentencing at Thames Magistrates' Court in east London.

Doherty had previously pleaded guilty to counts of possessing heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine, and to two counts of possessing cannabis in April and August this year
