🌙 COLDPLAY ANNOUNCE MOON MUSIC OUT OCTOBER 4TH 🎵

Sheryl Crow defends Coldplay against critics

Singer Shery Crow has leaped to the defence of Coldplay following a critical backlash against the British band in the US. The phenomenally successful Chris Martin-fronted four-piece have recently suffered at the hands of American music writers. Crow says, "They've had some scathing reviews in the US. The New York Times just wrote a study in why to hate them. Unfair, I think."

^X&Y made them a really big, popular band and many people just don't like that. I have friends that turn on bands as soon as they "make it".. something I'll never understand. But most times, people just don't like Chris and therefore don't like Coldplay...senseless.

Anyway, three cheers for Sheryl! :cheesy:

I just want to scream at every stupid "arty" kid I know who refuses to listen to a band because they have a name that is recognizable. :dozey: I just hate how f*cking pretentious music critics are. Why can't everyone just freaking like what they like, without thinking about the popularity and likeability and shagability of the band.....jeeeez.

I wish somebody would make a sign out of this fact and hang it up at every record store and every recording studio and make commercials out of it. Maybe I'll make my own signs that say "Music snobs think all big bands are shitty and that indie bands are music saviors" and put them up around the world.

Hello, I'm new. :)

I just wanted to ask...why wouldn't someone like Chris? lol Does he have some kind of bad reputation or something? I've heard a lot of people hate on his wife, but as far as him...he seems pretty cool!

I don't think it is X&Y which I think is their most developed album to date and is a real progression on their sound, but it is the fact that they OVERPLAYED the US in 2005/2006. I mean, they played all over the place, in small towns etc, probably just to please the record company and this led to the inevitable backlash. I mean, you have a choice to play places like Buenos Aires, but you play El Paso Texas??? I think it would have been much better for them to play the US once (not 2 or 3 times like they did) and play more diverse places like South Africa and more of Asia. Even more of South America - there are fans around the world apart from the US (surprise surprise). Always leave people/fans wanting more. For US/Canadian fans this tour, they saw way too much of Coldplay. I think that was the problem.

The singles released in the U.S. made a big deal of how the band is percieved.

Well there are many things they could've done to make this album come off as the truly magnificent piece of work it is. People in general tend to not be open minded about music and lash out at anything the media will tell them to. Coldplay just happens to be at the end of that stick along with any other band that 'sounds' like Coldplay. Makes no difference how heartfelt or melodic the music is.. how positive it is.. any band will get put down for it. If the music industry were not an industry things would be different. Maybe Kurt Cobain would still be alive. Maybe hiphop would've stayed hiphop and not have morphed into this money-infested ego-fest. And maybe.. Coldplay would get the recognition they deserve and the appreciation for their music from those that have the power to spread the word that this great band is making some of the best music of our time.

As for the singles issue.. picture this:

Single 1: Square One - Redefining Coldplay's sound to the world.

Single 2: What If - This underrated number would've vaulted Coldplay into another universe. Its a very very very powerful song.

Single 3: Talk - They definitely did not go wrong with this single.

Single 4: A Message - Perhaps THE most underrated/forgotten song off of x&y. I can't think of a single reason this song did not get the attention it desereved. Leaving the x&y segment of the band's career with this song would've left a deep mark on the music world.

Songs like Fix You and Speed Of Sound.. may or may not have had the impact they during the live shows if not released as singles, BUT it was definitely an obvious marketing scheme to release the only two songs from x&y that could've been mistaken for singles off of AROBTTH. Great numbers no less.

Another thing I've been pondering.. picture this as well..

what if Coldplay had released the albums in reverse.

1st album X&Y, 2nd AROBTTH, and Parachutes the latest album.

Haven't really seen any "innovative/electronic/progressive/alternative" bands release work that goes in reverse. Complicated/layered music to slightly more simple yet meaningful music.

What if Yellow was just released last year.. and SOS or Fix You were the songs to put Coldplay on the map.

HMMMMM.

Oh and yeah.. even though it wasn't much, nice of Sheryl to stand up and say something about it.

On that note. Fuck the media. They're like vultures without stomachs.

Peace.

Hey nevaehdreamz! I think you'd be surprised how many people dislike Chris. Many say he's just a Bono-wanna be and overly ambitious or what have you. And I've heard of a lot of people not liking Gwyneth and that makes them dislike Chris too.. and then that makes them dislike Coldplay. It's all quite stupid, really.

Incubus. Started off very strong and kinda crazy.. music all over the place. To albums like Morning View where they actually got slower and a bit smarter. Nothing ever changes though, people still said at the time that they sold out. Something I've often noticed with a lot of different bands, is that fans don't generally give artists much room for growth and change. A bit sad.

face it..there is always going to be backlash in one way or another...people are going to say good, others are going to say bad...i just say the fans should stick away from the haters..and discuss amongst themselves whether they like it or not....remember the only thing that is important is if you urself like it

I'm "verklempt". Just like Mike Meyers's Jewish lady on Saturday Night Live. Maybe we SHOULD just talk amongst ourselves...what does anyone else think? Well, I do admit I cannot go a single day without hearing Coldplay. Does this make me weird? I do also listen to Sufjan Stevens, Calexico, Wilco, Neil Young , Frou Frou, Elbow, Joni Mitchell, the Bulgarian Chorus and other fine artists. But guess I am addicted to Coldplay. :stunned:

But he's so sweet and funny and...seemingly laid back. :dozey: It just seems wrong! lol

So guilt by association I guess? I know a lot of people don't like Gwyneth, they say she's pretty snobby, but Chris doesn't come off that way at all. And a Bono wannabe? Pshh.
