Backstage at brixton peter and i were talking about how clued in mike skinner is(peter had just done some nme thing with him, i’m sure you’ll see it this week or next), and how hapless we are. Peter said he’d asked him who is publicist is, and i said, “whats a publicist?”. He answered “-exactly”.

Well apparently a publicist is the person who’d yell at me for writing this kind of post. something to do with words like ‘spin’ and ‘damage limitation’. well fuck that, i’m supposed to be on tour with shambles noisettes and holloways and i dare say at least a handful of folk would like to know why we’re not. so bollocks to it i’m gonna just say what i know, what i feel.

 

For starters i’m fucking gutted. I love playing, i love touring. and i cannot stand no-shows. fucking no-shows, what the fuck?! how hard can it be to play a rock & roll show? and as some of you have pointed out on this forum, if you ain’t gonna play the show, at least let people know more than a few hours before. preferably don’t book said shows if the slightest possibility if it fucking up lurks. Should be as simple as that shouldn’t it.

 

Ok so thats the ‘how i feel’ bit. now ‘what i know’. my band leader, singer and friend is not well. that has to come first. cut to a month ago: when we meet, put our heads together and he says “i want to do this tour”, i feel elated and fired up. when i hammer home the fact that we mustn’t let people down(not the voyuers, but the decent folk who stand by us and our music, despite the endless tiresome procrastination), and he still assures me its the right thing to do, then we believe in him, his conviction. so we book the tour and launch into it with giddy aplomb. But recently he’s learning to explain more clearly to us whats unfolding in his mind, but seemingly only as it happens. he can’t predict the future any more than any of us can. and we(the band) have to and want to do whats right for him. as he wants to do whats right for everyone. incidentally this is not meant as an apology(though i DO apologise, with all of my exausted heart), but as an honest account of my present (albeit bruised)perspective. on one side, a cherished friend who’s actually trying to make good and acknoledge his spiralling self control and act on it. On the other, an ongoing desire to show those who have stood by us(largely you lot) through disappointment after let down after relapse after nth fuck up after...after.........basically i want us to come good and two gnarled broken dirty crooked fingers up to those who say we’re a lost cause, to those who say we don’t care. but i cannot and should not let that come before a loved one’s well being and mental health. i won’t go into it but after brixton there was hell up. he’s told us(and we could see) he couldn’t deal with being on the road so soon after rehab. he knows he needs to calm it down, continue with the (NA)meetings and generally gather his faculties. That he(or anyone in his circumstances)could see and express that is a breakthrough. outside fucking our fans around(yet again)this is actually a triumph. and we stand by his decision. i know this ain’t any consolation, but i wanted to let you my thoughts. perhaps i should just get a publicist. whatever the fuck a publicist is.
