Champions League final

Date: Wednesday, 23 May

Kick-off: 1945 BST

Venue: Olympic Stadium, Athens

Referee: To be announced

Liverpool winger Bolo Zenden is facing a race against time to be fit for the Champions League final after picking up an ankle injury in training this week.

The Dutch midfielder injured his ankle in training and could be forced to miss the Athens final against AC Milan.

"He's been treated by the doctor and the good news is the swelling is not that bad," said manager Rafael Benitez.

Liverpool's first-choice keeper Jose Reina and back-up Jerzy Dudek have both been passed fit.

Reina injured a shoulder at Fulham and was left out of the final home league game against Charlton as a precaution.

But the Spaniard has trained normally all week in La Manga and is available - as has Dudek who has been suffering with a groin problem.

Benitez will make no decision on Zenden until further checks on the injury.

He added: "It will be difficult to say he will be fit for the final now, but I won't say 'no' yet.

"He is strong and determined and it may recover quickly. I still hope he will be OK.

"It will be a big disappointment for him and for us if it's not possible. Bolo can bring character, experience and tactical knowledge to the team.

"He is one of the good options for the left side, but now we must see how he recovers and decide what to do."

Liverpool go into the game definitely without injured duo Luis Garcia and Fabio Aurelio, while Benitez is also hopeful Mohamed Sissoko will be available.

Milan defender Paolo Maldini has been bothered by a knee injury, but is set to start his eighth European Cup final.

Milan coach ridicules Reds style

Ancelotti (left) was beaten by Benitez's side at the 2005 Champions League final

AC Milan Carlo Ancelotti has labelled Liverpool the least technically gifted of the three English sides to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Ancelotti has also accused the Reds of abandoning their English roots ahead of their Champions League final on 23 May.

"Technically, Liverpool are the worst team of the three English sides who reached the semi-finals," he said.

"But out of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, I'd have preferred United in the final."

He added: "You could see from the two legs of our semi-final with them that they play and let you play. I don't think it will be the same with Liverpool."

AC Milan were beaten by the Anfield side in the 2005 final in the competition after Liverpool came back from 3-0 down to draw level at 3-3 and then win on penalties.

Genarro Gattuso has already taunted the Reds by claiming they are not as good as Manchester United and Ancelotti has stoked the fires further with his latest comments.

He delivered a barb at counterpart Rafael Benitez and a policy he sees as decreasing the number of English players in the team.

"Milan are a strong Italian team. there is a strong Italian culture running through the team." said Ancelotti.

"Liverpool do not have the DNA of an English side. It is more of a Mediterranean team because of the coach."

Ancelotti says the true......Liverpool is less strong...technically than Man and Chelsea...but is harder to face cause mentally, and tactically they're more dangerous than other english teams...at least in champions league

"Milan are a strong Italian team. there is a strong Italian culture running through the team."

........just for gattuso and the defense....all the rest is kakà and seedorf

Don't forget the crowd - Milan fans could have travelled in a minibus two years ago

and Pirlo and Ambrosini and Inzaghi.. come on! Milan is not Inter!

*NOTE TO SELF* English football jokes are lost on Italians

The real joke is people thinking Liverpool have a chance of winning!

Milan's name is written on the cup, they weren't even meant to be in the competition at the start when they were banned because of the match fixing scandle. But they got reinstated and have made the final, it is clearly their year.

And only because they gave the appeal judges quite a bit of money they were allowed back into it :laugh3:

Once a match fixer, always a match fixer.

Pirlo is not the player who impressed the past year

Inzaghi is 75 years old:D and is not good as before

Ambrosini.....this one is still good...

You're right...Milan is the more italian of the biggests team....but i CAN'T STAND THEM:P:P

RIGHT....on the 1st point

So you did give the judges lots of money to reverse their decision???

That's worst than giving agents Bungs

So you did give the judges lots of money to reverse their decision???

That's worst than giving agents Bungs

after the magistrates investigations, the football association decided to change JUST the first grade judges.....that's why, on the second one, we had these sentences:less penalization for all (for juve too), and for milan the chance to go to the preliminary round of the champions league...that's the story.Anyway...Milan started to play well by the quarterfinals and deserved , for what they've showed, to reach the final....
