Midlake

Featured Replies

Midlake are a five piece band hailing from Texas and man, they know how to write an album. I ordered their new album "The Trials of Van Occupanther" off the net a fortnight ago and have been listening to it non-stop since it arrived last week. It's an album that is just so ENJOYABLE, and in all situations.

VERY Neil Young sounding, but where Neil has made has trademark on loose imperfections, Midlake often sound like a marching band dropping whizz, especially on their killer rock tracks like the wonderfully powerful "Young Bride".

"Roscoe", the records opening song, was the four and half a minutes that basically made me fall for this band. In contention for song of the year, it is a sprawling, catchy rock tune driven by a raw guitar riff and a beautiful, melodic chorus. It probably IS song of the year so far. Word.

Anyway, these guys will probably show up on Pitchfork's radar and might cop a 1/4 page article in one of Rolling Stone's "trying to be cool" issues, but I highly doubt anything MASSIVE will eventuate. Which is a shame, because this honestly is a band that has all the goods to reach Shins-level of cult-dom and go far, far beyond.

I'm trying to track down their earlier record.

I'd go to the trouble of uploading stuff but I highly doubt anyone would care that much, except maybe Freak (who should care, because you'd dig it). If you're mildly keen, check out http://www.myspace.com/midlake and listen to "Roscoe". If you like what you hear, let me know and I throw a few yousendit's together.

Cheers.

Sounds like The Flaming Lips. A lot.

i'm loving their style so far.

They're from my Grandma's town! :surprised:

I LOVE THEM AUTOMATICALLY

I got as far as "VERY Neil Young sounding" in your description and stopped reading, clicked the link. Thy sound like a Neil Young and acoustic-Opeth mix. Very fresh...I'll keep listening.

THIS is why I like this forum ! I'm a little late on this but thanks for the discovery Reilly (yeah, 4 years later...) !

Midlake fans, just for your attention they play on the new album by ex-The Czars frontman John Grant (Queen of Denmark)
